What Martial Arts related books do you recommend?

thanks for the reply patrick -
Red J kobudo is just weapons. Congrats Tobias, the eku is a very cool weapon to use I enjoy it very much. As for other weapons I do not know what weapons you already use. I would train in the bokken(wooden sword) if your school offers it, not really a traditional okinawan weapon. My school offers Iaido in our kobudo program so we use the bokken followed by the katana. I also really enjoy using the jo (4 foot staff). If I remember correctly you already know the tonga, nunchuk, and kama. If you havent done one of those I suggest that, and I am almost certain you must have used the bo. My favorite weapon is the tongfa, I love swirling them around.

Thinking of Doing TKD!
LeaF replied to El Guerrero Loco's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I've had this observation as well, it appears to be this way because there are soo many tkd mcdojos, it is a shame too because there are alot of tkders who worked hard and deserve their blackbelt and these dojos just give them such a bad name. -
It is very important to have a great sensei, but it is equally important to having an great group of students who encourage a positive heathy environment to train in.

A Parable for Martial Artists; Mimic or Artist?
LeaF replied to Kyle-san's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Great story, I definitly think it is important to make your art your own, understand the art, and apply it in different circumstances and not just memorize movements, if that is all we do martial arts are no more then a mere dance. -
does Wka stand for world kickboxing assication or world kum do assication, because I am finding conflicting web sites

is there a link somewhere on the main page for this? -
depends how hard you hit them..... I would not do this kind of stuff in sparing, but in some situations it can be called for

I think that you should be fine. I am 5'9" but my legs are much longer then my torso. Having a larger torso can have great advantages though, since your center of gravity is lower then someone with long legs. I feel that in karate all body types can apply the movments and find out what works best for themsleves. You might have more difficulty with some things and an easier with others, you have to make it work

good luck, you guys are soo lucky at my dojo we have to be 18 before we can get our blackbelt, but it is something worth waiting for

I simple technique that will take someone out is as follows. Open your hand so your palm faces the floor. Now bend your index finger while keeping your opther fingers strainght out. Using the the knuckle of your index finger gently tap your adam's apple, if you hit someone as hard as your can like this, they will definitly be on the floor

How long does a student have to stay in each belt
LeaF replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
generally takes 8-12 months, altough I have been at certain belts for 2+ years, because there were age restrictions placed on me, but I endured -
your solar plexis are actually above your abdomen.... I do not believe sits ups actually assist this area. To the best of my knowledge I do not think your solar plexis are a musle, but rather hmm not sure seems to be a weak point ie temple. I really don't know how to help you some striking of the region will help a little, but it does not seem to make a large difference. I am rather curious to see what methods come up.... EOTT I do not think hitting them with bamboo sticks is the answer, although that sounds like an interesting method of training the abs. I pefer having a partner kick my abs though, that way he strenghtens his kick and I strenghten my abs

i do not think we are really different. You can't really compare a dojo to a class room. Whether we like to think so or not at school we arre always at competion with our peers, to get the best marks so we can get into the best school. Does this mean that we cannot help others out certainly not, but we may be more reluctant on how much information we spill. In the dojo there should be no competion. Everyone is to train themselves and should not be too concerned with whether others are doing better or worse then yourself. I do not think we as a whole are any different then others, althought I believe many of us like to think we are. Anyone can learn to be friendly or helpful and they do not need to take the martial arts. The martial arts are not the only way to learn these traits. There are many clubs of people who hold simular characteristic traits. Let us also not forget that people act differently in different environments. I know I act different in the dojo than I do at home or at school
