  1. just a quick pronunciation key that will help you... of course this is how its said in japanese it might sound different if an english speaker tries to say it.. Vowels work like this 'A' - ah 'E' - eh (like the e in egg without the g's... not like ay) 'I' - ee 'O' - a cross between 'aw' and 'oh' 'U' - oo so try n sound em out ka ke ki ko ku la le li lo lu ha he hi ho hu ta te ti to tu i hope it helps... i know it helped me when i was learning
  2. i prefer that vid.. mostly the same stuff i just think it was slightly better due to being timed with the music
  3. my chucks have 7 links... the total length of the chain is.. 13 cm.. with each rod being approx. 30 cm hope this helps.. and yes a bearing makes for a much more enjoyble experience but if u really want to ure way will work too
  4. practise your balance ALOT usually teaching a new class will involve doing a kick in really slow motion showing the chamber, the thrust and the rechamber then the set down... nothin is more embarasing than falling over other than that... i got nothin its mostly been said.. you will soon find out what works best for your attitude of life clashing against your students, and reach a happy medium where everyone benefits
  5. lemme check out my chucks one sec... ok mine is a steel rod with foam on it for the striking area... it has a bearing in it connected to the rod with two pins and then has chain with an odd number of links connecting it to the second rod which is the same... the bearing part is a bit advanced but it does help for spinning it
  6. keikoken! don't know it, except for its a one knuckle punch so i can guess what it is... but the name is awsome
  7. for the points... do they just have judges that score what they see through a timed round.... or do you fight till the judge says stop, then they judges call a point, and u begin fighting again? my guess is the first?
  8. yes my friend has it... he says though the moves are coined such as a diagonal motion with make the same or a very similar diagonal cut... he also says though than ontop of this its a REALLY fun game... i will have to go to his place and check it out and get bak to you guys
  9. what happened to heian sandan :'( it was my fav kata back in the day but no1 else liked it anyways congrats its great news
  10. hehe yes i love that too you will see a lil kid running around at a tournament weighed down by their medals and you stop them to say good job... just how happy they are makes spending the hours instructing them and bettering them so worth it
  11. yes and BM agrees with this... all he is saying is that timing your breathing perfectly will improve you, yes, but there is still room for improvement and getting even faster... this comes from training everything that we have said, and then incorporating it with your breathing timing... this will in the end lead to a faster punch than just breathing... as you have trained yourself to go faster than before and then on top of it add the extra speed that breathing will allow for
  12. well if it is the US open im sure they will have the divisions split such as traditional form, creative forms, softstyle forms, hardstyle forms etc etc... (of course ive never been there so this is just an assumption as it happens at most big tournaments) as for sparring, your division will be split in rank so dont worry too much about it... i can't help you too much as i dont know what kind of a scoring system they use... all i can say is go in a go fast... dont hit ure opponent to hurt them... just pull your attack and use a kiai to alert the judges so that they can see that if you wanted to you couldve hit them and you will most likely score for that... what i know for sure, is that you will see ALL different styles of martial arts... like im talking all over the place... open tourneys are a lot of fun, as you get to see many different style you would otherwise not heard of... if you see any cuties tell them i said hi
  13. a problem i have is that since it is not my school, i can't be too harsh, as if i lose my instructor students he wouldnt be too happy, as most of his income comes from running the school... but if i had my own school i know it would just be a kind of side thing, so like BM said... i wouldnt be too worried about the parents... its all a matter of whether you value the extra 50 buks a month enough to bend over backwards and take crap from little kids and their parents
  14. haha no here what happens is, they sit there and talk tough then one guy pushes the other then the other pushes back... while this is happening a circle forms and people start chanting fight... as the chant starts they try and get a hold of each other and take the other down... eventually one guy ends up on top and beats the hell outta the other guy till the teacher walks up and owns him
  15. well you see in the year that they were training they have, using their prior knowledge of the martial arts, been able to master to their dan level, the subtle nuances between the styles... this being said, if they can execute the same technique in both styles and can explain the difference, they deserve to be bragging about 2 belts
  16. ^^^^ seeing as martial arts is in and of itself all about muscle memory, the twitch factor will play a large role in any situation where he will need to use the punch anyways... that being said... training this will benefit the poster... and give the desired result... its not only whether the punch gets from point A to point B at a faster speed than it takes your opponent to get from point C to B... because if your opponent has a faster reaction time, their punch will still most likely land first... there is never just one thing that needs to be trained when looking to excel at a certain aspect... there are always multiple things that will benefit you and help you reach the goal u have set... what you are saying is not wrong, but it is kind of like handing in an assignment u know will get a 50% just so you can pass as opposed to adding extra work and effort to get a 100% on the assignment
