if you go to a mixed style tournament the judges are not allowed to judge you based on whether u do the steps that they do or not, because even amoungst styles, different schools teach kata's differently... so regardless of what u do, if you look like its sposed to be there, to them, your doing the right kata

can i see these tests? cause i personally know someone who does acupuncture and from what i've seen of the "patients" it has been working

im sorry for this... but i just have to say it bearich... its called.... NARUTO! hehe i know silly me and my anime but in my defence its a good show!
-
rofl, depends, if its a fight between two guys who think they are uber tough and need to duke it out in front of the whole school, i wouldnt kick, just to prevent his friends from jumping in before the guy i was originally fighting is fully out. In the street theres no question... if you find the opening, boot them as hard as possible

first tourney? yay good luck! my first bit of advice, go in every division possible, its best to lose the fear and gain confidence at a lower level because if it was say ure first sparring tourney in the blue - brown division ud be going against people with 3 years or so of tourney experience and its quite intimidating... (well at least i seemed to scare all of the new blue belts that entered my division) as for your kata, try and visualize a fight as you go through the steps and look at where you block and strike as if you have a target in mind. DO NOT LOOK AT YOUR FEET WHILE GOING THROUGH THE KATA! This is something i find that is very common, and its bad, especially when ure trying to present a form. It shows the judges (who dont know you) lack of confidence, and no true understanding of what you are doing while executing a kata. And lastly, if you mess up, or forget a step, DO NOT STOP THE KATA! Improvise and add in your own few steps for about 3 or 4 techniques and if you dont remember the rest after that throw one last technique with a nice strong KIAI to make it look like you have found the ending of ure kata and then finish, Bow, etc w/e the etiquette at your tourney is. Okay a lied, not lastly... when presenting yourself to the judges, i have seen people yell out their presentation, and when it was done to me one tournament i wasnt very impressed by the participant. The yelling is not necessary. Walk into the ring with confidant strides, bow no more than like 30 degrees (so if ure hip was a vertex your body would make no less than a 150 degree angle) and then present yourself to the judges in a normal volume voice, that oozes as much confidence as you can muster into it. NO FIGETTING, SHUFFLING YOUR FEET, OR SHIFTING YOUR WEIGHT FROM ONE FOOT TO ANOTHER AT ALL! Once you have presented yourself bow, step back, and do your kata. once your done and have been scored etc. and are told to leave and someone else is called in, bow to that person also, and then go and take a seat to watch the rest of the katas. best of luck to you and i hope this helped you out!

this was really interesting... a bbc thing.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9kIGXF2kKk watch passed the accupuncture which lasts bout abour 1 minute and 25 seconds to reach the part about the Dim Mak master, i personally am a believer... especially so after seeing that, it may be not right of me to say this, but seeing a chinese master like that, really solidifies my belief alot more than seeing george dillman

we pay 50 canadian dollars a month which is 42.20 US dollars and 32.50 euros and 21.40 UK pounds huzzah for universal currency converters!

he said he takes shotokan karate, harder linear techniques i already told you some combos so just implement them at the right times and you should win, the chance you'll fight orange and green belts is very slim but it may be a possibility

Im sure they would have more than one instructor and would break it down into experience levels, allowing fresh people to start, with that much time spent training one should become fairly proficient in defence... although id say you go into the program as a side class, and get the degree along with a black belt (take it for multiple years) cause this way someone at a say green or blue belt level could claim to have a "martial arts" degree

