saying that your martial art is the best style is like saying that the sport you play is better than all other sports. it doesnt have to be the best to give it your all, you just have to like it the best.

Last Move of Choon Gun
Zorbasan replied to scottnshelly's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
oh wow. its been so long since i have done ITF forms. can anyone point me to a website that has videos or diagrams for them? anyway, bunkai is only a relatively new concept for me, as in the 10 to 11 years of tkd we never did it, but now in shotokan its a key part of the grading. from what i have done of bunkai, is that it is a loose translation of the kata, not a replication, so you are permitted to change moves and steps slightly. therefore, with the double staff block could be a throat grab and a mid punch or something like that. if there is one thing i have learnt its to step outside the box. -
my guess is its utilising muscles that you havent used a lot over the years. jsut practice practice practice

coming from TKD, jump kicks were developed to dismount attackers from their horse esp the spinning ones. so unless you have somoene on a motorbike charging you, you dont need super height on your jumping kicks. what is good for a jump kick is distance, i can make up a good 2 or three metres from 1 step with a nice jump front kick. you may not hit with it, but the oponent will be worried about the kick to try to attack back than if you just made the distance up by stepping or rushing them.

easiest technique to score with would be a good kyakuzuki creating the opening to hit with it is the hard part.

About the style(s) used in "the karate kid"
Zorbasan replied to Azula's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
looked pretty real to me, (the karate, not the actiing) -
big and flashy is great for demos, but if the idea of the demo is to bring new students to your school, make sure you do some basic and practicle stuff aswell, self defence demos are good for this. if you only to big and flashy, people with think "ill never be able to do that" and not join.

Those "special" students that we all have...
Zorbasan replied to parkerlineage's topic in Instructors and School Owners
from the point of view of a student, training with someone that doesnt want to be there, plays around all the time etc, you may feel frustrated cos your time is more valuable, but i also feel frustrated because im paying for this tuition and the majority of the time is spent on these trouble makers. the ones that are trying but still getting it wrong, they are not so bad, because they want to do well, 1 of 2 things will happen. they will suddenly "get it" where everything will fall in to place and they will put the right foor forward and do the correct block (they may not do it well, but they will do the right one) or 2, they will get fed up and leave. fortunately at my school, the one that i felt was the worst time waster (who actually fell in to both categories at the same time), no longer comes to the school, and i feel that the class has benifited from it. we do have some juniors that muck around from time to time, but not so much as to disrupt the whole class, and they can generally be brought back on track easily. -
i like the point of kata being able to train alone, sure i can walk up and down the back yard doing basics, but i feel that with kata, its like a movie that you have watched a hundred times, but still pick up something new each time. the more you do a kata, the more you will understand it, and understanding kata is understanding karate. your point was kata is useless in kumite, which it may be (i dont beleive so, but i do beleive that there could be better ways to train for kumite than kata), i move that kumite is useless in karate. to know karate is to know how to defend oneself. i can go to any bar and find someone that can put up a decent fight.

As most of you know, crocodile hunter Steve Irwin passed away earlier this week. something that more than likely wont make it as big in the international media is that earlier today, aussie v8 supercar driver, which is probably the equivalent to NASCAR in the US, and australian motor sport legend passed away after racing accident. he was 61 my thoughts go out to his family and friends. I hope this is the past in what has been a really bad week in Australia. edit: in all the shock of the week, i left Peter's name off, i have now added it to the title
