  1. lol, great point. I dont like it when teachers do stuff liek that cause when they wind up teahcing stuff about liek japan or china and start talking about like the samurai class or marital arts or like yin and yang or philosophy i usually knwo more about some of the stuff than them, but they never believe me when i answer stuff on tests or projects because its either not correct according to the deffinition or something like that.
  2. Thats in yoru style alone. While that shwos that there really arent alot of black belts, some people might just read that wrong jsut cause some people can be really not smart but there are probably like hundreds of different styles in the world with many black belts, but still that is a good example of if there is like 1000 or even 10,000 or more black belts per style, its still not very much at all when compared to the rest of the world.
  3. Were i go, it snot really about getting to know the techniques well for the next belt although you do need to know them but not really well. What kinda happens is that you need to learn a a little bit of a certain skill for each belt, like orange belt is awareness and you need to make sure you are looking before you turn or notice whats going on, and green belt is power. And there is stuff liek that so you arent gonna be tested unless you knwot hat stuff and to know that stuff your not really gonna need to think so just so long as you know the techniques work and go and can perform the katas after having ot do 100 of each kata at home (so yoiu better know them after that) you should pretty much be fine.
  4. Wait....since when has yoga been a martial art? As far as i know yoga isnt a martial art, but its still fun.
  5. I think we are all pretty much saying the same thingy except mos tof us (including me) arent very good at explaining this.
  6. lol, i agree with the art of nike-do for the msot part, but you are probably gonna have to take someone out to run away so you still need to knwo how to fight and fight well to get past them fast.
  7. Pulling punches can give that negative effect, but it can also give the positive effect that it increases your distancing, and maybe thats not a matter in your style, but wher ei go we focuse on chi alot and sometimes distancing is one of the factors in it. If you are focused you can choose to go through them. Also when you are practicing drills you have to make sure you or your partner are trying to hit through you. ONly in sparring do e say you cant really hit them hard. When in drills we say if they fail to block your attack, hit them. I dont know how much that is alike or different than yours but whatever.
  8. I have been learning piano since i was 5 but thats not really say much cause i'm only thirteen. I have also been playing saxophone for like 3 or 4 years. Something liek that, i am too lazy to figure that out and i have to get back to my homework, but person abov eme, wow, thats a long tiem to play the drums.
  9. I know alot of peopel are going to be mad at me for saying this probably or think its stupid, but i something i was just thinking, is if people are trying ot hit you at school, just have a little bit of fun and do what you want as long as it doesnt involve seriuosly hurting them or anythign worse than a few light hits, but jsut have some fun and if that means running, then run, or if its dogdging dodge, or blocking block. Just do what you think right.
  10. Lol, but in class we learned something called the rice dance or sometimes called the undu. Its called taht because it follows the design of the symbol for rice because you jump around in a set patern and its basically a dodging exersice/technique and after you get that part down you start adding in set attacks, but it can really be anything. ITs fun practicing with partners with hand pads. We also tried it with our eyes closed and everyonce in a while someone would get hit once we started moving the pads still with our eyes closed or if we didnt have partners everyone would open their eyes and be somewhere else.
  11. Where i go the unstructors kidna informally test you many times before your test so they can tell if your ready. Because as a whole class we go over everything for up to that belt rank even if there are lowe rbelts that night there who dont know the stuff, they are just uplled aside and work on something else. They dont have set dates for tests either, they will just pull you out of class in the middle of class and ask you to do the stuff without actually telling you you are testing although it gets kinda obvious when they have been working everything you know for the past couple of classes and now they are yelling at you telling you to go through everything you know and going really fast. Its kinda ocnfusing, but the senseis know when your ready and you roughly know when you gonna get tested. Thats one of the reasons everywhere why there arent that many failings because people arent gonna test if they are sure they dont know anything at all. (although i dont know how the black belt test where i go works because its a three hour test while we have a 1 to 1 and a half hour class and the community center we are at closes at like 10 when we start class at 7:30ish)
  12. We do bunkai which is just kata with peopel actually attacking you so unless we do it so you dont have to go exactly as the kata goes just the same moves but not the same timing (which is like half the time) then its kinda the same thing. I know you guys probably practice bunkai too, but there isnt really all that much difference there. Its just prearranged kumite with more than one person.
  13. I dont know anything about that, but its really cool, and it makes alot more seem possible, so i am almost sure people are gonna bash what you just said, but i like it and i'm going to believe it. ANd people are probably gonna bash what i just said about how if i just believe what i want i will wind up killing myself, but o well. It seems reasonable to me, so i am believing it.
