  1. Update? How did you get on at the new dojo?
  2. We a bit luckier here being an island nation at the end of the world, eliminated here if we keep the borders closed. Back to the dojo on Wednesday!!!!!
  3. I have seen a guy go from Shodan back to white belt.........Never seen anyone just "morph" across at all.
  4. I'll be sure to add a pic here for your keen eye Bob, it's probably 4-6 mths out as I have to stay focused on shodan grading at this time.
  5. I've found a bit on youtube, looks like I'll have to find a spoke shave and it will pretty much be done by hand, not lathe. I'm going to try and use some medium density wood that can take the knocks without bruising too easily, but doesn't weigh too much, not interested in the toothpick style for doing the dance moves et al. music etc , it will be for kata and sparring.
  6. Rank is rank, up or down, if you train in a system that uses rank to address, then rank it is, irrespective of who is taking the class. Now, in what order is the "greet" done, if a senior is in the class and not taking it!
  7. Very true Bob, I have found in all settings, don't make something up , it will come back to haunt you, respect is very hard to regain once there is mistrust. "I don't know, but I'll find out", and then come back to the students with an answer shows them that you care enough about them to find out!
  8. Gidday Gary, Welcome to KF!
  9. OK, so I enjoy working with wood, I have some Japanese maple drying ATM which I will convert into Nunchuka sometime, but I am interested in making my own bo, are there any guidelines for dimensions etc? How much taper, diameter, length etc?
  10. Must be getting close to season 3, sounds like it's all ready to release, they just holding off until they can do all the promotional tour stuff. My 14 yr old daughter can't wait! Me neither TBH, I have become a Johnny fan and Daniel has become a bit of a tosser to me............
  11. Mehh, it was pretty average IMHO. They picked the right time to finish up the franchise. Although I have managed to get my hands on The Kung Fu master, Huo Yuang Jia a recent release, NOT to be confused with "Fearless" (Another great movie). No english subs tho, so I'm holding off watching it until I find some subs to download.
  12. I train Sanchin, our version comes from Mas Oyama, not sure where he took it from, Tensho also, I enjoy them both, Sanchin for me is a very intense kata, and I take it quite slowly, slower than most others in our dojo. Tensho, I enjoy as it is more flowing .
  13. Above my paygrade mate, I would say that to be legitimate it is in your own heart and mind, just ask yourself what your motivation is to start a new style.
  14. The best 2 are 1 and 2, they go downhill a bit from there. The different wushu styles showcased in Ip Man 2 was interesting to see. I like a good storyline as well as action and there are some real gems that have come out of China. Apart from Hero (My all time number 1), here are some other good ones, 14 Blades, Fearless, Reign of Assassins (With Michelle Yao as Drizzle, so named as that is the sound that her opponents blood makes by the time she has finished with them). The flying swords of dragon gate. Basically, if you enjoyed "Crouching tiger, hidden dragon" then likely you will enjoy these also. I've got a huge list, if you like the style and don't mind subtitles, I'll add more titles later.
  15. Found Ninja assassin on Netflix a few nights ago, still don't know how I managed to watch the whole thing! Shogun assassin was pretty good a few weeks ago and some crazy Japanese movie with more swords and gore than I have seen in a long time. "Blade of the immortal" wasn't as cheezy as the name suggests....
  16. OK , I'll have a go. A Pinan, Yon. A mokuso, hmmmmm, I'll take 3, Geki sai dai, Saiha and probably my all time number one, Sanchin! Not a fancy looking kata, no geri for example, but Sanchin for me is some special, intensity plus! It truely does encompass the mind body and techniques!
  17. This is a pretty good insight into the preparation required. There is a timed round per fighter, but if they are successfully swept then they are out. This one seems more brutal than the Spanish one... Shihan Judd Reid, a well known Aussie karateka.
  18. Training at home, via facebook messenger group. There are 3 of us preparing for shodan grading so we are keeping up the training, Honbu has done a bunch of on-demand classes for the various grades that our dojo may access and use. Training at home only, with cardio (running, walking and cycling permitted on the streets, keeping ourselves in a 2m "bubble" at all times.
  19. Just found this interesting video on a subject that I find very interesting..
  20. Anyone seen it yet? Verdict?
  21. 1. Pretty obvious, pass my shodan grading...... 2. Try and get some bucket list stuff done after June.
  22. 1. Managing OK so far and a surgery to fix one problem coming up in a few weeks. 2. Happy to say that I am feeling a LOT happier about things right now, Shodan grading coming up in June and so far my body has handled the extra training OK. So pretty happy about 2019 from a karate perspective.
  23. Welcome Kevin. Stay warm up there!!
  24. Thinking of you Bob, get that appointment asap and cross every bridge as you come to them, step by step.............
  25. Congratulations team!!! Great efforts!!
