  1. my TKD was 1 hour, which is fine, but my problem was that 1/2 of that was used by warm up, which only left 30 mins for actual TKD. My shotokan class was 2 hours, but has since been dropped to 1.5 hours, which i think is the best for a class as it doesnt drag but there is plenty of time to cover what needs to be covered.
  2. If it is one of your goals you shouldnt really have to convince her tho, she should support you cos its what you want to do. providing you have the money to do it and its not going to stretch the budget at all.
  3. im surprised that so many people have not included bruce lee in their list
  4. ive seen something similar to the "Miyagi Family Kata" being performed by a goju. i also know you can buy the "secret to miyagi family karate" in Bali. I think it has the base of goju, with some cinema-fu thrown in.
  5. bruce lee jackie chan jet li dan inosanto (he is fantastic to talk too) they would be my three. edit: or 4, (guro inosanto was added at the end)
  6. better site for these https://www.chucknorrisfacts.com
  7. if you are worried about your son getting hurt while sparring, try to get him to line up against the more senior grades. people that have trained longer have more control than the other people he might spar against. this means that he (and you) can concentrate on the job at hand without worrying about getting hurt.
  8. throwing the first punch doesnt always mean you didnt act defencively. a violent shove in the chest is an aggressive and and more than likely it will esculate from that. i voted on the second option but the first "strike" doesnt always have to be a punch/kick/technique to cause injury.
  9. just as further evidence to my point before. we had 1 junior in the friday night class, and she trained really well. listened to everything sempai had to say, took the criticism given to her and worked to improve it. just goes to show that juniors can train well when they want to, however, the hard thing is getting them to want to when they can muck around with friends.
  10. there is no such thing as bad training when it comes to martial arts practising a second art will only help however, i would wait a bit before starting a second one, as you may find it hard to learn the same technique 2 different ways. however, it may also be easier because you havent developed habits in a particular style yet.
  11. er, i think you will find that ralph macchio was the karate kid. joe esposito was in power rangers (no i didnt know that i looked it up, well i knew the ralph macchio part) dont forget christopher lambert also you have the likes of the MK and Street Fighter games that would have had some influence
  12. i struggle calling my instructor sempai in training let alone out of training. probably because we were mates before i started training. Hi sempai
  13. i like the back fist. i find it to be more versatile as it can be used for either power (if you follow it thru) or a snap. it also makes for a good counter if you deflect the persons attack opening up the back/side of their body
  14. what about "wouldnt want to see you in a dark ally" or "my fathers cousins brothers former room mate used to do karate, do you know him?"
  15. yeh yeh, give me crap. but it works i feel all pumped up after some strong power chords and a synth
  16. good luck for your grading let us know how you go!
  17. i find it odd that cleaning the dojo is part of the requirement for your grades. you pay this person for the right to be taught and use their facilities, and if people want to help him tidy up thats great, he can even ask for assistance. but to make it a requirement for grading is a bit overboard in my book. instructors?
  18. im thinking about taking this up towards the start of october. from what i gather its a street orientated version of traditional hapkido. the school i will be going to teaches in english and they wear street clothes. should be good.
  19. i remember when i got back in to MA after an extended brake, it just felt so right. tho i still dont think im as good as i was before, but i am heading towards it. i also find that my understanding is improving now as well, not just the technique. welcome back to the MA world. you will wish that you never stopped
  20. i must say that as an adult, i sometimes find training with juniors quite annoying. as they are around the same grade as me, they are always right next to me in the line. when they start mucking around it disrupts my concentration and affects my learning. the main problem is when there are 2 or more there. they joke around with eachother and really dont put much effort in. however, seperate these juniors from each other (ie make them perform kata infront of class) and they do really well. the most obvious time was the last training before a grading. they said "we dont have to try tonight, cos only tomorrow counts" trying to explain to them that the training between gradings counts as much as the grading itself just didnt sink in. when the juniors arent mucking about, they show quite a lot of potential, but when they arent in the mood, i find it disrupts me. i do my best to block it out but sometimes i just want to throttle them.
  21. ps3 is going to be more expensive that Xbox 360 for 3 reasons, 1 sony always overprices, and 2 by the time it comes out xbox 360 will have had 6 months in the market for the price to drop and 3 all the sony die hards will rush out and buy it leaving merchants panicing about 360 sales. as for mortal kombat, dont forget it all started on the arcade machine (the coin op). i now have midway arcade treasures on xbox which has 1 and 2 on it, but for the life of me i cant get the fatalities to work.
  22. yeh, i was thinking that. a video of this technique would be good.
  23. i find it interesting that you had to regrade from white due to a gap in training. i would have thought (and all you instructors out there can correct me if you like) that once you have acheived a grade you are entitled to it, regardless of how long you stop for. you may, however, not be able to grade to the next grade for a period of time as you may require some time to get your standard back up to the correct level.
  24. Good stuff. now for more learning!