  14. Wow, so 1 percent of people do martial arts, then according to y2_sub 90% of them dont reach black belt and of that only about 0.5% from what i have read reach 2nd dan/degree. Wow, thats low. I just put it in a calculator and the percent of people in the world who ever reach their 2nd dan/degree black belt is 0.0000005%. Thats pretty low, but after that most peopel continue training so it doesnt get as low of percentages for the next belt ranks of those who have already reached 2nd dan.
  15. It kinda seems like power and control need to be worked on at the same time. Then speed is when you have gotten it down. I think technique and power are the same thing i just havent realized what y2_sub and the other people have been saying.
  16. I know, i was kinda just trying to say i was too shy to say it, and also you werent mean for saying it, but i'm getting a little off topic too so yeah.
  17. ITs only really her.e in america and a few other places were we have those mcdojos, so not many peopel in other pats of the world have experience in martial arts and the ones who do are good because its a good dojo. So i would say excluding the mcdojos deffinately less than 1%. But then like 0.5% of people who get their black belts reach 2nd dan. Thats a whole lot lower.
  18. Yeah, good point. Thats actually what i though too, but i didnt want to be mean and say they shouldnt create katas because it can cause them to practice bad habits and something that hasnt been prefected over time, so i jsut sai dit iwas fine and gave an example of how it can work over time but probably not right away. Listen to Sauzin, Sauzin said it alot better, and has alot better point than me.
  19. Fencing is a martial art. Think about it, odds are that if an average kendo or kumdo practitioner and an average fencing practitioner fought each other with real swords (i dont know why you would be giving such people real swords unless they are really experienced practitioners) and fought to the death (Still dont recomend this either) i would put half my money on each so when the fencer stabs the kendo practitioner and the kendo guy chops the other guy in half and they both die i win both ways. Would you really like to face a fencer? I mean its not as practical for the most part when tehre are more than oen person and odds are not as many people practice it as long but there are probably some (and it usually doesnt have the spiritual aspect which is why i prefer asian martial arts) but in a one on one duel between the two i would bet they are both gonna hit the ground unless one has a lot longer reach. Well actually if i could only bet on one i would bet on the kendo practitioner or kumdo if thats there because i think those are more effective as they have the spiritual and discipline aspects and other stuff liek that (chi/ki/qi too) but they can all be effective.
  20. You CAN make your own style but chances are it wont be too good, but it is possible to be good, just not likely. Also, miyamoto musashi did have training because his father was a martial artist who trained him in the traditional jitte (which looked different than today and more effective but not able to really carry around) and something else. But i fyou ever to get a match let us know how it turns out.
  21. Yeah, who doesnt want to fight witha really big axe. I mean the bigger the weapon the more fun. I mean a giant sword would be even more fun, but good luck finding one let alone an instructor.
  22. In the second matrix move keanu reeves blocks a sword with a knife hand block, but i dont recomend trying that cause it will almost certaintly at least break your hand and unless your bones are realyl realyl strong it will most like go through. Not pleasant.
  23. Shureido has a 6.5 foot bo? Well thats good ot know. I dont need it now but in a couple of years (hopefully i'll remember) i will be a high enough belt rank to start training with a bo and i will probably get that as i am 13 now and 6 feet tall, but i think i'm starting to slow down growing. I kinda like rattan weapons as far as wood ebcause they are average weight but strong and durable towards like water and stain and htat kinda stuff, as long as you get one with the bark/skin still on.
  24. You should try to learn the fan on your own and however you want, but i recomend having a back up plan incase the video or whatever you use is confusing, unless you find a martial arts instructor who can teach you the fan. You should search around in the newspaper for an instructor. I personally think the fan is really cool even though i'm a guy and i hope to one day learn it, but for now i'll focuse on karate. But even if you choose a different weapon, you should still try to learn the fan eventually, its realyl cool. Also, this sounds kinda sadistic, but the best part about it is that even fi you get caught in a fight and are forced to defend yourself and use a fan, it doesnt even count as a weapon in court. Although i hope you dont plan on getting in fights. Well good luck finding a way to learn it.
  25. Yeah, some escrima katas are pretty cool and if you want to make it really flashy (provided your flexible enough) you could use your legs to kick away their hand (just make sure you pick up a single stick video instead of double) and you could add in some kicking. It would probably look pretty cool just so long as you do some cool sword swings.
