Around san kyu and ik kyu I have found or right after recieveing their shodan. -
That is a first I have ever heard of a kata referred to as a night kata or one to be used in low light.

Safetly and quickly almost go together. If there is a delay that can be bad.

I have never trained in Goju Ryu but it has had my interest for a number of years. My interest in it really caught with my finding of hojo undo and the goju ryu methods of conditioning and strengthening. Here is a website for you also on Goju Ryu: http://www.iogkf.com/

Unsu is one of my required kata for Rokudan and I have never had the opportunity to learn it. Should be interesting and challenging.

Don't get me wrong I still feel it is better to stay on your feet or get up quickly but that doesn't always happen.

Thanks now I learned something new

The problem I have with my current association is that at 5th dan, I think I am just granted the title of Master after testing. I think the test is just like the other tests, and I am not sure there are any different requirements. I guess I don't have to be called master, but I am not sure what to do here. I feel the same way you do in many ways. I to technically have the title of master but I hate being called master and tend to correct people. I am not a master of anybody or anything. I am a student of the martial arts for life. I at best am Sensei and thats all I will ever be in my mind. If I ever make it to 10th Dan I will still just be sensei. Many organizations like yours give the title of master at 5th dan sometimes at 4th dan the title bothers me. I have done a lot of research over the past few months on title and I have found that the title Shihan is normal at 5th dan. I was always told 6th dan was it. I was told Renshi was 4th and 5th dan which I have found was not the case but that it was at 6th Dan. Only time I use the title Shihan is on the promotion certificate I issue. The calligipher who did the kanji recomended it and she is japanese so I took her advice because her first suggestion was Hanshi or Soke and I did not want that. Seen to many people claim the title of soke and have not ever done anything for it and plus not understand what it is or means. A title that may be appropriate for you at 5th dan is Sa Bum Nim I have noticed korean stylists using this title at 5th and 6th dan. I am not a korean stylist nor do I know much about the true korean titles. But to be honest if you are not comfortable being called master then I would not allow it. I hope that helps a little.

I have someone outside my system that is willing grade me to 6th Dan but I must meet the time in grade which is still another 2 to 3 years and the only reason he has agreed to this is because he has seen me come up through the ranks from San kyu to godan. I won't self promote either just not the way to do it.
-
I agree promotions can be done via a sensei's black belts Mas Oyama got his 9th dan that way. But the way this guy did it was shaky with the O Sensei thing.

There is so much inconsistentcy on title. Just to echo what as already been said the titles of Renshi, Kyoshi, Hanshi are teaching titles. Sensei is teacher or one who came before. Grandmaster I have heard so much garbage over this one its discusting. Grandmasters are 9th and 10th dan black belts typically. Sometimes the status is considered at 8th dan. Nothing lower ever!! Many people misuse the titles or don't understand them or just think they are deserving of them so they use them. Masters rank "shihan' is typically at 5th dan some start at 4th dan which is becoming more and more previlent. Watch someday a 2nd Dan will be a master. Some organizations consider master at higher dan grades like I said most is at 5th dan. Sorry if I sound harsh I am stick and tired of all the misuse of title. I even saw someone get promoted from 5th - 7th Dan by his own black belts and then call himself O-Sensei even had in embroidered on the back of his gi in big letters.

Jiffy, Don't ever apoligize for having an opinion on a subject. You have a right to express your feelings about things.

I had a carry conceal permit when I lived in Indiana and I am a very good shot real good with a Colt 1911 .45. But the first pistol I ever shot was a .357 magnum. Yeah it was a bit scary. I do not have issues with people having a carry conceal or carrying a firearm as long as they are responsible and know what they are doing. I have told many people if you carry a gun you had better be prepared to fire it knowing one pull of the trigger can kill someone. I would not ever require it for a promotion to black belt though.
