  1. As far as diagrams go and step-by-step description of movements....that site is good .... IMO this one is better http://www.karate-kids.com/lesson3.htm Each form is hyperlinked to a page whereby you can print out and have at your disposal in which to practice, practice, practice........
  2. Thanks tkdlegend for trying to offer some assistance with that link however those are not the Chang Hon forms (ITF not KTA) Our school is now a member of the ITU http://www.taekwondo.to/ and uses all 25 forms of the ITF .... and forms are included on their site also. It's just that I though this video (Black Belt series) would be easier for me to view and better quality. John... I see the price of the colored belt series and though as I only really need Kwang Gae to Moon Moo I would look into the BB Series.... (which is only available in video. Thank you John for the kind words,, its members like you that keep me coming back! ....as long as I am able to
  3. How soon they forget .. I was a Sensei for a year! ... and thank you to all who offered congrats.... Now.... let's hope for the best Seoul Survivors!!! I will be handing in my answers later on in the day!
  4. Hey this is my 3,000th post guys!! So I thought I would say to the opposing team.... "you're going down big time!!!"...... DONE ALSO!! I have many of these in my DVD library .... I promise I won't look
  5. thank you .... I do believe the link provided all the necessary info though
  6. I see this was finally moved... boy was that confusing or what??) so OK.... so let me just say (with regards to TKD) there is no way in hell you can abandon high kicks for the mere fact (as Laurie posted) that they are necessary for forms (many of our TKD forms incude high kicks) and to score Mucho points for competition. And as Ken put it (rather nicely) .... let's not beat the poor dead horse. We know when to appropriately use the high kick (time & place blahblahblah...)... well, just us black belts that is! (just kidding!!!!)
  7. True .... could do that I suppose. Would be nice to have the whole series of bb forms in my possession though. Not even our 4th dan knows all of them (we have changed our dan requirements because of affiliation with a new TKD org. so no. of forms for each dan level has increased)..... He is even trying to catch up!
  8. Hey I thought you do all that in martial arts class Ashura. You need to do your stretching everyday at home... even before class. You can get to a point in your flexibility training (as I have) where you can just assume the position (v-stretch/toes pointed upward) while watching TV or elbows down in front reading a book ... just don't try it while driving
  9. .... click the link in my last post, find Kurz' book on our list and you'll be directed to Amazon
  10. So you are referring to TKD.... am I the only one who is lost here???
  11. I would recommend you have it checked and x-rayed... ankle injuries are tricky -- what looks like a sprain may possible be a fracture. In the meantime.... As Zero posted, ice your ankle until the swelling disappears. The ice limits the bleeding by narrowing blood vessels and helps reduce swelling. Fill a plastic bag with crushed ice and strap it onto the ankle with a towel or elastic bandage. Or you can use a bag of frozen peas or a cooler ice pack. Doctors usually recommend icing the ankle for 24 hours and then using heat and then there are others that prefer ice therapy only. Continue icing your ankle for 20 minutes or until it starts to feel numb, and then take off the ice pack and give the ankle enough time to regain some warmth, usually about 20 minutes. Keep icing for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for 48 hours or until the ankle returns to normal size. By "compressing" the ankle ... means to wrap it with an elastic bandage, which limits the swelling and bruising. You can do this in between icings and at night when you sleep. Also it is important to elevate the ankle so that it rests above your hips and above your heart. When you sleep try and keep it on pillows or raise the foot of your bed.
  12. This was not originally on the Korean Arts forum. I did indeed abandon TKD entirely for another art. It looks nothing like Karate. ok then that explains it. I (as probably everyone else here) thought you were referring to TKD. Maybe a moderator moved this thread to the wrong forum ...
  13. Unfortunately most martial art instructors are not properly trained in the proper ways of stretching. Take for example, a classic martial art stretch, (a form of ballistic stretching) partners execute bouncing shoves to shoulders as you stretch forward. Today most people know that this particular type of stretching is counter productive - it triggers the stretch reflex which then actually causes the muscle to tighten. On a serious note this stretching procedure can rupture discs in the lumbar area of your back while engaging in this practice of pushing someone into a stretch on their shoulders. Kurz's book does in fact challenge some of the prevailing ma notions on stretching and basically just offers tips on how to evaluate one's stretching potential and how to maximize it. Nothing wrong in needing that!
  14. I've got a great comeback for that one.... too bad you couldn't read my mind!!!!
  15. Kurz's stretching routine is basically to perform a brief 2-3 minute warmup, followed by several sets of dynamic leg raises (front, side and rear), isometric splits, then a cool down. And each morning and evening Kurz suggests you do additional sets of dynamic leg raises to "regulate the nervous tension of the muscles". The essence of his workout, and getting results, he claims are in doing the exercises reasonably, using the correct order, and frequency. Remember it can take up to 3-6 months for you to see any results … if any (although he does offer a refund only from his video if you don’t see a measurable difference in your flexibility.). The book at times is confusing and rather "scientifically technical" as is Pavel Tsatsouline book “Beyond Stretching” which I would also recommend. It really IMO deserves a place on your book shelf if you have a desire to achieve your maximum flexibility potential. How's that for a review?? http://www.karateforums.com/books.php
  16. If you abandon high kicks from TKD then you might not do any jump spin kicks as well ... I mean where do you stop until it looks like karate?? I equate high kicks as the icing on the cake!!
  17. ... are you referring to a free standing bag such as a "wavemaster" or hanging bag?? You can fill the wavemaster with water ... but mine is filled with sand ... You can spend about $100 (NEW) on one ... or go to Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2712974109&category=30101
  18. oooh.... ahhhh You must have read my mind!
  19. Expand your martial arts knowledge young man .... "Shotokan" may be the center of your universe but other styles do revolve around it (believe it or not).... Get a book and read ..... or research on the internet http://www.shaolin.com.au/animal.html ( site)
  20. That's a good question.... Does anyone know?? Here is the WTF website http://www.wtf.org/main.htm
  21. Well that happens to work best for you but you cannot possibly say that weightlifting has no benefits whatsoever because in effest calisthenics is a form of weight lifting (bodyweight) ..... And let me just tell you that we all all aware of Mr Furey and his combat conditioning exercises.. (do a search for topics)... I myself "change up" my weightlifting routine and "mix" a little of both to obtain the optimal in results! I lift primarily to burn fat and increase metabolism and it relaxes me (really!) You'll find more threads on pros and cons of weigtlifting and bodyweight exercise/calisthenics here in the Health & Fitness forum. But glad you love the results that you achieved!
  22. Welcome... lots of us here ... but always room for more!
  23. How many of you socialize with those in your dojo outside of class? Anyone have a real good buddy (s), .... or do you all just go train and have a separate group of friends outside from your fellow martial art students. Reason I ask is over the years (and it's been almost 12) at my school I have met some people that have become very good friends. Besides one of my very best friends being te owner instructor's wife, and fellow student & teacher, she is also my boss where I work. My children are friends with their children...and my children have met friends through the school. I have seen small young students grow to become young adults and well-trained black belts. I have also seen fellow students get married, have children and have even gone to funerals for two students of the school. Because or school is family-owned... that sense of closeness unites us all in a way and having a fellow martial artist as a close friend is kind of special . Do you?
  24. Ramy, you know it girlfriend ... that is particularly one of my pet "peeves" . Sorry I couldn't include more (some of these are really very good) ... but I do like the direction this thread is going. Maybe some of us will see the error in our ways and some of us ... well,
