How many kicks do you need?
unknownstyle replied to Johnlogic121's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
front side and back are all you really need you can put variations on them to suit your needs from there -
if it was stationary ibn your hand it could have been tekko(knuckle duster okinawan) or spinning spikes

my philososophy of karate is to train constantly, train hard, train smart. protect yourself and the ones around you who cant protect themselves, pass on what you have been taught the way you were taught, dont change it to meet the approval of the public eye. never fight unless it is the last resort. i hope thats what you were looking for
-
its really hard to get someone to train in the old ways. im young but was taught in the old school methods, noe my teacher has started to tone dow the way he teaches and i dont really want to and ive noticed how many students have switched the days that they come so it will fall on a day when he is there. i am very blunt in how i put things and i think alot of people think im kinda mean. they need to learn that i am that way so they can correct those mistakes in a controlled enviroment, instead of on the street where its too late to fix that mistake. i dont understand how alot of school will teach a student to fight when the student has never really been hit. how does this effect them when they are attacked? if i got hit in the ribs real good it doesnt bother me because i have been conditioned in body and mind to overcome the feeling of not being able to breath or vomiting. i think that is one of the major elements thjat is missing in todays school

why is it that so many now days are so worried about losing students that they decide to water down everything that they teach? being a true martial artists i want to pass my art onto people that want to learn it the way it was meant to be taught, people that believe in order to be a black belt it takes more than paying an instructor once a month. as an instructor i would rather have 10 students that wanted to learn karate the way i have been taught. than have 1000 that just want to flash a rank at people.

push ups are a good form of punishment, making them come to class but not able to participate. if they know they are beiong left out because of an action that is inappropriate will encourage them not to want to do it again. if problems like this persist expelling a student or lose of rank may be appropriate.
-
depends on rank, here is a breakdown. white and blue belts are allowed hard contact to the body. no head at all. shin blocks are usually toned down on white belts. green belts are allowed hard contact to the body, medium contact to the head, light contact to the groin and we add sweeps at this point. brown belts are allowed hard body and head contact, medium contact to face and groin. and we add hard leg kicks, takedowns and submission fighting. at blackbelt hard contact applys to everything, with the exception of the joints and throat. we also focus alot on nerve strikes. at black belt level you also dont wear protective gear of any kind. and the only gear you wear at the other ranks is gloves

i practice matsumura seito shorin ryu and the one system itself has both kind of blocks, both of which we use to do damage. the single bone blocks are our shorinji blocks, shorinji stresses alot of power and these blocks cause alot of more external damage mostly to the bone and muscle. then we have matsumura blocks are double bone blocks most of the damage you would cause through using these blocks would be nerve strikes. insides of the arms and legs are prime targets in these blocks. i regularly use both as needed. the reason we have both is to cater to the martial artist at a young age and at an oldage as well. the shorinji more suited towards a younger person who has the strength and power to inflict this kind of damage and still be able to use their arms. the matsumura aim towards the older people who would rather just inhibit their opponents from being able to use their limbs. each style also has its own punches. matsumura use a horizontal fist always angled down to use gravity, hence why it is used by the elderly that cant genarate the same kind of power. the shorinji are vertical fist with a seisan dachi(90 degree stance) so you learn alot of hip movement through this.

thats why you build up to it, by the time you reach your brown belt you should be able to take a full shot to the ribs or mid section and be fine. it is inevitable that you will sustain damage in a conflict so you should prepare for it. i dont care if you are a judan you will still not be able to block everything

its the okinawan hoe

why should you tone down your training? im not saying you walk in the first day and you get beat down this is years into training. you also gain a great deal of body conditioning. it really doesnt matter to me though its how i train and i know most people wouldnt agree with the severity of my training. its that type of mentality that gives people the idea that martial artists are weak and cannot really use what they know.

has anyone ever trained woth this weapon? there are some coo; videos on youtube of a guy using it

Looking for Advice.

muay thai, not only will it get you in shape but of the three is most useful in a confrontation. i dont know a single person that wants a thai boxer to knee them in the head and keep attacking -
i teach my own classes on monday and tuesdays, assist my sensei on thursday, advanced classes friday, and kobudo saturday mornings
-
it reallt depends on wgat you feel comfortable with, im about to do my shodan test and if i were to compete tomorrow i would still use the same kata i have always used, seisan. once you have something you know you can do wothout evening thinking that is the kata to choose if at any time when you are just runnung through kata you get stuck then it probably isnt the one. another good thing would to be have a few people watch your katas you have to choose from and ask them which one they thought looked better or had more power
-
depending on rank it could be light contact or full follow through. if you are a blackbelt under my teacher and we are blocking a strike to the face and you miss the block well guess what you either have a black eye or are on the floor being woke up. what would be the point in doing these excercises if they arent practiced with the intent to follow through. if you train not knowing what it felt like to hit the person during the drill then you may not know what to do since the body of the attacker will probably not be in the same position as you r uke was due to the fact that you never really commited to your strikes
-
i have heard lots of stories about spearhands my favorite being my senseis kosho ryu instructor would talk about thrusting his fingers in between ribs and popping them that way, or the one about his instructor being attacked by a guy and breaking the attackers arm with a shuto uke then shoving his fingers into his eye socket. it really shouldnt take that long to devolpe your fingers we use them regularly in sparring. we do fingertip push ups to devolope them and bang our fingers against stuff to get the nerves used to the sting of striking stuff
-
goju is alittle more hardcore and direct. and i would also like to comment that most people think goju or shorin or whathave you have no grappling and that is a huge misconception. alot of the applicatations you learn from your kata will end with you on top of your opponent on the ground, maybe not submiting but you genarally use alot of joint manipulation in striking arts.

Shodan Test
unknownstyle replied to unknownstyle's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
it will be 14 kata, 3 one steps that have to be done at real speed and if you miss it youll be hit. 2 rounds of sparring full mma rules minus elbows to head and a round of bare knuckles with my teacher -
im about to be a black belt and the only kata i use is seisan and it was the 4th kata i learned out of the 16 i know sometimes less is more. even though you cant really look at seisan as a beginner kata as it is one of the hardest to truly understand
-
getting tested for my shodan on the 14th its not really a long test but extremly brutal. so im praying my knee holds out and i walk away unscaved
-
our shodan test is all 14 kata, 3 self defense that must contain block strike and takedown in that order with no locks, 2 3 min rounds full contact sparring face body and legs along with sweeps/takedowns and groundfighting and one round of bare knuckles fighting no head contact with hands and no groundfighting[similar to kyokushin style fighting]

1st kyu test
unknownstyle replied to unknownstyle's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
it is a blended style of okinawan karate, kempo, bjj, muay thai, and just a bit of the high kicks from tkd. we use traditional mtsumura seito kata and hard full contact sparring -
have you seen katas with them used in the closed position, they are very effective against a sword welding opponent. and they build up your finger good for fingertip strikes
