  1. Yes I do agree with you. The history is so twisted around sometimes its hard to find things, but still very interesting. I have been researching the history of karate for the past 12 years and still feel like I am a elementary student on the subject. A book I purchased recently is really good and seems to be very accurate as it is based on information from very creditable sources. Its call Unante By John Sells. You can pick it up at https://www.martialsource.com just a early fyi its kinda pricey.
  2. Pulling away sounds like it was sufficent but having not been there who knows. If the guy was that intoxicated he may not have even realized he grabbed your arm.
  3. After finding that name in the encyclopedia that was my best best guess also. Kez, Do some research on the history of the kanku kata its very interesting.
  4. Actually Shotokan having not actually being a name of a style but Funakoshi's pen name Shoto and Kan being school the style was named by Funakoshi's students from what my research has shown me. The karate that Funaskoshi taught in Japan was Okinawan since Funakoshi was from Okinawa and had always studied Okinawan Tode as Karate was not adopted in until the laste 20's or early 30's sometime. Sorry drawing a blank on the actual year. However Shotokan evolved into a japanese system as it got older and varied more and more from Okinawan Karate-Do.
  5. Ok my assumption seems to be wrong. I just found it in the Original Martial Arts Encylopedia. According to it Kokuson was one of the original names for the kata. I am still unsure of its origin except for it is okinawan. It might be a difference in dialect in the language.
  6. It sounds like it may be a korean version but I have never heard of it. Kwanku, Kanku and Kusanku, and kushanku are the only way I have see it or heard it.
  7. I have never come across one that didn't do some type of drillls
  8. True it is Karate Do in my eyes
  9. I hope I didn't come across being offensive I have seen way to many people be called teachers that had no clue but they had a certificate saying they were certified to teach.
  10. I like that OTI idea. Way to look at things
  11. I have that experience everyday I get out of bed.
  12. The chin and almost worse if not worse in the armpit that hurts bad.
  13. I disagree that everyone can be taught how to teach. There are teachers and then there are those who are not. Methods can be taught but that doesn't always settle in. Those that have the ability and are unsure of themselves they can be taught easily and they can grow into great teachers. I was one of the lucky ones I am a teacher by nature I have a way about me of being able to teach things easily. New ideas of methods click with me sometimes in the middle of classes and I am always thinking of new ways. My wife is the same way. Some will never have that joy and I think its unfortunate some like I said can develop it.
  14. Thats right 2 hours a week will still get you put in the hospital most times just maybe not in the cemetery. People constantly tell me you have to hit people many times to drop them my experience has been for the most part hit them hard adn hit them correctly the first time and they drop.
  15. Wish I could help you there.
  16. Sohan, I have had few nasty rounds but wow you have had more. Glad you came out ok.
  17. Doesn't the supporting leg have to bent slightly to get that 'bounce' feeling when your snapping out the kicking leg? From my experience yes that is much easier to apply it and won't put unneeded stress on the base leg knee.
  18. I like circular movement and cutting into an attack when blocking like goju ryu.
  19. Here is a dojo that I found on google that teach Uechi Ryu. http://www.bushi-kan.com/
  20. Richard, There is a good site based in the UK for you. https://www.makiwarapost.co.uk Hope that helps
  21. Kanazawa Sensei has a video out that illustrates the kick very well. I agree the snapping action muct be quick and very sharp and it is not completely to the side its a little off. It can generate quite a bit of power but not anywhere near Yoko Geri Kekomi.
  22. OSS!! My sensei at least the one I truly consider my sensei was hard the training was very physical but not brutual there was a lot of care involved none the less hard. I always went home sore and worn out but loved every minute of it. To this day I like to push my students to this point. This is why they are karate-ka and not wannabes. Thank you so much for making this post its so true.
