  1. This isnt strictly a karateka versus a boxer, but i was just kinda curious because i had never though about this before, what if a person takes out a gun or knife on you. I know in karate provided that its a close range we learn how to defend against a person who draws out a gun (but of course not stop bullets or anything liek that) and how to stop a knife attack, but what if a boxer was facing someone with a weapon. I was just curious.
  2. Just wondering, what would you consider too many black belts, cause where i go, almost half the class is black belt. Although if it is "too many", i dont really care because they promote rather slow (in the little over a year i have been there, i have gottent to my third belt including white and the lower belts take a shorter time to get to), and they are as good as any other black belts i have seen. I was just curious as to what percent of a class that are black belts would be consider too large of an amount.
  3. I dont recomend kicking straight on at the knee. It would have to be from the side or something because i was sparring this really really big guy at class and he threw a kick while i was also going to throw a kick and i wasnt really paying much attention (i know i should have been) and my knee cap slammed into his heel and it was really hard like the force required to break a board when put together the two kicks. And i got a big lump on my knee and he had a really really sore heel, but we would still be able to fight well, so i dont recomend kicking th eknee unless its your last resort because you can injure yourself in the process and not really hurt the other person too badly unless you kick exactly the right spot and if they ar emoving its a little hard.
  4. It just make a whoel line of not quite as good martial artists, because people who dont know what they are doing cant teach others what to do correctly, unless its a mistake. But when people get their belts too quickly they dont really fully learn everything needed and then go onto the next belt and if they are earning belts that quickly they are probably forgetting the basics and they dont really remember anything and it all jsut goes crazy. It also makes martial artist look bad especially when you ahve been studying martial arts longer or anything liek that than someone else and they say they are a black belt in whatever martial art and then everyone else asks you if you do a martial art and you said yes and you say like a orange or green belt its kinda annoying when you have been studying a lot longer than any of the other peopel there but they seem to think they are superior because of the color of their belt. They dont get that its just a belt, there is no knowledge magical stored in it.
  5. YAY!! There is someone i agree completely with for once!! Good point Steve_K
  6. lol, but, whatever. i still Think it would be fun and if i start to get pounded really bad, i kick his leg and run as fast as i can.
  7. Thanks for posting that. Now i know i dont need to worry about getting stronger from excerisizes. And your right about chi not being so mystical and stuff, but its more fun to believe in it, so i choose to. But you do hvae a good point and i understand it and your probably right, i just like the concept of chi so i stick by it.
  8. I would think an arnis practitioner would win, but i dont really have much to back that up its just i am a little biased towards eastern martal arts and i practice a little escrima although i'm not really very good. But someone should have an all sword martial arts tournaments. That would be fun to watch. It wouldnt realyl decide which one was best, just who did the best, but still it would be fun to watch.
  9. To be honest, yes i would like to fight one of them. I'm not saying i would win, but it would sure be fun.
  10. Its still fun to watch. In this one book i have a picture of a monk lieing on a bed of nails with three swords lieing around him and a wooden board on top with another monk on that board who has a couple of cinder blocks on him which another monk is smashing with a really big hammer. If it was just chi that prevented stuff from being cut into pieces though, then the air would be as hard as a rock and you could barely move. But i do think that if you learn how to focuse chi properly you can do trick like that along with a little other types of training. So, long story short, i deffinately would NOT attempt anything like this as its too dangerous and you cant really tell if its gonna kill or not you until you do it. But its still fun to watch that kind of thing.
  11. Yeah, i dont really know much about muay thai, and i didnt want to say that tae kwon do was doing the kick wrong with the instep, but if i were to giv emy hoenst opinion, an instep kick could easily damage your foot, so i wouldnt recomend it.
  12. That happens to me all the time too (but its not like constantly, just like once a week), but i dont really know anything about it though.
  13. In the style i practice there is a kata called I-Hon kata which also does breathing techniques. In fact its basically all breathing with a little moving. You breath out to make the chi move into the other parts of your body which moves yoru body however you want or doesnt move it however you want. They thing is if your muslces are tense, the chi cant flow. You need to relax and breath and mvoe from your center (a above your lower area) (search hara on google if you dont know wher eyou center of chi is). I just allows you to practicing moving your chi, but just to say something all of the katas in karate, form what i have learned, can be refered to as moving zen, but sanchin focuses more on it for people starting the kata.
  14. Man, you are saying what we are all thinking. I did not understand that song at all, i mean besides the fact most of the song they were mumbling, but it was a wierd song.
  15. My very absolute best strategy on the streets is to run as fast as you can and if he catches you and puts a knife to you asking for your money, i would give it to him.
  16. I dont really have much opinion on it to be honest. It was pretty cool, but it was more suited for himself since he was left handed and he incorporated throwing the short sword into the style. People expected it when he had it in his right hand but he was left handed so he could throw it better with his left and people didnt expect it. But there was also a lot of other stuff that didnt involve throwing it. That was just one thing in it. It was pretty cool though, just dont know all that much about it.
  17. Good post. IT wasnt extremely long, but its was meaningful and nice thing. I think that if what you want to find is a spiritual path, you will find it eventually whether you take a spiritual martial art or not. Also if you are willing to embrace some of the spiritual concepts in martial arts you might achieve it faster. Well thats probably me just going in the same direction as you as i enjoy that part and you enjoy the muay thai. I think if you do what you want, you will eventualyl find a spiritual path too.
  18. Just do which ever one you think looks appealing. Here is a website with a breif description on many forms (but almost certain its not all). http://tkdtutor.com/02Taekwondo/Styles/Chinese.htm
  19. In karate we do round house kicks with the ball of the foot case its more of a snapping action but i would assume its ok to kick with the instep. Its not the traditional thai kick, but it works. I mean if you go to a class they might do condition for the shins so you will get used to hitting with the shins, but just do whatever you feel is right.
  20. Yeah, since i love martial arts, if the person i like did martial arts too, it would be great. Like i have two sensei's and if you havent guessed it yet, they are married.
  21. There are some of those people everywhere even at the place i go to where its supposed to be a peaceful art hence the name "the peaceful way". But still its fun sparring them cause they are usually somewhat big and htink they are real strong and kidna just charge you or go crazy. Its fun cause in my style we focuse more on dodging or pushing away so i just dodge around them and they just keep swinging and swinging til they are tired. So usually only begginers are liek that or people who havent been to class in a while because after a little while they have to change or get hurt.
  22. Wow, thats kinda a wierd way to deal with a situation but at least it was non violent i think. But there were deffinately better options though to be honest. But i dont think the church should punish him that much since it was just because a person was trying to beat him up.
  23. I think i read a story about Oyama Sosai. It said it had an amazingly strong punch, but it was when he was very young and he lost his fight, but thats pretty cool for a 300 man kumite. That would be awsome to see a huge crowd of people all taken out by one guy. Its kinda mind boggling to think of but relaly cool too.
  24. y2_sub, yeah i know that too, but its still pretty cool. But he was a very good martial artist fighting wise too, i wa sjust saying some of the things he could do.
  25. I do sit ups (or kinda sit ups, but close enough to sit ups) every night. Could anyone tell me if would that be bad for my chi, cause if it is i am going to stop. But yeah lifting weights from the logical viewpoint that i can think of is bad for your chi becuase it makes you use only your muscle and you get used to using yoru muscles only and it could probably start to block your flow of chi if you do constant wiegth training wher eyou get used to using muscle power to move.
