If the finger is properly protected, you can continue to train. "Buddy taping," or taping an injured finger to the healthy one next to it. Obly if the fracture is in the second or third finger bone, you will need to splint the finger for four to six weeks to allow the fracture to heal. When you "jam" a finger, it usually becomes very swollen. One of the joints holding the finger bone may not be totally dislocated, but the bone may have snapped out of joint and then snapped back in. This injures the cartilage on the end of the bone, and around the joint, and stretches the ligaments that hold the joint together. Although swollen and very painful, the finger may appear normal on an x-ray. A jammed finger heals very slowly. The finger should be immobilized for 7 to 10 days and then buddy-taped to the finger next to it. As with any other jammed joint your finger will not return to full function. A jammed finger will always be larger than it was or larger than the joint on the opposite hand. You will lose some degree of flexibility in the finger, but not enough to cause any great difficulty in dexterity. I don't know what is worse really a jammed or a broken finger!!! ..... but many finger fractures are not serious, particularly those in the tip of the finger.

It stands for "World Taekwondo Federation" ... The WTF was recognized by the IOC- International Olympic Committee, making its first Olympic debut in the year 2000 ...because the WTF puts so much emphasis on sparring, many people consider WTF as being more of a sport than an a traditional TKD such as ITF

I would like to know in which club you all here practise
KickChick replied to mArTiAl_GiRl's topic in Karate
So thats the new school Laurie? I forwarded the info re: camps and other programs they offer to our Master Inst. He smentioned to me that he may be interested in doing the same at our school over summer possibly.... so maybe he can get some ideas from your school. I have been training at the same school now for 11 years http://www.aitkd.com -
Got a qeustion for all you instructors.
KickChick replied to BKJ1216's topic in Instructors and School Owners
No, I think that maybe you should go in person as the previous posters suggested. Calling first to see if you can go for a trial class and then to discuss tuition fees is one thing. To discuss actual costs and contracts before even trying a class and knowing first hand the quality based on cost of instruction ....is another. Is May 12th coming anytime soon??? -

Uniting against "evil" is what the UN is about. With the U.S as a "loose cannon" who gets to decide who is evil and who's not? PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR WORDS IN MY MOUTH! I did not post THAT!!! Edit** Very sneaky superleeds..... if you are going to quote, use the poster's direct quote! Don't modify it to suit your opinion!! Who decides??? The U.N. ..... France, Germany, China and Russia opposed removing Saddam Hussein by force because all of those countries are doing profitable business with Saddam and all of them would like to see US power diminished.

Let me just sneak in here with my 2 cents.... Toning is simply the simultaneous decrease of fat and restoring of muscle. The combination of weight training, aerobic exercise and good eating habits have shown to be the most effective for fat loss and toning. Remember too that when beginning a weight program, muscle mass increases may in the beginning out pace fat loss, resulting in a very small temporary weight gain. Increase your exercise to offset. As far as those "love handles" Maestro.... they say it is recommended to perform high reps (20-30 or 20-50 reps) for abs and oblique training. With fat around the waist, moderate repetitions with a greater resistance can increase muscle girth under the subcutaneous fat. If fat is not lost, more muscle can push out the fat resulting in a bulkier appearance. The ab muscles are fairly small muscles. Performing high reps with a lighter weight will not compromise metabolism or muscle increases as would performing high reps with light resistance on larger muscles.

Hey you're progressing along nicely! It does take "time" there is no immediate plan of action when it comes to flexibility... but it does require consistent stretching practices. (My side split is 100% .... I still have to work on my front split)
-
No not necessarily BKJ .... There is alot of "free" mpegs available on the internet on many, many different katas/forms and techniques .... they are there if you know how to look for them! However, I was unable to track a site down for you spcifically for this kata I also performed a search on some P2P's which turned out zero... sorry. Maybe someone else can have better luck??

