Welcome to KF kenpolifter -
Well no kidding open hand strikes ARE effective. I am surprised no one has mentioned one of some of the basic techniques used in self defense which are open handed techniques such as the eye gouge with a spear finger thrust or an open hand strike to the throat or double open palm strike to both ears causing ear drum rupture. This is what it does http://www.earsurgery.org/tympan.html (not too pretty)..... Kinda like popping a plastic baggie. Causes immense pain, disorientation, and some blood may come out of his ears. The disorientation and pain gives you just enough time to run like hell! ... any question as to the effectiveness of an openhanded strike? Be on the receiving end!!!

Do multi-vitamins do a good job of supplementing the diet?
KickChick replied to BKJ1216's topic in Health and Fitness
Anyone that does not eat a balanced diet (and who does??) which includes at least 5 fruits and vegetables each day, whole grains, dairy, and meat, poultry or fish, may not be getting enough folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 (which can help lower homocysteine levels and reduce the risk of heart attack). Also if you are trying to lose weight and are on a low calorie diet you are most likely to be deficient in some vitamins and minerals. Bear in mind though that even if you take a multi, you still need to have a balanced, healthy diet. These pills are not magic bullets. Certain foods particularly fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provide fiber aswell as countless beneficial phytochemicals not found in any pill. The 13 true vitamins that you need to live healthy: A. C, D, E, and K, plus the B complex consisting of 8 vitamins (thiamin or B1, riboflavin or B2, niacin or B3. folic acid, pantothenic acid, biotin, B6, and B12). These come from foods (and pills), and vitamins D and K are also manufactured in the body. -
I was going to post that same one and also this one.... http://www.blackbeltshop.com/tournaments.htm ... and as yellowsnow suggested, ask your instructor/dojo owner. They are usually put on a mailing list for such events (whether they want to be or not).

Our school and the ITU organization requires gold stripes on our black belt to designate dan ranks.... and its a good thing because we are a "Black Belt " school.... which basically means a good number of our black belt students have remained to continue their training .... hence we have a separate black belt (advanced) classes with a large number of bb's in attendance. And the "good thing" is the instructor would know how to split this class up on forms night. Also we line up at the beginning of class according to rank ... with 15 or more black belts it would be rather confusing!! So my black belt is embroidered with two gold horizontal stripes on the left and my name in Korean letters (Hangul) on the right. I have heard of black belts having "tips" which I am not familiar with and maybe someone can shed light on these.

Any of you injured because of practising martial arts?
KickChick replied to Rhuarc's topic in Health and Fitness
Hi Rhuarc .... Stop by Introductions and tell us more about yourself (besides your injuries!) I understand you're from Singapore. I am very familiar with the ITF TKD there but not with WTF (sorry) Please tell us more! I also answered your WTF forms question in the Korean Arts Forum. Looking forward to your posting there also. Many more injury reports here: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1510 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1273 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=488 -

TKD: The Practitioner's Club
KickChick replied to Maestro's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
*KickChick enters and bows to her fellow TKDOists*...she breathes a sigh of relief as she commends Maestro on his subject matter I don't want to bore all of you with the details of my training and my love for the martial art I practice (my web page is back online ). I, like the Maestro, study and practice a very traditional style of Tae Kwon Do much in the same manner as he describes. I have spent the duration of my membership here trying to educate those who have no clue as to all the styles that are contained within TKD ... TKD has suffered the fate of "modernization" ... is it sport, is it art? In all honestly I am tired & frustrated (but that is another story!! ) This is indeed a breath of fresh air.. and Maestro I thank you! -
Thank you so much Sai. I believe I have answered many many posts regarding this subject. It is a favorite of both young & old martial artists.... getting and retaining flexibility via stretching for splits or kick height. Sai I hope you don't mind me including these links as well because they contain some more useful info on the goal of stretching.... I like the "visual" better. Although I do have the book The Complete Tae Kwon Do Hyung by Hee Il. Cho ... which is even better and helpful, I would prefer the "visual" flow of seeing the forms performed.... hearing the breathing, the tempo & snap of each movement--- something you are not obviously going to get from a written page. Agree?