  17. that is only correct to a certain extent... you need to have that fast breath synced to your punch... without a relatively fast punch to begin with, not amount of breathing is going to help you... because your breathing will just not match and throw off the rythem of the punch... i have also seen people punch without breathing just as fast if not faster than those who do breathe... the difference is the power/energy in ure punch
  18. that is true but ive found when you take them off... all of your technique goes out the door... the seemingly weightlessness of your arms do not let you realise that you are using bad technique... thats at least what ive seen when i tried it myself... i dont know if its happened to others
  19. well it really depends on how serious the case is... i usually opt for push ups... and if they arent doing them right just to spite me, i spite them back by doing something fun in class while making them still do pushups i havnt done this to a student before but wall sit would be brutal if they are really really misbehaving... have them stand against a wall with their back touching and then bend their knees till it creates a 90 degree angle with their back still touching the wall... have them stay like that for a while and they will understand why its best to pay attention in class
  20. wewt! congrats on still being able to teach probably the closest thing i could relate to would be teaching some people how to do heian yondan and then seeing them go to a tournament that weekend and place first in their divisions... i say this because i have no luck with the little kids at our dojo... it just doesnt seem to work!
  21. you just need to work on your reflexes... several ways to do this really... i will list them from fastest and most direct benefit downward.. first off get a kickboxing punch ball thing.. the ones with an elastic string on the top and bottom with the ball suspended in the middle, it then flies as you punch it.. the harder you punch the faster it will go... train with this for a while and you will see that as you are able to punch it more often, if you try without it your punches will snap oout faster second you could just use a pad or punching bag of some sort, just something that you can contact so that you know that you are fully extending your punches... line yourself up so you just barely touch it with a good punch, time yourself doing say 10, and then just keep drilling it till you get faster, you will want to beat you time, and if you dont make contact dont count the punch... lastly this is what i would do just because its fun, have someone whip golfballs or little rocks at you... you have to catch them or deflect them... sure itll hurt and it sounds dumb but it would be fun... this will work on ure coordination, reaction time, and the motion speed of your arms... since your reaction time increases... even if you punch only slightly faster... u still started ahead of whoever you are facing so you win by the extra speed plus the head start you got... i hope one of those three help
  22. well everyone here is telling you to go with the angels peaceful approach... im gonna be the bad influence i am and say... go with the devil if they make a complaint bout you getting extra training, next time you spar beat them flat out and say "maybe if you trained as hard you wouldnt have lost" of course dont do this during class, but after sometime... nobody should be jealous of you... im sure your instructor would be willing to spend extra time with them as well... they just arent dedicated enough to take the opportunity the you are... if they dont want to train extra that is their problem, but "time" spent at the dojo should be calculated in hours, not in years... you've put in more hours... you deserve what you get...
  23. indeed! good luck to you even though you dont need it you'll do fine... remember... even if ure about to collapse..dont let us know when u pass
  24. nope im a guy... another thing is when u have a girl with slightly a slightly larger, for lack of a more refined word chest it does make kicking kind of a dilemma....
  25. oh wow i wish our dojo had some of you in it... the girls at my dojo make me REALLY mad... they have this air about them saying im a girl so it doesnt matter if i try or not cause ill advance anyways just cause im a girl, then they are of course the annoying giggly type, where you'll be trying to work and they will be laughing over something and you have to waste time telling them to shut up, and then it comes to sparring... this is where i have fun... sorry for being disrespectful ladies, but they are like walls if u understand me... so thats where i get the satisfaction of beating the hell outta them since we have almost no contact sparring its not too hard... but it makes them realise that they arent as great as they thought the were, and that nobody is going to give them special allowances just for being girls... im just glad that they arent and never will be higher belts than me... i think it would cause me to snap.. but yah there are some girls who like the martial arts and train hard.. but if you are not going to train like the rest of the class, you dont deserve to be there with the rest of the class... plastic girls should stay away from the martial arts... especially if they are plannin on joinin up at a dojo i go to...
