NO to low kicks! Yes to high kicks!
Rainbow_Warrior replied to 50inches's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Both are useful... If you can kick high with power and speed , why dont you behead some bad boy ? Low kicks can be devastating too.... I would not recommend you to take one (just 1) low kick from cro cop. You will not walk for several days. -
Pushups and the Environment.
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Aces Red's topic in Health and Fitness
Its all mental buddy . When I was in highschool, I just could do 40 push ups in my house . When my wrestling coach shouted , I could do 110 push ups and got a 2nd place in a (tiny) push up tourney. Mohamed ali said : First beat the mind , then beat everything. -
Maybe I didnt explain myself very well ( and my english imperfect performance does not help very much) .They say to try to sweep and get out if you can. They dont have any problem with the guard...But the strategy of the style is ´´use the guard only as a transition position to something better ´´ and not use it as a primary place to be or attack from. That is why I would lose a point in a tournament If I take a guy into my guard from standing position. . I have seen a lot of excelent bjj guys who take the oponent directly to the guard ,and submit from there. You could do that in a luta livre competition ,but if you fail the submition you you will have a -1 score...So it is not forbidden. Of course it maybe a a institutional policy to make difference from the sibling twin bjj. Yes , I have to try those with this guy . Maybe a butterfly guard can help me to sweep him...the sweep that pushes his kness with my feet holding his both arms is easy to do , and the size does not matter in the same way of the scisor sweep.

If he take me down , and it ends in my guard or at least half guard its not a problem. I like to use the guard to control strong people. The main problem I have is that in my style of grappling, we are encouraged to not stay much time in the guard. That is the primary difference between luta livre and bjj ( and the commandment of NO gi). We can not pull guard in tournaments . It gives the other guy a point ( like he performed a take down). The idea behind the guard stuff ( in the luta livre view) is that luta livre was created in brazil specially for vale tudo...and ´´ in a vale tudo contest , the guy in the top can punch you in your guard ´´-in my head instructor words ´´ We use the guard in the same way of bjj, but the preference is to get out from there quickly... But the submissions are all the same.... I work from the guard anyway , because I like it and I feel confortable from there , but I have problema with my instructor because that.

Judo vs Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Jermz's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
BJJ is a a adapted version of the pre war Judo. Today there is a branch of Judo called ´´ Kosen Judo ´´. They preserved the old judo rules and said NO to the time limit in the ground of the modern Judo. Mainstream judo or kodokan judo, is 70 % tachi waza ( throws , take downs, etc ) and 30 % newaza ( mat work). IMHO I think that judo has every technique you can see in BJJ , but BJJ ground game is much more fluid and uses the guard in many ways that are not so visible in judo. In western world most of Judo clubs are mainstream kodokan...kosen is available in some universitys in japan , and I have readen about some club in england.... You can check some kosen judo , to see what judo groundwork look like. 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzTVjgkGvGk 2 Both are great.... you said it..Bjj is more ground based...judo is more throws and take down based..... If you find a traditional judo school...it may look more like bjj ( and more with the grappling boom of mma ).... My 2 cents -
Yes... you are right ... I need a better strategy against big guys...the problem is I dont have a lot of heavy guys where I train. I went to fight him in the same way I roll with a guy like me.... I shouldnt shoot again with this guy...next time I will try to take down him fron the clinch , gaining control of his hips... I know several throws , but....without a gi they dont work very well ( and less if you are sweating )
-
Well , today I rolled with a guy who has been here for a month . He is a +220 lbs strong guy , kinda heavy construction worker. I am a 190 lbs huys , not very tall. This was my first roll against an aponent with significative weight difference and brute force... I rolled with guys sligthy heavier that me , but the have good technique and dont rush like the guy of today. I also rolled with mad guys...but they were not so heavy. The match was like this : I tried to single leg him , but he did a sprawl and smashed me against the floor...It ended with me in half guard and then he mounted me with brute force , but I could make a good escape quickly. I pulled him in to my guard , and could handle him from there. He eventually got tired. I had a chance to triangle him...but he lifted me like a rag doll .. I continued with the guard stuff....and my instructor give me the order to fight another guy ( we were a group of 3... the other 2 guys fight always with me ). I tapped the other guy really fast and with ease.... ( he was also a new guy..but with a normal weight)...

