  1. I can see why a matayoshi kobudo student wouldn't like that as well. If I had taken all that time to study matayoshi kobudo I would have some issues also.
  2. Kanazawa Sensei's kata is amazing at least in my opinion. His kata is more like the way I practice kata not exact but close, however his is by far better.
  3. Good glad I could help.
  4. work on cardio the next couple weeks to help the endurance level.
  5. I think its very reasonable and yes I do have a link for you adn a suggestion. If you are near Kyoshi Doug Perry I would go talk to him or one of his students about kobudo training since you are in north carolina I thought of that but not sure exactly where you are. Hanshi Heilman's DVD's http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=65838&langId=-1&product_parentId=15098&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=15098&parent_category_rn=15070 Hanshi George Alexander's series is also very good. Here is links to his Bo http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=86219&langId=-1&product_parentId=13627&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=13627&parent_category_rn=13756 http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=87958&langId=-1&product_parentId=13627&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=13627&parent_category_rn=13756 Sai http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=84389&langId=-1&product_parentId=13627&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=13627&parent_category_rn=13756 Nunchaku http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=84914&langId=-1&product_parentId=13627&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=13627&parent_category_rn=13756 Kama http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=84903&langId=-1&product_parentId=13627&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=13627&parent_category_rn=13756 Tonfa http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=84391&langId=-1&product_parentId=13627&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=13627&parent_category_rn=13756 I hope that helps.
  6. what do you think of your Kusanku kata after watching it? I don't like saying mine is better than yours unless something is really bad. But I don't move that quick in kata. Mines slower with a lot of power except in some spots that are very explosive.
  7. Yes timing is everything. I always try to help offset the balance another way if possible when using ashi barai.
  8. Nishiuchi Sensei is one of the top instructors and I have seen some of his tapes. However I think that Hanshi Heilman's are very precise and clear.
  9. Looks good. The timing is different than the Kusanku version I do but its still quite good. Still one of my favorite kata. Enpi was quite good also.
  10. No that is common to call a founder of a organization kancho.
  11. Kendo not as much as Kenjutsu, Iaido, or Iaijutsu.
  12. Well the title of professor is not a martial arts title. Its been adapted to martial arts. I am not greatly familar with Korean martial arts titles but the Okinawan / Japanese titles I am familar with. Courtesy and respect begins with those who truly earn it. Those who demand it don't deserve it. Those that demand it are more cult like than most anything I have seen. Those who demand it and beat it out of people are not truly sensei they are dictators. My students call me Sensei because I have earned their respect, I do not nor have I ever asked them to do so. They do it on their own free will. The only time I correct someone is when they call me Master Brandon. I hate the title of Master I don't feel I am anyones master, teacher yes but not master. Sensei Is not a title that is given by certification. Sensei (teacher or one who has gone before) is a title of resepect for ones instructor. Traditionally only one Sensei is within a dojo many use it to much describing all black belts within a dojo. Sempei Is more or less nothing but a apprentice instructor. Renshi First level of the teaching certifications. (Man of High Attainment) Usually used at 5th and 6th dan. Kyoshi Second level of the teaching certifications. A fully liscensed master instructor or "wizard" (according to Unante) Typically you will find this title used by those not less than 7th dan but on rare occasions possibly 6th dan. Hanshi The highest level of teaching certification. Usually awarded the most senior karateka holding rank of 9th & 10th dan. On some occasions like with Patrick McCarthy the title has been awarded to those who hold the rank of 8th dan. Kancho Superintendent or dojo cheif. The director of a club. Kaicho President of an organization Soke Head of family Shihan Liscensed instructor. Implies high level or master instructor. Sempai Senior Kohai Junior Sorry for the rant but seriously professor of martial arts and many other titles are not a traditional title.
  13. I would not perform or demonstrate kata like that either but it was very much set up for demo purposes. I like the element of music and lights though.
  14. Correct. knifehand block = shuto uke
  15. Inexperienced hook punch I would use mawashi uke more than likely. A more experienced fighter I think it would depend on the situation.
  16. I agree the minimum needed to end the situation.
  17. too hard from okinawan karate perspective. Yep guess thats why I never settled into Shotokan kata very well.
  18. Here is my reasoning after 15 years off of training how much will someone remember? Now if they do remember quite a bit but not all of the material if they are just a bit rusty then I would say keep the belt.
  19. An example true shotokan karate.
  20. I would probably suggest double gradings also.
  21. Thats a very good example. Not all styles do it exactly like that but they should show that kind of power and sharpness.
  22. Sorry got a bit busy but didn't forget. https://www.fisherkarate.com/budo-kai.htm just right click and save the image. (note its kinda large so be patient if it loads slow)
  23. It all depends on the system and its philosophies. This is very true also
  24. Thanks. I agree the masters rank thing is very political.
