  1. there are lots of them around. do a google search for "dojo software"
  2. I dont think "failing" is a good term to use when not passing a grading. perhaps something along the lines of "continuing the test at the next grading" or something like that would make them feel better, rather than saying "passed" or "failed" if a student has the proper mind set, not passing a grading should not be considered as a terrible thing, just an opportunity to continue to improve without the burden of learning a new sylabus. (or something)
  3. there is another thread, i beleive in the TKD section called "help with roundhouse kicks" the TKD roundhouse kick and the mawashi geri are pretty much the same thing. check it out, there is a lot of help in there.

    Kata

kata had to have been developed in the first place tho. the people that devised the kata back in the day (word) would have based the kata on situations of the time. i dont think devising new ones are disrespectful, but i wouldnt go replacing the old ones. maybe as part of something like a 3rd or 4th dan grading you could have "devise a kata and the bunkai for it"
  5. does that mean i can grade a 7th kyu?
  6. What would make you think that acheiving black belt isnt realistic? What i mean is there must be something that you feel is holding you back or you wouldnt have asked, its not your age, i have seen people get there black belts at a much older age than you. Black belt is attainable by anyone that is willing to put in the effort (providing they have some coordination ) that being said, not everyone has the patience to stick it out to black belt either. so as long as you are committed you should not have any problems.
  7. to quote jiffy from this forum "teaching is the best way to learn"
  8. just ask your instructor. there is nothing wrong with asking questions about stuff you dont understand.
  9. my sensei will wear his Black belt till its nothing more than a black string
  10. even if you do want to go back, you shoudl be able to say to the instructor, i want to get back into it but for these reason I'm not allowed to do any sparring. i doubt he would have a problem with that.
  11. i agree, i dont think you should be given a BB in TKD because you have one in Shotokan. i also train in both until recently and its really just a mind set, you can do the moves you just need to tell your body how to do it. learning a new art is easier for someone that has an art behind them than for someone off the street.
  12. we have a chronic asthmatic at our club and the instructors have no problem with him using it. there is a difference between illness and lack of fitness.
  13. having done both "olympic" and traditional TKD and Shotokan karate i can honestly say that the difference between trad tkd and shotokan is negligible. the sparing and even basics was based more around kicking over hand techniques, but on a whole it was the same, even the kata/hreungs (sp) have similarities to them. olympic tkd is a different ball game tho (the one i did anyway). the basics were done one the spot, kicks concentrated more on speed than power. however, we did have the odd power class where we did power techniques such as fully followed through round house kicks, haymaker punches etc. which were good fun, but not really TKD
  14. in TKD we learned backfist 2 ways. one was fast and snappy, the other was strong and followed right thru, both were called back fists. however, a powerful punch with the front hand wasnt called a jab. ah well , you say tomato, i say tomato hrm..... that doesnt work as well in text
  15. my black belt never frayed in the 5 years i wore it.
  16. "so i dont have to fight"
  17. actually, by definition, i was talking about dictionary definition, that shows that a jab is a quick motion, regardless of whether you are talking about a punch or something else.
  18. My thoughts are with you. my uncle beat lung cancer, and he wasnt very fit so a BB should be able to aswell
  19. tho really, the jump from 10th gup to 9th gup isnt a massively big one. anyone with decent hand eye coordination can get it with minimal TKD training.
  20. sorry, its pretty late hear, and i just skimmed thru the first message and only looked at the replies. was just looking at imdb for some old school stuff. i remember the old enter the ninja to be pretty good. wouldnt mind finding that series again, they are making a new one supposedly.
  21. bruce lee was the ultimate. fists of fury was fantastic (chinese connection for all you americans) also loved some of the older van damme such as bloodsport and kick boxer jackie chans old movies (police story, drunken master, young master) were fantastic MA movies, his new stuff are just great movies (apart from tuxedo, that was pretty average) i cant beleive no one has said karate kid. i wouldnt say ralph machio is a MA icon, but the philosopjy of this film is MA through and through Tony Jaa in ong bak was sensational, ill need to see more of him jet li has been great in what ive seen, including some older stuff such as shaolin temple and the black mask, as well as things like romeo must die, cradle 2 the grave and kiss of the dragon. the one was ordiinary and i am yet to see hero or fearless. the dude that played lui kang in MK was pretty good, but he hasnt had much of a run since. steven segal is great too, his moves are so simple and effective. i especially love exit wounds. brandon lee was pretty good in the short time he was in the movies as well. i rekon with time i could come up with more too.
  22. ok, so its not fully extended, but just before. yes, the fisted is rotated from facing down to facing up, but what i was getting at was that if you do a fully extended punch rotating that way it will not be as powerful and more likely to cause injury.
  23. i think that even if you do have a contract it would be void as he is not providing the service he has been contracted to do, by starting the classes late.
  24. see, a power jab sounds like a oxymoron. by definition a jab is a quick in and out punch.
