Get videos that Bill "Superfoot" Wallace has done on the subject. I think you will learn alot from them. Still not as good as going to one of his seminars.

Thanks. I spent 2 years in a shorinkan school and have a great amount of respect for them. I wish I had not moved back to cleveland so I could have continued training with them but I did and other things came about that are great also here.

Myth, Alot of systems have created their kobudo or weapons kata to fit their system. Many have modeled the kata from the empty hand versions. I have done this with my weapons system also to a great extent but not totally.

I agree! That is very cool of you, Brandon, to share your knowledge with another dojo. Great spirit! You demonstrate your willingness to better karate. I admire that! Thanks!! It is important to me that I help whereever possible. Its not about furthering myself for promotion (even though it would be nice) its about doing my part to better the martial arts community.

did you open the dojo? post some pictures. Just signed the lease on Friday so we have quite a bit of work. We are going to get some before and after pictures and I will post them. -
Mine was I had a instructor that didn't know any kata and just made up stuff. Didn't understand anything behind it and I actually got the point of correcting him. This was a man that started in the early 50's while in korea and took some karate in Japan (total of 5 hours) and claims to have trained with Funakoshi. There are many like this and not many taht turly understand the depth of kata. Its a sad reality.

What a treat I am sure. I have trained with Bill Wallace twice a total of 8 hours and he just amazed me so I can relate a little.

Robin, I do not know where in Minnesota you are but here is a Shorin Ryu - Shorinkan dojo. I hope it helps. Authentic Ancient Arts Minnesota 75 Civic Center Parkway Burnsville MN, 5537 Sensei Bill Martin

Congratulations to your instructor.

I know you have mentioned in the past that you are not much of a person to want to hit someone and thats ok that happens so yes I would agree with it being a mental block. I suggest using a heavy bag and focus pads to help you. Remember control your techniques and the other person will be ok and you be able to fight back. I have a lot of tips on things for kumite but without seeing exactly what you are doing its hard to suggest the right thing or what might work for the situation.

The True Martial Artist
Brandon Fisher replied to PlasmaShock's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The irony is that Im somewhat saddened by people that think martial arts is more about respect/discipline than it is about fighting. Look at any martial arts tournament and tell me whos regarded as being the best martial artist- its the guy whos carrying the trophy- regardless of how nice a guy he may or may not be, hes regarded as the best because he beat everyone else. If you want to judge the skill of the martial artist based on his development as a peacefull human being, than Ghandi would be at the top of the list- Im going to base it on their skills as a fighter and how well they can teach someone else to use those skills. I am not saying that it is not about fighting I am saying it is not the only aspect. -
It was so long ago I really don't remember. It was in a high school weight room downstairs from where we were training at the time. It did use free weights and had a large platform to place your feet on to push the weight up with.
