Forms/Kata/Poomse/Sets...How much is too much?
LeaF replied to Stold's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Through my expirence, it is best not to devote any classes fully to one thing. I prefer to spend the classes doing a few different things. At my school we have separate specialized classes that are separate from our regular class ie sparring class and kata class. This offers time to pratice specfic things and doesn't mess up normal class, also this is not to say that we do not spar and pratice kata in normal class, we do but this gives us the opertunity to do it on a weekly basis, for a fair amount of time -
Like most have said visualizing your oponenant is of extreme importance, but it is debatable whether it will sufice or whether sparring is needed, I suppose that is subjective and there have been several disscussions about this so I would prefer not to get into it

I better catch up altough I think this will be a clean sweep for kc -
yes ibuki does have to do with breathing techniques, as in "in ibuki" and "yo ibuki:", soft and hard breathing respectively. I haven't ever heard of the sytle before, but it would make sense that it is an offshoot of Goju

How to Start Trouble in a Martial Art Forum
LeaF replied to KickChick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"Post that no one should be a black belt under the age of 18" I oddly enough agree. I don't think people should be allowed to recieve the rank of shodan before the age of 18. I am not 18 and find myself placed in this exact situation. It is not that I don't think I am capable of being a decent black belt, not at all. The reason I believe this is that through my expirence i have found enormous benefits from "being held back". I will have to wait another year and a half before I grade. Prior to this I have also been held back at other ranks, because I needed to be training with adults to move on, which I do now. Anyways over this time period I have developed many personallity traits that I might have not developed, or developed as quickly otherwise. My patience and ability to follow things through has increased immeasurablly. I have grown as a person and I think these are lessons that would benefit alot of "children". I also now hold much less emphasis on rank and focus on my training and development of self. A quote often posted on this forums is " the only benefit to the easy path is that it is easy" While my jourmney has in no way been easy, but it is worth it in every way. I would like to further this thought by suggesting that even adults before "held back" for an extra year or two, because many of them could also benefit from the same lessons, altough this will never happen -

Good job everyone, this is where the game will start to become interesting.... -
How long did it take you guys to get to your rank?
LeaF replied to BKJ1216's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have been training in Goju for 9 years and have reached the rank of 1st kyu. This may seem like a while but I am rather pround of that milestone. The major reason it has taken so long is because I started young and graded too quickly. I ended up getting stuck at a couple ranks because I was too young. For instance I cannot grade again until I'm 18. Foruntately I turn 17 in a couple months I have trainined in kobudo for about 5 years, same rules apply though -

kata is extremely important, it may even be argued that it is more important that sparring. If one can understand the bunkai (application) behaind the kata, and master it's essence, you will never have to fight a battle. It is interesting that several people on this forum seem to believe that you can have an art without kata, but not without sparing. An art can be extremely effective without ever sparring. For example, in okinawa they don't spar. Traditionally none of the okinawan arts invovled sparing that was added due to japanese influence. So I guess this means all those karate masters couldn't defend themselves, and according to zero they were not even martial artists! Another example can be found in china. Take a look at the shoalin monks, they don't spar (they have their own forms simular to katas), but yet they are able to perform increditable feats of strenght, power, and agility, and you would be a fool to say they can't take care of themselves. It is very important to understand the bunkai and application of the movements, or else they will just be a mere dance. The kata can teach you balence, distance, timing, technique (how to effectively punch, kick, and commit numerous strikes), It's breating can keep your mind in focus so that when a situation of severity occurs your mind will be ready, it increases your reation speed and your ability to react to different situations, we must be able to adapt these kata to different situations, it concentrates and focuses your ki giving you highened awareness and prevalence and again it is not merely a dance. It is very important to visualize your oppentants before you and see yourself commiting the attacks upon them. So as you originally said, I do agree that if left on an island and you just praticed katas, you could easily be one of the best fighters there is if you understand what you are doing. So as you can see the lessons found in kata are invaluable, and some cannot even be taught in sparring, if that could ever be possible! No Zero, if you just sparr you are not a martial artist, just a fighter. Katas are not just dances, there is some martial value to them believe it or not.

WE step forward with our left aswell, but like killer said I don't see what the big concern is
-
I study a couple kata's he came up with... I too have heard great stories of him
-
I really can't pick one, I would like to by Chojun Miyagi, but that would be subjective since I study his art....

That is pretty cool, alot of questions

I must say I kinda agree with G95 here patrick, I think this is a great game and a look forward to continuing it but I do think this is a good suggestion which could help make the game even more competitive and perhaps next time if not now it could be implemented ? Oh well it's up to you, just a suggestion -