Expectations of a martial artist.
obiwansbane replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
my friends are they same... they dont care cause they know basically they are protected regardless... but theres 3 of us out of the group of like 8 or 9 that are either brown or black belt so thats we dont concern ourselves overly about protection as for the kids that yell stuff... i wouldnt worry too much about it, i doubt they will try something, they just like to pretend they are sweet.... if i remember correctly (correct me if im wrong) ure from the UK? so i dont know your legal system... but in canada, if he attacks u first, you beat him to oblivion without breaking anything or causing internal bleading, and then charge him with assault on top of it... -
What's to many Black Belts?
obiwansbane replied to KempoMinistry's topic in Instructors and School Owners
our black belt groups usually max at 4, with about 5 there to test them... and out of those four at least 2 (the last batch had all 4) quit right after getting their belt... so our numbers dont grow so much... but if they dont deserve their belts, then i guess its turned into a McDojo..... thats all there is to it -
New to sparring-I need some crucial pointers and tips
obiwansbane replied to Jkoko's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
everyone here gave some good (albeit the same) tips... if you want more specific sparring strategies i personally (some may be able to give them to you without this info) would need to know what belt rankings you'd go up against and the age group... as sparring against white belts makes for an easy strategy to win, where as in the blue - brown belt, ull get owned by people who spent 2years in that division and i wouldnt be able to help out so much so all i need is whether its Stop-Point style sparring, or free sparring with Point Tallying (eg. 2 points for kick, 1 point for punch, 3 points for jumping kick etc) and what belt range you expect to be going up against if no tips come in time for ure sparring then good luck -
well if u have yourself well grounded in kihons, it may be fun to try and make ure own kata, if not two kata's i REALLY like are Kanku sho (sp?) and Empi i havnt learned empi cause its high for me, but it looks awsome! and since ure teaching ureself nobody can really comment on whether or not ure a high enough belt... good luck man

unfortunately, sometimes talking isnt an option that is available, although since u have some time before he tries again (if hes even gonna try again) it shouldnt be much of a problem... if push really does come to shove, you should see if one of your friends will help you out, because in a situation like this seeing as it would be at school more than likely, you should try and get a friend to just trip him up while hes occupied with u, and then try and keep him restrained until a teacher/principal can intervene, then legal action (assault charges) etc should definately be thought of, cause this is in my eyes a serious threat... i hope nothing comes of this for the sakes of you and your friends... i wish u luck man

Defending against a female assailant
obiwansbane replied to username8517's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
ah you guys are such gentlemen... if some chick tried to attack me, it would depend on the situations With witnesses = solid kick to the stomach, send her flying back if she comes back kick again (of course this is once you've gotten rid of any actual weapons other than her fists) without witnesses = make sure they see her hit me first, then kick her to the stomach.... kicks to the stomach always seem to work in slowing down ure opponents attack... (from what ive seen) they hurt, and cause them to get winded even if its very slightly, they wont rush in right away giving u time to laugh in their face -
uh that wasnt a yes or no question but im thinking that you are looking to take private lessons from somebody else?

Test is on Sunday January 14... right now im spacing out at random times and just focussing completely on the test... its starting to scare some of my friends a bit im really stressing out over it, like not even caring bout upcoming school finals and such so i think that getting the good lucks from you guys will really help calm me down and hopefully i can stay clear headed until then... i will be sure to let you guys know how it goes whether its a pass or fail....
-
yes stay circular makes sense lol and this is a 1 shot thing, never faught 3 on 1 before... thnx for all the tips so far guys i understand almost all the ideas thrown at me so far, so i will try and get some of my friends to attack me and see if i can put ure tips to use.... i will for sure let you know how it works out in the end

i know exactly why you think that when you think about karate when one thinks of karate they see hard snapping motions that can only work one way, against another karate opponent, but quite opposite to that, karate is just like any other martial art, its not the moves you learn, or how you learn how to do them... its how you execute them in a time of need that matters... once uve learned all of the moves, with practise and training you will find that in combat situations moves you thought could only work one way, are blocking and striking in ways u didnt think they could so yes give it a shot, and its great that your trying to change what u think....

for currency converter xe.com helps a lot anyways as for meaningful stuff, 1. $50 (cdn) which comes out to $42.60 american 2. Shotokan karate 3. classes (karate classes that is) twice a week 4. if you pay for a month of either kickboxing karate or mma you get to take the other two for free if you so wish (all 50 buks a month so u cant just take the cheapest then get the rest free ) and kickboxing is 2 days and mma is 1 day so training 5 days a week, as a higher belt if i so wish, i may go into the lower belt class and either help instruct or just go into the ring and practise whatever i would like to at the time

for my test i have to go for a 2 minute round against 3 opponents... to make things worse i would already by nearly spent after fighting 1 opponent for 6 minutes and 2 opponents for 4 mins... so against 2 opponents i would keep one away with kicks while trying to assault the other and take him out, but what should i do to last out the 2 minutes against 3 opponents?

Kudo shodan at last.
obiwansbane replied to Dragn's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
many congratz man! good job sounds like torture though hehe, i have to go through something similar although its 2 mins against 1 opponent 1.5 mins against 2 opponents and 1 min against 3 opponents... i dont have to win, but i have to still be at least defending myself at all times
