martial art, art of war, obviously meaning the must be strikes... if she can do a flash kick by all means do it, theres a strike in there... but pulling ure leg over ure head? useless... go to a gymnastics tournament for that
-
meh personally as a judge id score her mediocore for that form... shes good, much better than i am, but any value from that form, was washed away by the first about 35 seconds of it, it takes a lot less time than that to kill a person... its useless, and has no place in a kata, she would be dead..... but thats just my thoughts some people may think shes amazing at forms... i think she as a martial artist is amazing, her forms are terrible though

there will be the odd kata here and there that has a soft motion in it, this will of course be dependant on how ure instructor interprets the kata, and then teaches it... so i cant guarentee it but i can say there will be some... as for regular soft things the closest soft thing i can think of that ive done in shotokan is a crescent kick

Need to lose weight and gain a little muscle fast
obiwansbane replied to dippedappe's topic in Health and Fitness
no clue how to lose the weight, but as for the muscle, what happens is your fibres tear apart, and then use protein to create more. So on the "down" motion (back to where u started) go slowly to tear as many fibres as possible, MAKE SURE U EAT HEALTHY AND EAT LOTS OF PROTEIN, building muscle is like 70% eating 30% actually doing the stuff... hope it helps even if just a little, good luck with ure lady friend -
well firstly, that chick waaaay over reacted... in training, your going to get hit... mistakes happen.. anyways there are waaay too many posts here for me to read them all then reply so im just going to put in my two cents. dont aim lower, (stomach area) aim higher, head hunt, throw the punch with a kiai then pull the punch before making contact, use crescent kicks to get them scared and backing up then lunge with the punch, if they are good enough to see through your fake and score on you, they are obviously not stupid enough to make a big deal over being hit sometimes so you dont need to worry to much when fighting them, but its always the beginners you need to watch out for.. good luck to you i hope all works out in the end

silly bushido haha congrats dude keep it up -
crescent kicks are taught at our school, although we aren't a very traditional school, in my eyes the crescent kick to me is just a momentum build, although its cousin the axe kick can be quite useful as long as u dont snap ure knee in the process if you just want to know how to do it i can explain its quite simple really, so yah traditionally its normal to not have them, but if your all into gaining momentum to throw your kicks id suggest learning them

no its not, ull get an excessive contact warning for it. if your going to kick, either do it when they lunge at u (give them a solid side thrust to the side) or use a big front thrust (no jumping) to get them to back up and get intimidated

CONGRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATULATIONS! ure almost there! keep up the good work -
the big issue nowadays is taking hits... you can have flawless technique... if you cant take hits, your body goes into shock, your techniques become useless... the more you sweat the less you bleed... i read that somewhere and i think its an awsome saying... push yourself to the limit, make your body be comfortable where it thinks its time to give out... whiny students really used to bother me as a high belt, cause i could tell them to stop but not much else... im scared to really open my own school one day, because i know that i will have obsolutely 0 tolerance for whining or complaining about pain... because not only is my student injured, my reputation is injured along with it... how can i train kids, and tell them that these skills will help them defend themselves... when they arent learning anything practical? knowing karate gives some kids a big head, "ooooh i know karate i can take you"... no u cant.. any good street fighter whos never trained a day in his life, but has grown up taking hits, will completely own the blackbelt whos never taken a proper hit... flukes happen.. the punch will land eventually, and when it does, the fights over... if i ever picketed over something, it would be martial arts school that dont raise their students in a way that would actually allow them to fight back in some way and have a chance during an actual street fight

i've never known a dojo to ban punches to the head. My experience isn't all that diverse, but everywhere i've been the head has always been a target. We don't allow younger and less experienced students to attack the head in a friendly sparring match, but i know a lot of headhunters who pretty much only go for the face. And i agree with bushido man, it seems to be that they should have their hands up more. throwing punches to the head has not been banned... but making contact with those punches has... by MANY dojos... because nowadays u can sue for basically anything, and no instructor is willing to lose that much money over a simple strike... and every open style tournament ive been to has always had a minimal head contact rule, where if the head snaps even slightly on contact, u get an excessive warning. I think that this world is starting to raise a bunch of whiney babies... there should some limits on who can and cant take the martial arts... those who arent going into it seriously and to properly learn to defend themselves... and arent willing to go home with bruises in the name of bettering their technique, should not be allowed to train until they realize what it truly means to need to defend ones self... this has also givin karate a TERRIBLE name over the years... when i tell people i have my blackbelt in karate, they arent impressed... why? because karate as a whole is seen as one giant mcdojo by the outside world... and those few (ok thousands but it seems like a few) who truly have learned what karate is and what it means to defend themselves using karate, are outnumbered 10 fold by those who claim to have a black belt, but would be out of a fight after the first punch. mods i read this over it should be fine but i tend to get carried away... if i broke a rule please let me know and give me an opportunity to edit my post

