  1. i think the interpretation of katas/hyungs/forms are an integral part of one's learning the the MAs. i think it truly helps black belts particularly what they're doing but more importantly, WHY they're doing. i also think that bunkai is not sent in stone and can be interpreted rather loosely. but overall bunkai is what ties the kata/hyung/form to the self defense portion of the art. it's good stuff, i like it alot.
  2. just simple leverage and strategy probably. once you maeuever the wrist/hand in a certain direction you lose a certain amount of strength. either that or he just pushed first and you lost leverage. i wouldnt be too concerned.

  4. i usually ask their name to personalize and make sure they know they are my student first, not my customer. i'd ask what they want out of it(if its a child ask the parent as well) and theres an application they have to fill out that deals with the medical questions i need to know.i talk about our school schedule in comparison to theirs to show my sincerity in trying to be able to help them balance their schedule. basic things like that pretty much make up the process.
  5. aside from the physical level of being a black belt(advanced techniques, more material to learn) i think the biggest part that changes or needs to change when becoming a black belt it mostly mental. this is evident, in taking a role of leadership, being able to teach, teach multiples, teach kids, teach adults, teach the mentally or physically disabled. being able to answer questions for people interested in joinging, running your own branch school. it's about learning to be humble, without getting stepped on. its about being tough but not being mean. its alot of these more mental things that you need to figure out as you go up the ranks of BB. theres a million mental questions you need to answer for yourself and i think thats a good chunk of truly being a black belt.

  8. so as a new favorite break, and simply because boards are ridiculously expensive im breaking 3 slabs of ice with a downward elbow on wednesday at a demo. hopefully the clean-up won't be too bad if i put towels underneath. i hope it looks as cool as i picture!
  9. No, its just whoever was in line first, so it initially starts at white belt. If you are striped for a requirement before someone else, you stand higher than them in line at that rank level. Unless you miss time and/or they advance past you, you are ahead of that person in line. He places obi on the students at testing from highest to lowest rank. ohh, that makes more sense.

  11. mine has to be, consistent effort. because if you always try, thats like 75percent of the battle. it's like grades in grade school...if a C is the best you can do, then a C is awesome, if a B is then a B is, if an A is then an A is. There not the same, but it its your best effort, that's it.
  12. Pretty basically...the feet are understandable, they will toughen up for sure. as for the knees if they bother you much longer, i might see a doc just to make sure you're not hurting yourself and that its just pain from being new and putting your body through new things. best of luck!
  13. the above plan seems good and all but its all up to how you feel when you do them. and as far as goals, obviously one is to become more fit, so break it down. Do you want to lose weight too? Do you want to gain muscles in certain areas that don't get worked out too much? Do you want to jump higher/run faster? Break it down into specifics and those can be your goals. starting slow is the best way to start because burn out will kill you. don't burn out in the first two weeks and you'll be able to keep a steady upward pace. congrats on starting martial arts, but what style though? because i couldnt help notice you referred to it as a sport...is it TKD? if so, if its shape you want...it's shape you'll be in! good luck.

  16. i dont have anything specific. but you can alter almost anything to go with the beat. find a good beat, and a good song and youre good to go. good luck!

  21. So most schools do them at one point or another, but what do you include in your demonstrations. Ours usually consist of breaking, fighting, skits, forms in shapes and different directions...etc. So what are yours all about?
  22. i agree and have done most of what you have said already. i definately agree on the enter page, although yours is nice, i hate them. we have enough room on the hosts server for all of our pictures and videos. i just need to get an idea for a template. i like yours. where did you get it from? and what program do you use?
