unknownstyle replied to Belasko's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
if your allowed to sweep, get a partner and practice that so when you have one person coming at you, you can sweep them and cause more time for you to prepare for the other two -

Testing for 6th and 5th kyu
unknownstyle replied to Kieran-Lilith's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
same here, i think the worst is your first test though, since youve never done it you dont know what to expect and you push yourself well beyond the limits, in the higher rank tests ive had a easier time because i was relaxed, the test were harder but when you know what to expect it is a little easier -

i train with makiwara alot when not training in class, as well as work on lots of weapons excercises

i only study one right now because my instructor would like us to at least reach brown belt before cross training, his reasoning is he wants us to be able to weed out the techniques that are unpractial and for us to have a solid foundation to build off

What weapon do you actually carry?
unknownstyle replied to pressureguy's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
my hands are all i need -
my instructor has us put our hands on our hips while doing kicking exercises, two reasons. one is to strengthen our thumbs so our fists are tighter, and two being so we dont rely on our arms for balance during sparring

i tested for 6th kyu in november, and should be testing for 5th later this month

Which Fighting Style use weapons
unknownstyle replied to Morris Ageen's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
why did the one dude say that karate wasn't supposed to have weapons, i know that shorin wasnt just blended with kubudo, the old masters had to learn the weapons in order to defend against the samurai, thats why alot of karate systems dont use katana. because they keep to the roots and the original practitioners weren't aloud the use of swords -
all of my school wears all black my instructors reasoning is because a long time ago he bought a high dollar gi that was all white and completly destroyed it the first day trainig in the grass

Is testing only2xper year normal for lower belts?
unknownstyle replied to rivergirl's topic in Karate
ive tested four time since Febuary, im and im about to test again before the end of January, and it is my instructor has told me to test. its not one of those deals where you pick when you test and pay the fees, we dont pay a thing at my school. only for your equitment, uniforms and belts -

Andy 6th kyu matsumura seito shoir ryu, testing for 5th kyu mid january, and been training since september 2004 -
i agree with killer miller, you have to sweep when it least expected, if you shoot in and catch them off guard and attack the top half if your are fighting a less experienced fighter they will tend to worry more about the attack to the top and when they do that you sweep the leg, or if someone comes in with a sweep and over commits and misses you can come in reall quick and sweep their base leg

What it means to be a Master
unknownstyle replied to DragonMike's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i think to be a true master is about half karate and half helping out in the world. you need to have mastered your skill in your art, as well as being a good person, making wise decisions, and setting a good example for all your students and lower ranks -
how good do you have to be to spar?
unknownstyle replied to moneygqj's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
dude i would spar my instructor anyday of the week, and im 5' 9" and 129lbs. and hes 6' 2" and 310lbs., i know that i won't win but it is a good way to get to use new things so you don't hurt someone else. your instructor will have more control, will probably never just flat out wail on you, and his conditioning will be far suporior to yours so you can try what you want
