Japanese/Okinawan Stylist do you break at your school?
LeaF replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Karate
We also don't break, but at tournaments or demos you will see people from the dojo doing breaks, but it holds no significance during gradings or our training. -
Top 10 Martial Arts styles on the learning channel
LeaF replied to Big Game's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I saw it when it first aired aswell, with the ranking aside I really enjoyed watching it for the images and brief outlines of all the arts. Did anyone notice all the people reperesenting the karate styles were from goju . It was cool because I could see simularities between the katas they were doing and the variation I pratice, the footage was all from okinawa. -
During classes, rather intense or not, my hands and feet always turn a bright red. I assume this is the blood being pushed to my expremeties. Any suggestions upon why this might be occuring, poor circulation, good circulation, weak heart? Any suggestions to satisfy my curousity would be greatly appreicated. By the way, I am the only one in my class that this happnes too. LeaF

is teaching your self martial arts imposible?
LeaF replied to fraden2's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think it is possible to teach yourself a MA altough I would not addvise it.... Firstly you may be able to learn techniques from a book, but without someone to correct and scrutinize those techniques, you cannot be assured you are doing them entirely correct. Furthermore "most" (and I say most because there are always those select few who this does not apply to) people have a very difficult time encouraging and commiting thereselves to a training scheldule if there is not someone there to push them to their limit. Allow me to elaborate as my point may have been lost. You want to do some push ups to work on your arms. So you get in position and start doing push ups. After a couple minutes you get tired and stop. Now if you had a trainer to teacher by you, you would keep going until they finished counting( or you collapse ), hence pushing yourself to your limit. The same thing can be assoicated with kata pratice or sparing. It takes a very special person to maintain diligent training without the encouragment of an intstructer. So even if you learn the kata if there is noone there to tell you to pratice it, why wouldn't you not just start the next? Thanks, LeaF -

Well I will try to answer this question as best I can. Firstly I am not very familar with the animal styles of China, so I cannot comment on the presence in great detail. I'll begin with what I do know. Goju ryu karate-do is a combination of Chinese Kempo and Okinawan Te. Chojun Miyagi is the founder of goju. His teacher, Kanryo Higashionna, studdied in China for about 22 years, where he learned Shorinji Kenpo under Ryu Ryo Ko and his assistant Wan Shin Zan prior to this he studied with Seisho Arakaki, who had studied the F.ukien style of chinese kempo. Now Miyagi also had a close friend by the name of Gogenki, who he traveled to china with and this friend was a teacher of Chinese White Crane Kenpo. This must have also influenced the development of Goju. This is all that can be sure of, although I am certain that you will see many different animal styles present since this is such a balenced art

I am.... http://quiz.ravenblack.net/videogame/11.png I am Mr Do. I am sedentary by nature, enjoying passive entertainment, eating when the mood takes me, and playing with my food. I try to avoid conflict, but when I'm angered, I can be a devil - if you force me to fight, I will crush you. With apples. He he he this actually sums me up pretty well
