best of luck to you both. maybe you'll end up as joint owners of your own family ma's school one day! .......no Mrs. Nightowl as of now though. -
and what color gi are you looking for, im assuming something white or black with no trim since you used the term 'gi'.

It is not expensive but i recommend anything from karatedepot.com, my black belt is from there, i've had it for years and its been great, and one of my uniforms is from there as well, and thats been great for about a year as well. but besides that proforce is a good brand, but if your looking for something thick, with some real nice stitching i'd give shureido, kwon, tokaido, kamikaze, and ronin. here is a link to a few good reviews on most of these brands: http://www.discountmas.com/reofhiqukaun.html good luck and let me know what you think!

yes, i have heard the 'myth' cries. and i have also read that article, but unless i have substantial evidence, i will follow the tradition i have learned and maintain set in my ways. whether its true or not, i believe it has some good points and is good to follow. but nonetheless, until i find a reason to wash my belt, i'll continue to keep it the way it is, and with the new fad of washing the belt to make it look more worn, it gives me all the more reason to not wash it. whatever others do is fine, wash or don't wash, but i've had my bb for a long time, and trained very hard with it and just so everyone knows, it smells fine.

when not to yell "kiah!"
NewEnglands_KyoSa replied to masterintraining's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
in your sleep(had to say that one because apparently i've done it ) at a board meeting mid conversation with a new student's parents instead of Amen at church that's all i got, i'll add more later.... -
well i do not wash mine due to two things. one is tradition and the other is that there's a new fad out there that if you wash your black belt it will fade and fray faster, which apparently is the new 'look' for martial artists. people opinions on not washing them due to tradition is different and that's all well and good, not washing it is just the way i do it. i work very hard during classes and have had my black belt for many years and have not had a problem with smell that some people talk about, so if you dont have to then i wouldnt risk it. yes, it will shrink slightly but hardly much at all prob like a quarter inch, if that. and yes, the color will start to fade, referring back to that whole 'fad' thing. you can absolutely wash a cotton belt, but satin, i wouldnt, i'd hand wash that and hang dry at the most. but good luck with whatever you chose to do.

well, i'll try to search for you, but first congratulations and second, are you dead set on the century iron man, because there's many other fantastic gis that im sure many of us could recommend for you.
-
you know, i've always hated gis that dont fit. it's always been a pet peeve of mine, im particularly OCD so it bothers me greatly...off topic but just curious anyone ever hear of custom gis...i might consider one

Thanks White Owl! my coach was a brilliant man. that quote has always stuck with me.

thats very interesting. we dont have 'junior' ranks, but i've seen it done many ways at many other schools. how does that go at your school? are their testing requirements different? how do you finally test out of being a junior? do they have different belts/uniforms/patches than you do? what ages are considered 'junior'? do you have junior bb ranks?

NewEnglands_KyoSa replied to NewEnglands_KyoSa's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i see alot of parents who join after their children. i think its great that families take ma's together. its corny as heck but they say the family that kicks together, sticks together. and so far i've seen that to be true. -
my time usually comes and goes seasonally and often weekly. on a good week, i'll go m-f for atleast two hours at a whack, maybe three, maybe four. but on a bad week, i'll go anywhere from two-three days.

its like one of my basketball coaches once said "do what you can do, but that's it. don't try to be someone you're not, because that's where you'll screw up, or get hurt, or hurt others. play within yourself, and within your abilities."

Advice - How to answer the phone
NewEnglands_KyoSa replied to Dannyl_K's topic in Instructors and School Owners
it sounds a lot better. just remember, let the conversation flow, as long as you pick up the phone and let them know what they've called and answered their questions, you've done your job. -
Advice - How to answer the phone
NewEnglands_KyoSa replied to Dannyl_K's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I agree with Patrick here. No matter whether you tell them or not, they're going to find out what the price is and when they do, whether its on the phone or at your school, if its not what fits they're budget they're still not going to do it. so give them a general price and maybe elaborate alitte on your other options, it may spark the conversation and make it less awkward. at one of my school's, the owner has all dojo calls transfered to his cell phone(no idea how he does it though) but he answers and and just say "bridgewater martial arts". and usually the person on the other end will start asking the appropiate questions themselves(i.e. who am i speaking with, what they're calling for...etc). try not too sound too much like a business, the less excessive unecessary talking you do, the less sketchy you sound. just think about your approach, if you could compare it to that of a grocery store, than you may want to take a less 'scripted' approach. good luck. -
Welcome! i take chinese kempo, and i absolutely love it, hope you find great love in that art as well.