Anybody watch Dateline?
Rainbow_Warrior replied to kkennedy219's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that Moral standars and MA are not the same things.... Common sense (for many) says that traditional martial artist share higher standards than boxers , wrestlers or people in general... But that is not true. Not all martial artists are sensei Mishagi from karate kid . We also have some Kobra kay in this world... As lord ariel said , we all are persons.Going 3 times a week to a dojo dont make a guy to be in control of all his evil. But MA or sports can drive you to a healthy life , and be a grow up person. That is true. I am not a monk , but I am a religius christian. And I apply what I beleive to my MA training and life. -
Excellent Book
Rainbow_Warrior replied to ps1's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
What book plenty of techniques would you recommend ? I just have a book of grappling ( but a lot of dvds and vids) -
There is no magic formula agains multiple oponents. Grapplin is useful to get on your feet , striking is good to survive on your feet. Talkin crap about grappling , saying that ground skills are useless against many guys is an argument used against grappling by fanatic strikers. Grappling and striking are two faces of the same coin : Fight. The only way to fight more than 2 guys and win is to be a heavy muscled guy with much technique. If you weight 300 lbs with the fight knowledge of fedor , you may win. Lets be realistic.....and accept our limitations. 99 % of martial artist can not fight more than 2 guys (and fight 2 guys may be tough). A guy with outstanding training , is a guy , one guy. I fought once against 5 untrained guys. My MA skills helped me to stay alive , not to win.
-
Sure....It is my last effort. You are right. The problem is... Sometimes I end in bad position because I am very slow on the ground ( and a bit slow when I am on my feet ) And a skilled grappler would read my intentions , but maybe not the first time I grapple against him... I said it works 95/100 well the 5 stands for the fights against outstanding grapplers ....But many of the good fighters of my gym dont need to mount me to win.... I know some word class grapplers who kick my crap just from the guard

full contact JJJ
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Sure ..... those JJJ are amateur guys....maybe they are at the same level of some amateur mma. Some of them grapple very good...but the striking is kinda messy IMHO. -
Several times....when I am the one in the bottom in mounted position , I extend my arm to ´´push ´´ the dominant figher , action that gives him the opportunity to perform an armbar. I do it intentionally , and then I do the classic armbar defence (I grab the attacked wrist arm with my free hand and push against the guy with all my weight ).When that happens...I free my arm , and go to side control with me on the top. It works for me in 95/100 fights I know it can be risky...but if you are waiting for the armbar , you can have a quick reaction.... what do u think ?

full contact JJJ
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
So....you choose match for its appereance ? I would like to fight in both.. , but I think that I would last longer in this tournament than in the UFC ( where I can be killed in 4 seconds ). I dont say that the JJJ tourney is soft...I say that UFC is more dangerous..... -
Adonis , I have been trainin´ grappling for 8 months....but in the first 3 months I lost a lot of classes for different things. ( exams...parents visiting me, illness....etc). Now I train MMA 2 times (sometimes 3 , when I miss some college class)per week and its very grappling oriented. Sure....there are guys who are impossible to catch with guillotine...I know that I got to use other things... I do ....but if I got the chance to do it , I just di it. The problem is that... I am a slow guy and armbars need speed and reaction...I dont have them....I just have a lot of endurance and decent strenght. I should work much more on other submisions

full contact JJJ
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Why ???? I think its like MMA but wearing a gi ( or viceversa , cuz I guess its older )..... you can there do the same stuff that UFC guys do . -
hey guys.... I was taught a lot of techniques , but I have success with just a few...specially those against the neck. The guillotine specially is what I use very often. I have never submited a technical or strong guy with armbars , kimura, etc ( I did it against weaker/lighter/newer opponents) I know that the guillotine is very basic and raw , but I find it a cool tool. I have ´´won´´ sparring matches against very superior fighters , or complicate them using that technique from standing ,standing and then takin em to the guardo...or directly from the guard..... Maybe I am just lucky Am I abusing of this technique ? I try to do lots of things in combat..but guillotine and other neck submisions are what work better for me....

HMmmm . My momma told me that when I dont have good things to say about something , dont talk.... These people wanto to be a serius sport...I dont get it... What is next ? Poker Karate ? Kick boxing -Warhammer ? And.....any boxer good with some basic chess skills , may resist 2 min in chess and then KO the other guy ..in less than 2 mins. The boxing part seems to be dominant under this view...
-
Agree 200 %...That is exactly the way I think about this topic. Other two cents.... In addition of that most people do head hunting....those hits landed in the chest or belly arent painfull when those kind of people execute them.( and less painfull with the adrenaline). Its very hard to see an unskilled fighter Knocking out other guy with body attacks... ( unless they are in the floor , kicking like 9 weapons said)
-
well I am not talking about blades. Even the most conditioned hand or forearm cant stop a blade without damage either. You may stop the hand/arm carring the blade...but not the blade. I am talking about a fight w/o external tools ! Yes....but he would need a lot of power (or mass) to KO you if he does not have the propper technique and movements. Is rare to get Koed by a punch landed on the stomach ( in the street). Browlers in general dont use straight punches , and if they do , start the punch 1 feet behind their heads.. I am just making general affimations. Of course some street fighter could take advantage....As I said...it stills being risky.

Hi...I found a filipino arts school 10 blocks from my house. I was interested in cold weapong combat , speacially western and medieval.... But I do not have a school like arma here... The school´s website talks about using knives , sticks , daggers , swords , and a long list. of melee weapons. They also say that teach military combat with knife/bayonet in special courses... The core of the teachings is sparring with wooden or rubber knives for the begginers and then use the real thing when you are advanced....They also have armors to play full power. It is not very expensive , but I could just 1 time a week cuz i have no time ( on saturday afternoon). Will the weapon training affect my mma training? This school...also uses some grapling when fightin with weapons... specially jujutsu.
