  1. and thats what i meant really i just didnt say it, because it is a "prettier" art to watch more people do it. hard japanese styles are not really for everyone, tkd is a little more friendly to the students.
  2. congrats, any battle scares from your test?
  3. i know there will be people who hate me for this, but from what i have seen a lot of tkd schools have this similar problem. im not downing tkd as an art because it is effective when taught correctly. but i get tired of seeing 10 year old blackbelts, and seeing tkd blackbelts being beaten to death at tournaments. this is the same with every art but you see it more among tkd because its the one that is most pleasing to the eye, i mean how many of you can actually tell me that you would not like to be able to do some of the hogh flying kicks and such. but the truth is in actual combat they have little to no use. i think if some instructors put the same amount of focus on other aspects of training as they did with things of that nature we would be having a totally different conversation. its just my opinion, not meaning to down anyone or to disrespect anyone here.
  4. I think this brings up an interesting concept. It is easy to see in MMA that each fighter has an individual style. Likewise, Bruce Lee stated the same idea. But, can't we translate this to any style of MA, regardless? I do TKD, a primarily kicking art. I do kick quite a bit, but I don't count it as my strength. I like to get in and punch a lot, and then kick in close as they back away. I don't jump much any more either, but some TKDers do. So, in your style of MA, what "styles" do you see pop up between fellow students and competitors? i totally agree, nobody does the exact same style. even though me and my best friend are blackbelts in the same system we teach very differently and stress different things. so everyone in a sense has their own style of ma
  5. the shorinji i have been taught is force meets force, is what you learn the mainland style or is it okinawan and under what teacher
  6. depemds on rank really, he could be talking about weight transfer, body rotation, or focus and intent. i tell my students when doing a kata or sparring that they have to have intent behind their strikes or they will never be as powerful as they want them to be.
  7. i believe it would be disrespectful not to take an opportunity such as that, most of the time a teacher exposes weak points to see if you notice them and how you go about it, its a basic teaching tool i use all the time.
  8. if one of your instructors really doesnt like you it would be a good idea to maybe start training at the school in the other city. you are in a contact sport, and the possibilities of you getting injured by this person doing something is really high. i know that as an instructor at times you have to put alittle bit of force behind some things to teach someone something, and he could possibly take this too far. i kinda got off on a separate subject but i feel its an important thing to keep in mind.
  9. i was never part of the organization, i would have broken away from my sensei to do so.
  10. thanks very much for the info
  11. i decided to stay, he has no problem with cross training but i wont train with someone that doesnt allow me to stay with my teacher.

  14. i want all imported okinawan kobudo weapons. any weapon listed in the matayoshi syllabus i want.
  15. does anyone know of any good uechi ryu instructors in north texas, looking to start cross training.
  16. no art is better than another, its all about hard training. as far as media dumbing down arts, thats a negative its the practitioners that destroy an arts credibility. because one person waters something down and puts a name on it anyone who doesnt like it will assume that anything with a similar name must be just as bad. so i blame the practitioners and instructors of certain styles for the bad rap they get.
  17. not only is the lesson awesome nut to meet someone that loves the same things is pretty hard. most definitely a lucky fella
  18. i think striking is essential to defeating multiple attackers, why would you grapple or do anything else than strike them
  19. the only reason is that organization in the world that teaches my original style. i would have joined the Kenshin Kan org. but they dont teach the real matsumura seito that i started with.
  20. i would rather have the knife, but if i was fighting someone whom had one of the weapons i would rather them have a gun, knives go where they hands move.
  21. i really dont get any training all i do is teach for him, and no the training is not genuine, at times i am shown things that are made up and are only for sport. i want the tradition that i am not getting from him.
  22. i would like to hear your opinions on my situation. my instructor has created his own system, presently i am the only active dan ranking student and i teach a majority of the classes at our dojo. when i started training under him he taught his base system Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu, i am thinking of joining the organization he broke away from, the only catch to this is the only way they will let me continue in their system is by cutting ties and not training under him at all. my instructor is really ll that i have had to look up to as a positive male role model, he has done alot for me and molded me into the person i am today. is it wrong for me to possibly ruin all of that just so i can continue my training the proper way?
  23. depending what part of the throat is hit determines your outcome. if you hit high in the throat the possibility of crushing the wind pipe is decreased some, hitting low however will kill your attacker. once you strike there is not that can be done for them they will simply suffocate or drowned in their own blood.
  24. awesome, how long have you been training?
  25. hard old school karate woekouts are what i love best
