  1. Welcome aboard! Looking forward to your contributions.
  2. I have found that practicing techniques very slowly helps me with form & balance. I am forced to remain balanced for the entire move, versus being able to count on getting my foot back down before falling over.
  3. Do you punch guys in the chest? It's not usually a target, altho the kyuskushin guys seem to chest punch a bunch.
  4. This is the site I was thinking of. http://www.fightingarts.com/reading/article.php?id=215 Glad I could help.
  5. Since black belts themselves mean different things in different styles, I'm not sure how an equivalent would work. Generally, a black belt means that you are an advanced beginner, ready to tak on higher-level learning.
  6. I'm having trouble understanding what you mean. Are you saying that you cannot make a 90 degree bend to the fingers? I have seen articles on a different way to make a fist that is not curling the fingers under, but instead laying the first 2 fingers flat against the palm to make a tighter fist, but I can't recall where. Maybe this would help you.
  7. If you are on a college wrestling team, do you not have a strength coach there?
  8. These techniques need to be practiced on a bag so you have feedback on what is working.
  9. Well, it's not really a franchise, but owning the Ferrari F1 team would be pretty awesome!
  10. I think you've misplaced a decimal? 4 kg is 9 pounds, and if you could gain 9 pounds of muscle in one session, we'd all look like Arnold.
  11. No insult taken, I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from. I hope I am not coming across as insulting, either.1. This may be true. Still, the effort to change directions will come from muscles. Larger muscles will be better able to change the direction of the body. 2. I don't follow proportionately lighter. You can be any height and still be the exact same proportion. Cars versus trucks is a different analogy. Trucks have large frames built for durability. Sports cars have larger engines versus their weights for speed. Acceleration and jumping ability are more governed by the size of muscles (also the fast/slow twitch thing) versus overall mass. Some very fast sprinters are small/short, some can be quite buff (Ben Johnson when juiced up). 3. Smaller target, yes. I doubt though that aerodymics has anything to do with speed at the relatively low speeds of human body movements. 4. A lower center of gravity will be more stable against a similar mass at a higher center of gravity. I'm not sure how it would compare against a larger mass. Stability would be a function of height of center of mass, total mass, and width of the base. My position is that these can possibly be factors in "tall/short, small/big" matchups, but they are not hard laws of physics.
  12. I prefer espresso drinks - I have my own machine at home. I usually get the Starbucks Espresso blend to put in it. Double shot, latte, W/ splenda - it's like Coffee Ice Cream!
  13. I'm not exactly clear which law of physics that would be. I don't think you can make a generalization about size & speed at all. If small meant fast, wouldn't all the top fighters be short? The top sprinters? The top something?I fear that small folks who assume they are faster will get a rude awakening from a quick big guy.
  14. Welcome back!
  15. Welcome aboard!
  16. Very funny stuff. A great podcast. "get ninjascopic."
  17. 1. Don't pull your arm back before punching. 2. Watch your shoulder as well. Don't roll it before you punch. 3. Practice kicks so you don't have to shift your weight before getting the kick off. 4. Don't move your arms before you kick.
  18. Welcome aboard!
  19. I keep a desktop calculator on my desk.
  20. Hola! Welcome aboard.
  21. We are taught two primary things for a grab - any grab. The first is that if it is easy to escape (like a same side wrist grab), you can do so if you want. The second is that if you are grabbed, grab back. After you grab back, you can strike, throw, apply a lock, or grapple. I will say that some of the solution offered (including mine) do require at least some strength versus a "grabber." A person much stronger than you can grip your arm and keep you from twisting it to get away or gain leverage.
  22. Welcome aboard!
  23. A great summary of the types. I might add a 5th skill around threat evalution, including when to use the 4 facets, or when to attempt to disengage. I would not be able to put it so well, though. Well done.
  24. I have done watercolors & Bob Ross (the 'happy little trees' dude) oil painting on the past. I enjoy watercolor more, but people seem to like the Bob Ross more (not that I hang out wtit art critics!). I took up watercolors at age 35, after no previous art stuff at all. It was a good lesson in not labeling myself. Too many times we makes statements like "I can't paint," and then make it come true ourselves. Try it, you'll like it!
  25. Welcome Aboard!