lol fishy all martial arts incorporate speed, (that i know of) its all about hitting first, (tai chi u practise slow, but when u do it fast, it makes it uber ) its more about the practitioner than the style... these guys grew up in an era where martial arts were about learning how to survive, and people didnt sue for tiny little things, and nobody cried, etc etc... they trained that way... i find nowadays, martial arts have a name for being useless... because the real instructors out there cannot teach their art to its full potential and in doing so, bring out fake instructors, who though they think they are black belts, are really not... i wish theyd get rid of half the rules they have at tourneys, kids see a false sense of security in martial arts... they need to learn that a tournament and a real fight, are two completely different things as for the videos, that is really cool... i will definately look into it... ooooorrr... kez could u be sweet enough to lend it to me when ure done

our dojo has a policy that it takes a lot more than just pure martial arts skills to progress in belt ranks, especially to get a black belt. So we have never encountered the problem where someone red or brown would need to tell a child to stop talking/pay attention or get to work, only to see they cant because the kid is a higher rank than they are. Do not get me wrong we do have some really young high belts (prob highest would be one red belt i know she cant be more than 10?) but once again, she is really mature and handles herself well in class so she deserves it. just for clarification our red belt is directly below brown which is directly below black

not even his last martial arts epic, martial arts means the art of war or fighting? any form of combat is termed martial arts... its his last WUSHU movie... but i even doubt that, there has to be more! hes uber! anyways, i think its a great match up, im a fan of both, but in all reality i think jet li would own jackie chan still jackie chan is sweet!

i think now im more nervous bout ure tourney than u are!!!! when is it! i want to count down the days till ure response... what can i say... school is boring and im still in the process of finding a new karate school where i moved

for warmups we usually listen to lots of upbeat techno... (our warmups are kinda hardcore... depends on the mood of the sensei) and then when we do slow smooth like calming exercises, or like standing in say a horse stance (kiba dachi) for an extended period of time, he plays soft slow tai chi music

well heres my suggestion... cause im guessing they are all weenies who alone are insignificant its like ure X there are 0.2X but when theres 15 of them they are 3X... wat u need to do, is get 15 of ure friends and all go for a walk, in 2 groups... one with 5 people going ahead, the other with 10 behind a bit... when they try and take the 5, the 10 will show up and instant ownage... take em all out, they wont bother anyone ever again... then u sit on them, and call the cops... tell them what happened... they all get harrasment, assault, concealed weapons charges etc... their lives are ruined... they learn not to act tough... im sure numbers wont be a problem... u could make a sign up sheet at ure school and get more than enough people haha

should you punch first?
obiwansbane replied to little kicker's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
just thought i should mention this... it doesnt matter if they surrounded you and were just about to beat you to oblivion, you attack first, you risk assault charges... so i personally would wait for them to at least have some limb coming at me before hitting them (still premptive, they will go for the big obvious wind up, all u need is a quick jab to shake em up a bit, then u go with the full on attack) of course the best thing to do, is to take ure keys, put em in ure hand, and make them count... -
the first one, yes ure right its what we're talking bout... the second is awsome though... i wanna go "KAME.... HAME.... HAAAAAAAAAAA" and have someone fall over! where can i take this class? or at least see this video

Traditional Shotokan Striking in UFC
obiwansbane replied to juey palancu's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
is there a video of this fight? id very much like to see it -
the katana is said to be the "ultimate" because in all senses it is a good happy medium, it offers reach, without drastically lowering the usability in slightly tighter spaces, slashes and stabs well, and is extremely strong... as for what the katana can cut through, obviously there are things it cant, but in a real life situation anything u would need to cut, it would most likely cut, if theres a meter of lead in ure way, youd go around it... you wouldnt try n cut through it... as for the bullet, it was shot face on, if it shot at the side, the katana would snap in 1 shot, and NOBODY would be fast enough to cut a bullet with a katana cause if they tried it would most likely blow right passed and hit them anyways... an arrow being cut i can believe cause ive seen it done (by a person when someone shot at him) but not a bullet

Defending against a female assailant
obiwansbane replied to username8517's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
But what about this issue... she starts screaming and Joe Bob of the street decides he's going to save the day. Now you have two or more people to deal with, and the confrontation is significantly more dangerous. Not that this sort of thing is likely to happen, but I'm just throwing scenarios out there. she pulls the knife again and then joe bob sees that ure side of the story that u've been screaming at him from since he started approaching makes sense.. if not you lay out joe bob too, who will be charged with assault and then kick the girl... funny story about assult while im on the topic... some guy threw his full cup of coke (the giant movie theatre ones) at my friend who was kicking him out for sneaking into an 18A movie, and my friend charged for assault, and since he had multiple cases of breaking an entering and stuff before, they locked him up over it
