  1. Weclome aboard!
  2. We use it to pay all our bills online. Many companies send bills via email, so you just click on the total & pick when to pay. We uses Check Free in the old days, but this is much better, in my opinion.
  3. Some styles do call kicks by slightly different names, but they are mostly the same. You would call them by the method used by your instructor. The white karate uniform is almost always just called a "Gi," at least in the U.S. Sometimes a belt is called an "Obi," but not usually I think.
  4. You really need to see a physician about it. You only have one heart - you really need it to work right. They can fit you with a monitor to record your heart over time to determine what is happening. I really doubt that a doctor would consider such a condition a waste of time. Good luck.
  5. Maybe your abs aren't strong enough & that's somehow hurting your form. Your body should be completely straight. Try doing hyperextensions after the pushups to get rid of the pain - pushing your shoulders up while leaving your pelvis pushed down to the floor.
  6. To get away, make a fist with the hand that is grabbed. Grab that fist with your off hand & use it to pull the grabbed hand free. When you get free, both arms will be cocked for a strike - a back elbow with the grabbed hand, an elbow with the off hand, or a punch with the off hand. The other option is to grab back. If you can twist to grab with the grabbed hand, use it to pull the attacker into a punch. If you grab with the off hand, pull the attacker into a knee strike or head butt to the nose.
  7. Welcome aboard!
  8. I doubt you will find much. Comcast shows old ISKA bouts now & then.
  9. Back pain is always tough, because a doctor can't see pain. Pain in that area could be the S-I joint (Sacrum-Illiac), degenerated or bulging vertabrae disks, muscle spasms, or even (I hate to say it, but I knew a guy who found one through pain) a cancerous tumor. Casues of back pain are long and varied as well, and include mental as well as physical causes. My one recommendation is that if you go see a doctor or chiropractor, don't let them tell you that they really know what the problem is, because they most likely do not. Chiroprators can help, but they can also drain your money for weeks before you figure out it isn't helping. Doctors will send you for thousand-dollar tests that may or may not reveal the problem. The only thing that helps my back is epidural steroid injections and staying stress-free. Good luck.
  10. Very cool!
  11. Nail biting can be difficult to stop. Drugs, behavior therapy, and aversion therapy (putting bad tasting stuff on your nails) are all options. If it is a severe problem, you should probably see a professional.

I doubt they will toss you around the first night! Your first classes should be with beginners like yourself, so don't worry. My initial soreness when I started tended to be in my abs and my sides, from using new muscles. My legs sometimes hurt from running, but I would think that if you already walk a lot, your legs should be fine. Exercise tend to be bodyweight, like push-ups, sit ups, leg lifts, sometime yoga-type things. As for the one year contract, that's a tough one. One week to try it out really isn't enough to know if you want to do it for a year, nor is it enough time to know if you like the instructors. That said, the one year contract is very common in my area.
  13. Welcome aboard!
  14. When your body tells you something, you should listen. One of the hardest things for some guys to do is to admit that their bodies will no longer support the activities they did when younger. Live long, stay healthy, take it easy!
  15. Welcome aboard!
  16. Welcome aboard, but I don't know what GKR is.
  17. We heard a few words of wisdom from our Sensie this week on what his requirements were for his students: 1. They have to know the kata - how to perform them, understand them, and know what the kata is teaching. 2. They have to know how to fight and defend themselves. 3. They have to be in good physical condition. These are all very much in the Goju Ryu tradition.
  18. Boxer's fracture. I have a bent bone from one from college. It took 2 keys off my octave reach on the piano. Doors >> Hands
  19. I run 4-6 miles per week, just started in the past 6 months. I am clearly in the distance-building phase - I am doing well if I can run a 12:00 pace. I am aiming at the Peachtree 10K as well, but my goal is to break 60 minutes.
  20. Welcome aboard!
  21. Thanksgiving is the last Thursday in November in the USA. It is a chance to celebrate (traditionally after a harvest) your blessings - and give thanks to God.
  22. If the issue is not being ready to hit hard, maybe you need time on a heavy bag. If the issue is that you are just uncomfortable hitting other people (who are apparently there to get hit), then try to realize that people actually want to get hit - it makes them better fighters.
  23. I'm doing just fine. Welcome aboard!
