  1. Well, that one art you mentioned...whats it called Ken-po? I hear its pretty cool and you should try it... But seriously Sohan made some great points. Make sure you seek out whats in you area and what you have access to! Good Luck
  2. As some of you may have read, I am without teacher right now. I started watching the "On the Mat" series which I posted a link to in the Karate section. I found the guy that teaches in the video and he e-mailed me an offer to learn online through videos streamlined through his website for $20 a month. It would be similar to the series on You tube only longer and in depth(hopefully). He is also going to Webcast live classes. Ive always been weiry of learning online, through videos, or books. I think learning live in class is the better option. But on the other hand $20 is a good deal, and from what ive seen he does a good job teaching. I'd probably be starting from the bottom(probably white belt) but I honestly dont mind as belts arent that important to me. What do you guys think? Should I do it? Would you do it if you didnt have a teacher?
  3. One of the most interesting I found was that he studied fencing. He stayed with Ed Parker for a little while when he first started out, so Im sure there is some American Kenpo influence
  4. Ive seen a lot of topics on "What is Kenpo?" or "What do they do in Kenpo", "how is it different that Shotokan, Goju, etc..." So now people can make there own assumptions.
  5. You should read "Ender's Game" good manual for dangerous schools, or just a good read anyway. If you fight, fight to win and destruy the will to fight. Otherwise you'll fight the same fight over and over again.
  6. Just wanted to get it out there that there is a series on You Tube called "On the Mat", its a kenpo instructional series which does a really good job explaining Kenpo technique and theory I posted a Link below, if it doesnt work just type "Kenpo" and it should pull up. Just thought I'd let you practitioners of Kenpo know what other tools are out there and for the people who have questions about Kenpo Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxk5PJHJKbY
  7. I honestly dont, but Prodigal Son is one of my favorites
  8. wildflower? thanks for the info
  9. Thats why I post here, I also visit Sherdog.com, not nearly the maturity as here
  10. when I was first looking into joining a MA school I was very interested in TKD. The first school I visited was very similar to this GKR school, they were ineffective and very pricey(seriously $900 for 6 month contract) It put a bad taste in my mouth for MA. I went to a few more places until I found the Kempo school I joined and moved up in and had no problems with until recently. Your friend sounds like he needs to shop around. Like it was pointed out earlier, its better you point it out than someone else on the street in a way that hurts. I would take this very seriously as he could get hurt should he start to run his mouth to the wrong people. Im not implying he is that kind of person but Im truly against McDojos that bring a false sense of security to the practitioner. Show him some videos online if he is reluctant to visit somewhere else. You Tube has tons of videos and demos of tons of styles. I hope you get things figured out.
  11. Which subs would this be? Armbars and triangles and kimuras' hurt
  12. Winsor Pilates really is great, it works to keep you lean. Ive read that the original Pilates helps build your muscles more. I could be wrong but I know he wrote a few books. might look them up...
  13. i agree with Bushido_man96 Some people are just not fighters, maybe now that he's been in one he knows what his body will do and maybe can work on his reaction. Maybe some more serious sparring sessions?
  14. great stuff, I also lift wieghts, I also use wrist and ankle weights when I do my forms or shadowbox. I must confess, I started this partly because I wanted some new ideas and im betting someone will get some ideas themselves
  15. I dont think this has been done, but here goes.. Do any of you guys practice other forms of fitness to enhance your skills? For example:Yoga, Aerobics, or any exercises that help you up your game? I ask because I started to do Pilates with my fiance and before I started I kinda scoffed at it, believing it was less difficult than it looks. needless to say I was humbled after only a 30 min workout which I was sweating pretty heavy after Anyway, since then Ive seen more definition in my midsection and I have seen an increase in flexibility and now I recommend to alot of less limber MA to try it out. Ive only been doing it for a month and a half. ANybody have a similar experience? or something to suggests for this community? Just thought I'd start up something new!
  16. If it works use it
  17. Striking is NOT what he does best... he was one of the best wrestlers in the country... his grappling is what makes his striking so good. Think about it - if he couldn't defend the takedowns or was not good at getting back to his feet, how well would he be able to use his strikes? I disagree, while he is a great wrestler, striking IS what he does best. If his wrestling was better than his striking he would probably be wrestling at an Olympic or Pan Am level(i.e. Randy Couture). Now it is his choice to not compete at this level but he is a better striker than he is a wrestler and Couture proved that in there first meeting. I know he beat Randy in the next 2 match-ups but 90% of those fights outcomes are from Chucks lateral movements.
  18. Its better to say that Fedor can ground and pound as opposed to labeling him with that style. While it is true that this is probably what hes most recognized for, you cant overlook the fact that he dominated the standup in a world class K-1 level kickboxer in Mirko Cro Cop, pulled off the most beautiful armbar I've ever seen against Mark Coleman, and put on a clinch/takedown clinic with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He has it all. I agree, but Fedor's specialty is the GnP. he can do it all but he prefers to pound people into the mat
  19. When I started sparring it was an assistant instructor that was about my size. He took it pretty easy on me as I was a pretty sloppy fighter. I think working with soemone of a higher rank that knows what he's doing is OK but in your situation your goin too fast, hit the bag and do some light sparring with a different partner
  20. I always thought Rich Franklin was a sprawl-and-brawl guy, I know he favors the stand-up. Fedor is a ground-and-pounder(probably the best in the world) similar to Matt Hughes or Tito Ortiz without the elbows(Pride does not allow elbows)
  21. Which season are you refering to? Because season 4 just started and its middleweights and welterwieghts... best season yet IMO BTW
  22. I really dont think the Chuck/Wandy fights gonna happen. I think money issues will always get in the way. If Pride takes off in the states we would have a better chance of seeing this fight happen. IMHO Chuck beating Babalu was the upset of the year and only built Chuck up more than ever. Griffen or Tito cant touch Liddell right now. Griffen/Babalu would be a good fight as would Tito/Babalu(which is what I really want to see) would also be a good fight. In the Griffen/Tito fight I went back and watched it and it was really close but I give a SLIGHT edge to Tito. if they fight again I would bet on Forrest taking the fight. Tito just hasnt shown improvement since he lost to Couture.
  23. Just thought I would let all the Kempo fighters and otherwise who missed the fight Liddell retained his title! Congrats Chuck Liddell for a great fight against tough BJJ fighter Renato Sobral!
  24. Its always better learning from an instructor, because they can point things out that maybe you arent doing. On the other hand Evan Tanner first learned BJJ from Gracie tapes and went on to become a champion. Obviously, he has training afterwards but if it helps you get started then I would rule it out. Just pay VERY close attention and be VERY careful
