Debrief: (ADN News) Father subdues home invader
Groinstrike replied to JusticeZero's topic in General Chat
This is where i believe visualization training is very important. Sitting alone in your dark house/apartment, try to get the hair to stand up on the back of your neck, try to get your heart pounding. Think of a scenerio where you may have to deploy deadly force. Visualize your actions to smallest detail. This may help you cope if the worst case scenerio should happen, and help you cope should you be victorious. -

Yeah, tough situation you got there. I suggest trying to act weird/crazy enough to scare the kid off(like stroking a gun and mumbling alot). Or just come right out and say that he is not welcome, i understand that this may upset Stepdaughters and wives, but their safety is more important than their anger level.

11/28 Self-defense/Awareness scenerios with a novice student, thought it would be necessary considering he is in high school and for some reason 20 year old in our area are getting into fights with 15 year olds!!!!! Boxing-Im concentrating on more of a Kempo style ala Tallgeese. -
Enjoyed the first 3/4 of this episode, last 10 minutes where insane. I had to tell the gf that there is no crying allowed in Zombie movies/tv shows. I guess that would make me more of a Shane guy, very emotional stuff.

Rank, Knowledge, and Experience!
Groinstrike replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Knowledge and Experience are untangable assets, Rank is just a man made system to measure things. As Forrest Morgan says "all systems are artificial" -
Mid-Season Finale Tonight!!!! Entitled "Pretty Much Dead Already" The direct tv infromation page reads "More secrets are revealed, Hershel refused to accept a new world view, Andrea steps out of her shell, every thing is food for something" Sound like they are going to step on the accelerater for the final episode for a few months. My guess is that this episode will end on some type of big cliffhanger. Any ideas on some possiblities from anyone out there????

Bujin Bugei Jutsu Yellow Belt Test
Groinstrike replied to MasterPain's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Also the fact that his test was about 4 times as long as the normal yellow belt test, we thought he deserved orange. Aside from the fact that i hate the sound of my own voice, thanks for posting this Bill. -

Kesting article
Groinstrike replied to tallgeese's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Awesome article, we have a high school kid that is testing for rank tomorrow who needs to read this. He is testing for Yellow and we are trying to make him as uncomfortable as possible to see how he responds. I know, we can be a little sadistic. On another note, 300 was a good movie, however it was ruined for me by watching the rifftrax guys(the guys from mst3k) rip it to shreds, very funny stuff. Here is a link to some of the funnier parts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V3gMtk8TeI Disclaimer: If you still want to enjoy the movie, do not view this link. -

street fights-tell your story
Groinstrike replied to judobrah's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Its really a shame that human beings are sometimes the way they are. It shows that a tapout shirt does not make you tough. People with a violent history that don't change their ways often end up in tragic circumstances. Martial arts should keep out of fights and aware of your surroundings. I can't help but be reminded of the death of Alex "f14" Gong, even with a much different set of circumstances. -
Overall i would say that "Secrets" was a better than average episode, it furthered the relationship between Maggie and Glenn, Introduced a major conflict between a Dale and Shane, and Rick is now aware of Lori's pregnancy and her encounters with Shane.

street fights-tell your story
Groinstrike replied to judobrah's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with tallgeese, the base of our tallgeese and myself's base art it a strictly combative art concerned only with effectiveness is fighting at all ranges. If you train a martial art for self defense, you can make it effective on the street. That being said streetfights can be the most undpredictable phenomena you can imagine, case in point, a person whom i was acquanted with, whom was an MMA "fighter" and was known to be a "tough guy" was involved in a street fight last night. It quickly changed from a street fight to a tragic event when the other person involved in the fight pulled a handgun and mortaly wounded him, this took place just last night. I will be using this incident as a lesson to our younger students that just because you think your a tough guy and can fight, you may even be a great fighter, but that all changes when on person decides that it won't be a fair fight. -
Stoked for tonights episode entitles "Secrets", curious to see where the series will go from here. Doubtful that they will stay at Herschels farm for much longer after Glenn discovered his disturbing secret.

I think you make a good point here. At some point, it needs to be addressed, and I think most people don't either assume others address it to themselves in some brief way, just by accepting their own mortality, or don't know how, or want, to address it in their classes. I think once an instructor starts talking about self-defense, he/she needs to discuss why we defend ourselves. Most likely, its because someone wants to hurt us, maybe bad enough to kill us. Then start the addressing from there. I've heard and seen written many times from Martial Artists the thoughts or ideas that they would kill if they had to. I think to myself, "Really?" I want to break that discussion down with them at times. Say to them, "Imagine yourself killing someone in self-defense. Don't just say it. See that scenario play out in you head. See yourself crushing someone's throat, and imagine the sound it makes. Grab some fruit and squish it with your two hands, and imagine that is your hand on someone's throat, because they were trying to kill you. Now flip it, and imagine those things happening to you. Because that is what a killer wants to do to you, either with his hands, or a weapon." Now at that point, we've got a much more interesting conversation going on. Maybe I got a bit off track there, but I think it meshes with the overall concept of the thread here. I think to maximize training effiency, we have to get to this point. Now, once you get to training, you don't want your students to "lose" in training. We have to have them keep fighting until the criteria of the scenario is met in which they "win," which would equate to "living." But that's another thread, I guess. Great Post Brian!!!!

Good Question, it is very important to condition ourselves to not get adrenaline drunk and choke our training partners unconsious. As our moms have told us "don't break your toys". In a combative situation however, we must use the force necessary to stop the assault, this may mean choking to unconsiousness or even death, or breaking a limb. Along the same lines i once heard a story of a martial artist who took a knife away from an assailant only to hand the knife right back because he had been conditioned to due so in training. We have a rule in our dojo, never hand the weapon back after a disarm, your partner must take it away from you. -
