  1. awsome I am the fastest user
  2. lol make it happen Patrick
  3. Alot of it really has to do with the school. I would go and check out each of the schools, try a class and talk to the instructor. This way you will find out which school best meets your needs, and which environment you feel most comfortable in
  4. Welcome Back to the Boards
  5. To be honest I don't see anything wrong with what this kid is doing. He obviously is a gifted individual, and it looks like his training is not encompassing his intire childhood(according to his web site he only trains 45 mins a day 5 days a week, thats less then most of us). This kid is studying collage level math, which proves he is not some Joe, and if he enjoys what he does, why not
  6. some good ole ippon kumite (step sparing) can do wonders. Just get a partner. Stand in ready stance (feet shoulder weith apart and arms by your side) then get your partner to get ready with their left side forward and left arm out. They can either throw a front kick or a punch (while steping through ) and you have to react will the corrsponding block, when this becomes to easy blindfold yourself.
  7. Great job Patrick, The site looks great
  8. Well, this is how it is done at my school.... 5 kyu -bo and escrima stick 4 kyu -no new weapons are taught although 2 new bo katas are learnt 3 kyu -1 Tongfa and 1 Jo Kata are taught 2 kyu -1 new bo kata is taught and 1 sai kata is taught 1 kyu -1 new bo and sai kata is taught we begin bokken (wooden sword) work 1 dan - we use a katana and many new katas using the existing weapons are taught 2 dan - same as above, no new weapons but many new katas are taught 3 dan - here we learn the final weapon which will be taught, the kama As you can see from just our three posts, it really seems to depend on your school, and where you live, nunchukus are illegal here
  9. you could skip rope, I find that as a good way to work on cardio and agility
  10. A couple hours a day, mostly just to check this forum and some hockey pools and fantasy leagues I am involved in
  11. My dojo has all this except we have one giant room rather then two big ones, and I only pay $400 canadian a year for karate training, not to mention we get great instruction
  12. welcome to the boards, and good luck with your training
  13. Guys lets try to keep it civil, don't forget what this forum is all about, "getting started in the martial arts", if this argument continues at this level I am sure this thread will not be around for long. You have both stated your opinions and reasoning behind them in great detail over the last couple pages, may I suggest quiting while your ahead. I understand you guys may be very passionate about certain topics, and if you feel it is nessasary to continue this "disscussion" please try to tone it down a bit Cheers LeaF
  14. Yes good job G95 you deserve it
  15. I did that yesterday, and found myself limping to school today
  16. welcome to the boards
  17. Short Term Goal: to get my shodan(1st degree black belt) in both karate and kobudo (this should happen in the next couple years, for some this might seem like a long term goal, but I have been training for half my life so 1 year does not seem like that long ) Long term goal: To NEVER stop doing what I love, the martial arts
  18. what exactly are you having trouble with. Alot of people at my dojo have a difficult time getting used to the fact they have to roll on their shoulder. They tend to end up rolling on their neck or head, not a good idea. All I can suggest is get lots of pratice on a soft surface (mat, mattriss, whatever you can get a hold of) and don't hesitate or get nervous before the roll, just dive right into it
  19. ouch that is rough, I would suggest very light streching in moderation as you don't want to strain it further. Make sure to relax the musles to, have a hot shower, massage it is bit, or do some kind of warm up before streching the musles. Most importantly don't rush it, rome wasn't built in a day, give it time to heal properly . Perhaps KickChick or someone with more knowledge on this subject will be able to shed some more light on this topic.
  20. Many of you are so fortunate to remember so far back. I would love to have some sort of memory of my grandfather (who died 1 month after my birth ) anyhow I can remember odds and ends of my childhood, I think the furthest I can remember is around the age of 2 or 3
  21. I am a pretty big Jet Li and Jackie Chan fan, I also enjoy some of Chow Yun Fat's work
  22. I would think that it would not make a crucial difference if you were good at the kicks, if you were still learning them the added weight to your foot may slow down the speed of your kick and catch you off guard. I don't think shoes will really absorb the impack, in some situations they may cause even more pain, what do you think would hurt more, getting kicked in the head with a boot or bare feet?
  23. cool article Kickchick, thanks for posting it
  24. we keep our hands in tight, not to sure why though..... perhaps it has something to do will the increased speed of the spin, I would figure that you would have better balance if your right arm was out... perhaps someone more knowledgable in this can explain it further
