  1. this is a good one. so one week, i was talking about how i have never seemed to recieve and injury from martial arts, and i was explaining to a parent how avid i am in the martial arts, and no injuries have become of it. so the next week im doing and endurance drill(50 jump front kicks in 30 seconds) that i have done literally hundreds of times successfully before. on the FIRST jump front kick, i immediately notice i cannot get my footing under me and that somethings wrong, so i landed on the outside ankle of my left foot, and SNAP! there goes my entire ligament, gone. in little, tiny, completely unsavlagable pieces. so it's safe to say, im getting surgery in april. not fun.
  2. what i was told, and it makes good sense, is that the jump is symbolic of a flying side kick to an opponent who is a decent distance from you, but mid air you see the opponent is going to kick, and completley destroy you because of this flying side kick, so it gets switched to a long x block, in the cross stance. that is my understanding, and it makes sense in my two different forms pyung ahn oh dan and 5 pinan.
  3. i know that at one of my studio locations a heavy bag hangs from the rafters, and personally i hate it. because it makes a great deal of noise and makes all surrounding rooms shake after one slight hit. so regardless, i think a cornerman should be fine.
  4. what is a karate passport if you don't mind me asking?
  5. this kid didn't place it on the floor, he close to threw it. and if he didn't have to, he wouldnt have picked it up either, it was more like he was throwing it out than placing it away. especially for someone receiving black belt rank, i thought that he'd have more respect first of all, and second of all, it's a rule for it not to touch the floor, so to violate one right in the middle of your ceremony, doesn't exactly make you or us look great.
  6. haha, good stuff, i think i've heard that before too, hasn't gotten old though
  7. i completely agree, i'd like to share this story... at our dan ceremonies, you come to the front, greet the chief master who gives you your certificate and then the following masters an instructors and usually down the line your instructor wherever he/she is gives you your belt. after you recieve it you are suppose to line up with the black belts, take your red belt off, and put your black one on. so keeping this in mind, one kid comes forward, recieves his certificate, rank, goes down the line, joins the line takes his red belt off, lets it fall to the floor in a heap, and puts is new black belt on. i was furious, absolutely furious, and told the kid that you don't take a belt that has been around your waist for a year and a half of your life and then just throw it on the floor once you get a new-er prettier colored belt. oh God, i let this kid have it. but anyways, i look back on it now and laugh, so i thought i'd share.
  8. none that come to mind, but i'd google something like 'custom made weapons' or something like that
  9. I'd say inform him politely of the situation and leave it in his hands, not asking or requesting anything in particular be done, because that's when people of authority usually get offended and feel like you're 'doing your job for him'. so this way if you inform him of the problem, and after time it still occurs you can bring it up again, and maybe suggest splitting them. just my two cents, but i'd definately let him know what's going down. good luck to you and your son.
  10. there is a way to teach and fight without pummeling a child. i agree with PitbullJudoka on this one, and say fight them, but make it fair, make it a learning experience, not a disappointing one.
  11. well congratulations, im sure you will do well, it seems like you train very hard, good luck!
  12. im going to answer your question with another question... so what's it going to take to get the answer???
  13. usually when this happens, we know that we aren't really going to be getting anything competitive wise out of the match some of us opt to fight on our knees.
  14. uhh, thats sounds like it hurts, so how does conditioning work? by killing the nerves? making the bone more dense? it doesnt really hurt...as long as you break it, you miss or it doesn't go through, it kills like heck. and yes it kills nerves and makes the bones re-calcify and what not and makes them harder. for the most part, it hardens everything the more you condition it, it's definately not too hard if you put your mind to it. the only thing is...baseball bats get expensive after a while!
  15. yes i would definately reconsider where you are training, as Bushido said. if anything, she should do pushups for being a poor black belt and instructor. things happen in karate, and if you are not willing to deal with that, go cheerlead. i think you were more than respectful, and that it truly was an accident, and i think it is very disrespectful and against some of the philosophies of MAs for the black belt for not apologizing or even recongnizing yours. i do not blame you for not going back, and would consider another school, or deal with the embarassment if it's worth it i suppose, or just skip the sparring class and go to the others. hope this helps, good luck, that's a tough spot to be in.
  16. yes you can pad your shins, stop doing low kicks all together, or just fake the kick and use the utmost control coming within about an inch from there leg and that way, if they bite then that might even set you up for a nice follow up. good luck
  17. It is very cool and is it quite a lot of mind over matter, as many breaks are. I do the baseball bat, well use to, i probably haven't done it for about a year. but you just make sure you have two preferably large, reliable holders, you have em hold it for their lives and have a whack at it, with your shins hopefully. i haven't seen it done any other way, so that's the way i do it. i conditioned my shins by always keeping a staff in my hand while i taught my classes and as i taught i'd whack my shins with the staff, and i'd also kick door frames. i have found door frames to be very helpful with MAs conditioning, i use it for my ridge hand as well.
  18. wow thoes are very cool. please do post more, i might try some of those. but i've done the ridge hand for many years and like it very much...females unite!
  19. i agree, if you can't find anything local, i'd send it to eosin panther, they do very high quality work. but first try to find a local stitching or screen printing place, they should be able to do it with no problem. good luck though.
  20. hahahha, that's what i thought, but i didnt seem to think it was as fun as it apparently is.
