  1. take some light weights like 1lbs to 5lbs DB. I don't know what you can use. But anyhow hold your arms out and take them in circles. Try and do like sets of 50 forward and backward. Do lateral raises, front raises with DB's as well. Again as much as you can stand. Do like 3 sets of 10 with each. Only other thing I would sugest trying is Rope Tricep Ext. Take a rope and hook it up to a smith machine or a machine with weights and a pulley. Anyhow extend the rope out like you are throwing a football. Good luck....
  2. O BTW We do not do point sparring. I think it is useless for SD and I do not teach it. I a student of mine wants to enter a point system fight. I will work with him on the side but I do not teach point sparring in class. It builds false hopes and impressions IMO.... But thats another post. LOL
  3. I take all my mid to upper ranks and put them on one side of the room. I take my new kids and put them on the other. Match it up so each beginner is always with an advanced student or me. When it is beginner and advanced the advanced student will play D always. Only attacking with locks and throws to teach lessons. The advanced students will throw slow front kicks or slow roundhouse hook punches to let the new studnet practice seeing the attack and working off it to a counter. We do that for 10 mins or so. Then we change. Now myself and my higer studnets will take 2 white belts and work with them one one one. Doing the same thing but adding a bit more speed and attacks. Durring this time the advanced students are matched up with each other and are free to spar at will. This lasts as long as I wish it to. The last part we do. We will set everyone down. Our top ranked studnest will spar a few mins in fromt of class 2 at a time. Sometimes I will get in this as well. Just depends on class size and time. Then we will take one student who has exp aginst 2 students who are new. May get up to one on three if we are lucky. The class really enjoys that part. That is just the method we use. The first part allows the advanced kids to get loose and teach a little. The middle part lets the advanced work hard with people their own leval and lets me check the new kids. Then the final parts lets the advanced members show there stuff while the young guys get to see what it should look like and pick up a few moves.
  4. Leaf I do agree with what you say but I do wear pads. More so for the other persons protection than my own. Although I let it slide a lot I do tell everyone to bring a mouthpiece.
  5. I think that is more so up to the teacher today. You would be nuts not to wear pads IMO. LOL.....
  6. Thats simple. It's ICE HOCKEY a mix of Boxing and Bo arts. Very fast and has much more contact than TKD or Judo. LOL. We maybe not Olympic Hockey but you know what Im saying. LOL. This was ment as a joke BTW.......
  7. I assume you mean tough. Some just have a good jaw and others don't. LOL. It has a lot to do with your mental state but at the same time you can't train for pain or loss of oxygen. LOL.
  8. Yeah we teach to jab the back elbow sort of like throwing an elbow attack behind us. Keep the arms tight on the spin for protection.
  9. One thing I need to add. This is another reason everyone must be knowlegable about using chokes. Again I don't care how big they are if they can't get air they can't fight. Someone posted about watching the first move and shifting and attacking. Again this IMO is not ture no more than it is true of a small guy. Yeah some people you can judge but it has nothing to do with size. I am 6'1 315. I used to play OL in football I got really good footwork. Short quick steps that allow me to move and change direction and keep balance. Again too many times people think well big men are slow or big men can't move. That is false. It may be more ture but it is not always ture. Attack low and used chokes and PP atacks. I don't care if the guys is 135 or 400 it will always work.
  10. We do 3 classes a week. The classes are 2hrs long and usually run 6-8. If we do kids classes or womens SD its only an 1 hr class.
  11. Leaf its that old double standard. LOL.... Women want to join all boys schools like the Citidal but we can't join their clubs. LOL.... You will learn that all minorites want the benifits of things like Title IX and equal protection laws but they don't want to give it to others. The old Constutional argument between Jefferson and Hamilton. The party in power don't want to change the rules. The one out of power does. LOL.....
  12. I know it is taught in 2 forms now. 1. As a dance only..... 2. As a Martial Art...... I don't know much about it but Im sure you are in for a lot of work.
  13. MA is not church but it has a spiritual side to it. MA is tied to religon IMO. Most tend to think of Buddasim but Christianity has many of the same ideas Buddaism has. Such as love thy neighbor and turn the other cheek. Both are key aspects to each religon and MA. Some scholars even speculate that Buddaism was a forerunner of Christianity. Reguardless what your belief is, their is no doubt when you do something with a high moral postion offered by any religon you will become better at it. O Yeah though Jesus Christ all things are possible.
  14. Welcome Joey.
  15. Being the big guy maybe I can help.... You got to take our legs out. I hear speed this and speed that. My hands are as fast as anyones. Im not blowing my own horn but big don't mean slow. In fact most big guys I know have really quick hands because it is eaiser for us to work them on our onw than to work kicks. To slow a big guy you got to take our his wheels. A few low kicks. Remember he has more weight on his legs and if the leg is weak it will be hard for him to stand. Simple math 300 is more than 150. The old saying about the bigger they are the harder they fall is true. I am 6'1 315. My lil brother is 6'7 and 295. This is the only way I can attack him. I am faster than he is but when we spar I have to take out his wheels. I don't find many people bigger than me but he and another student I had 6'5 300 taught me this.
  16. I hate high kicks but I will agree with the statement made by Martial_Artist. To often people take the approach why do I need to do this or that I will never use it. I hear it everyday in football practice. LOL.... IMO high kicks are completely useless in SD but they are a part of MA. So practice them and understand them. Like he said that don't mean you have to use them.
  17. Well with football season in it has to be late for me. We play on Friday nights so thats out. My brother has college games on Saturday's so thats not good for me either. I tell you what. Set it so everyone else is happy and Ill be their as much as I can. Sunday evening is the only good time for me. 5pm-12pm EST
  18. All I can say is what took you so long? LOL Better late than never. Glad to have you here....
  19. Hello. I have read a lot of your old posts. Welcome back.
  20. It really all depends on your style and more so your teacher. We do 3 months and 30 2hr classes. In other words you got to have 3 months time in class and you have to be signed in to 30 classes. With that said we not I. We meaing people I have trained with under my sensei have jumped rank. Double promoted if you will. This happens most of the time when someone comes in from another art and has exp.
  21. Hello This section of the site is used to let everyone know a bit about you. What style you study and other MA stuff. Enjoy.....
  22. Welcome Ryan
  23. Big thing is to be yourself. Do not get on a power trip. Relate to their problems with your own. Don't try and be a boss. Realize that older students will have trouble taking instruction for a teen. Be friendly and just be yourself.