Seems America and our loyal allies are the only ones with the balls to do let democracy win. The war could have bee thwarted if Saddam had agreed to comply first with unveilling the truth whether or not he had weapons of mass detruction ... to account for his (Saddam's) unaccounted 8,500 liters of anthrax. If used against people, a worldwide catastrophe would ensue not only for America! It's one thing for countries to condemn Saddam's gassing of the Kurds, mass murder and rape in Kuwait, and funding of suicide bombing expeditions, it is quite another to prevent those things.... and that is what we are doing. If the nations of the world would unite against evil ... like Saddam, and the insanity of countries like North Korea, deadly situations would be solved and the world would be a better, safer place. Every effort was made by by legal and political means.... however, as we have all seen, Osama Bin Laden, Adolph Hitler and, now Saddam Hussein have not complied. So in order to prevent the mass death that took place in Europe and Asia 60 years ago, I support my President, America and our Allies in removing a dangerous killer from power.

What's your favorite Chinese take out dish ???
KickChick replied to Smith amp Wesson's topic in General Chat
My favorite Chinese take out is Kung Pao Chicken or General Tso's Chicken (They're not as healthy because of being deep fried but .... ...and the standard Beef w/Broccoli ). When I need to "be good" I try and order Cantonese which is lighter.... and I love Szechuan!!! I also order lots of steamed rice cause I tend to overeat when we have Chinese so I fill up on the rice so I eat less of the other dishes. Another reason to eat rice is that it is a complex carbohydrate. Besides being low in calories... complex carbohydrates boost the metabolism. as far as Japanese.... I love the hibachi-type restaurants .... and SUSHI!! like tekka machi and nigiri zushi -

How often should you attend practice
KickChick replied to craknek's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree with Ken.... I train 2-3 nights and teach 1-2 nights but I try to be at school for only 3 days a week ... (which is approx. 1 hour a night) otherwise I would burn out and find myself in divorce court! (just kidding!) It does get all consuming at times... and I fortunately have a husband and children whose own needs I place before my own. Realistically, 2-3 nights is the norm for a "family" person with a full time job. Weekends can be devoted to morning conditioning and practice and every morning do some jumping jacks, push ups, crunches and static stretching for 15-20. -
Include some isometric stretching into your routine. The primary function of isometrics is to develop strength. In martial arts we require a different "type" of strength than say, a weight lifter requires. We need to develop the type of strength that helps us to generate alot of power with minimal movement while still maintaining our flexibility.... this is called "tendon strength" and you'll get this with isometrics. The tendons are the fibers that attach the muscles to the bones. So when you increase their stregth you develop more power in your technique.... like your kick that you said lacks "power". Weight training will also help to increase tendon strength but you'll get the same results in a shorter period of time by doing isometrics..

Oh no ... that is quite alright really. (I like "plugging" the ITU whenever I can).... But as I understand your concerns.... can you answer the ??? for me above still??? Thanks for putting yourself in the line of fire!!

Well, actually not an agent (but I work in an agency). And yes I travel ALOT!! I answered you (elsewhere) but I will post for the benefit of members here..... ... there are several fare wars going on now with many carriers. United Airlines, who is in bankruptcy, is offering some very good deals. They've not only announced deals on coach fares, but also on business-class fares.... so is American Airlines. When you're pricing your trip using whatever source you want (travel agent or internet), keep in mind that the old rules are changing. Old Rule: You have to stay over a Saturday night to get the best airfare. New Rule: Not necessarily. The smaller carriers (Frontier, Spirit, etc.) have ignored this rule for awhile. In the last several weeks, the larger carriers are slowly but surely dropping this requirement. Old Rule: You had to stay at least two nights to get a decent fare. New Rule: Again, not necessarily. The smaller carriers (again) started letting you fly into your destination on Monday and leave on Tuesday. The big carriers are just now starting to realize the potential and are following suit. In 3 weeks (as long as the ports stay open) ... still unsure of whether trip is a go now with war on the horizon. I will be cruising with my family and friends (group of 30 or so) to Belize & Western Carib. The group is TKD instructors, students & parents .... "Kickin' in the Caribbean" is what we are calling it!

Seems to me that you would have developed some level of flexibility by now (how long have you been taking karate?? You need to stretch in and out of class ..... working on stretching everday in the beginning of your training. Slowly and gradually avoiding "pain" ... discomfort is unavoidable but pain should be avoided. You should have been working at furthering your stretching flexibility on a consistent basis. Take a look at the thread at the beginning of this forum http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6186 Unfortunately this is a "test" that you cannot cram for!! Do what you can for now.
