If it was real the US military would spend millions on it instead of F-35 fighters. In the UFC some old man would dominate and KO everyone at the bell. Heck I thought Luke Skywalker could do this then the Last Jedi came out. So not event in Hollywood. I have no respect for people who allow others to get hurt teaching these Jedi mind tricks as reality.

The Karate Kid took the name Miyagi from the founder of Goju Ryu Gichin Funkoshi created Shotokan from many years of study in both Goju Ryu and Shoin Ryu. Goju Ryu is a very hard style. They do a lot of body conditioning type of exercises and techniques from my understanding. As a Shotokan guy I always tell my students that Funkoshi took the hard from Goju Ryu and th soft from Shoin Ryu. Along with many other things from Master Kano and Judo I have not done any TSD but I have heard the comparison to Shotokan. With all do respect I have not seen it. (Other than a copy of the kata) Some of the Mcdojo Shotokan guys maybe. I am FSKA by way of JKA Shotokan and we take great pride in our power and explosion vs other styles. That combo comes to us though the yin and yang of Goju and Shoin Ryu IMO

When my students reach 3rd Kyu, I allow and/or require them to start teaching our beginner classes. Some will teach the regular class based on ability. Our rule was always you could open your own dojo at 2nd Dan. (With our blessing) Only because we recingnize, 2nd Dan and the teaching rank. For us 1st Dan is much more of a physical achievement, in opposition to the mental aspect of Nidan. Short answer: if people are going to give you money and your teaching is not going to get people hurt then teach. Long answer: talk to your teacher and start teaching beginner classes at all ages because teaching and knowing are two completely different beasts. My suggest is to teacher under Someone. Let them guide you on tips and tricks not to mention the entire business end of teaching: cost, time, insurance, livability, parents, rent, equipment, etc etc etc. I taught at 2nd Dan for 20 years and just recently made 3rd. The rank is secondary to the expieremce. I am also a high school teacher and coach so Teaching was something I've been professionally trained for as well. Good luck

Master Ken is the best. I can watch it for hours. -
Truth is the older you get the harder all jumps become. Although we should always strive to perform them there is a lot of truth in adjusting them accordingly. Understanding the jump IMO is more important ant than doing the jump. This does not mean I don't practice it but when I do kata , I'm very careful about risking my body trying to do a jump that I didn't think twice about 20 years ago. I don't think the answer to your question is a weight lifting answe. It's a fear solution. Once you know you can get around the jump becomes much simpler. So my suggestion work on a trampoline or jumping in a pool under water. Then progress up to using a spring floor like you see cheerleaders tumble on. After that advance to matts or grass or a softer surface. No shame in wearing shin pads or shoes either. Good luck but the jump don't make you a good martial artist the training makes you one. You may never get it but that don't mean you should not study it and understand it or ignore it because physically it can't be done.

Should you aim to be better than your teacher?

Practical weapons practice for self defence
G95champ replied to OneKickWonder's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Shotokan has no weapons but (we) our dojo plays with what we call practical weapons. The Bo or Jo staff IMO is the most logical. Items like a rake, shovel, mop, pool cue, ski pole, broom, yard stick, cane, umbrella, or broken tree branch all simply relate to staff techniques. I will add we do not spin or twirl them like you would see in competition kata. We strike, poke, swing, slash amd block with them. UWhip techniques would be the next most logical IMO. No one has a whip but like the poster stated above you can use a belt, towel, dog leash, purse, lanyard with keys, jacket, shoes, items of clothing, backpack, and earphones. The slashing motion can create great space and the ability to block and wrap makes controlling techniques very safe especially against a bladed weapon. Finally any item you can hold in your hand to inflict damage. We teach this a lot in our women's self defense class. Keys, loose change, hair brush, comb, iPod, cell phone, rings, school books, pen, pencil, cup, can, bottle or any eating silverware. Spoon, fork, etc. you could use knife type of tactics in teaching this but we just use our basic strikes and teach you how best to hold the object to not damage your hand while striking the attacker. If you see a guy carrying a katana on his back or a set of numchhuck on his hip they prob got some issues so stay away lol. Although I love the sword but its use on the street today is a waste of time, barring the zombie apocalypse starts. -
Shotokan has a lot of judo throws in it, as Gichin Funakoshi worked closely with Kano the founder of Judo. So I'm sure you will get a lot of the judo takedowns. Depending on your instructor you may get a little ground work later on. I have trained with some high level akkido guys and I am by no means an expert at akkido but I can see a lot of what they do in the Shotokan kata and applications So IMO the three are a good marriage of styles

Testing for 9th Degree
G95champ replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
A demo for a test. I do understand that most Dan ranks above 7 or so are mostly honorary but using a demo as an "exam" takes away from the idea of an exam. With the drummers and dance this was designed as a show to celebrate this mans life achievements which is fine but it was not a challenge that tested his skill, knowledge, reaction, interpurtation, expression and development of understanding . So I'll SMH lol -
Has anyone used a treadmill in a spa or swimming pool? I was looking at adding one to our dojo, I think it would be very benifical to my seniors who take the class for exercise. Likewise for me after class. Lol Any thoughts on how well they work?

Anytime you limit a weapon with a rule that one person has been accustom to using the other guy gains a huge advantage Put the Grcies in a boxing ring? Put a point fighter in the K1? Put a kata champion in the UFC? Rules change the game. Question is do you only focus on one aspect and get really good at that given style or do you try and gain a general understanding of everything knowing you'll never master it all?

WOW ten years ago I posted my top 5 favorite kata and none of them are there today. That's such a cool thing to see. Espically since I included. Brief reason why. So for the sake of posterity I'll update my list. 1. Meikyo 2. Kanku Sho 3. Gojushisho Sho 4. Gankanku 5. Wankan

Attention Deficit Disorder
G95champ replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Most ADD students struggle with being still and listening not being active. Being a school teacher and coach at the high school level, this is simple. I've NEVER had a football or basketball player say,"coach I can't play because I have ADD" but they will say, ,I can't do this assignment ". in the classroom You never heard of ADD 30 years ago. IMO it's extremely over rated and abused by kids and overprotective parents who know they can get out of classroom work by playing the SPED card. Right now I have 2 kids with autism in my dojo. Both do fine Here is the secret teaching technique the best answer for ADD is a punch in the face. I don't mean that in a bad way but karate has a way of teaching you to pay attention just like mom and dad used to do with a belt and teachers used to do with a paddle. Testing hypothetical
G95champ replied to The Pred's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
We do testing on a student by student basis. If I can get several students ready to test on a given date great but my rules is simple. 1. You must have attended at least 30 classes (90 mins) over a 3 month period to be eligible to test. However, I will give you permission to test this has two major results one I don't have to fail many students because I have to approve them. If they demand to test but I don't think their ready well, it's a great time to prove a point lol. The second result is students who want to advance attend more often and train harder because their testing for me every class. -
Assuming two people physically built the same do two different kata with no mistakes, strong stances, hips, focus, and spirit: the the kata thiught to be more difficult should score higher. Thus a kata like Unsu is hard to beat because it has jumps, drops, quick shifts, balance, change of direction, power techniques, quick techniques and very original techniques. On top of all that it's a long kata. Many smaller people may preform a kata like Empi, Ganganku or Nijushisho at high level competitions. While larger people tend to use Sochin, Jion, and Gojushisho Sho and Dai. IMO those are the kata most commonly seen at the highest competitions. Now Empi and Jion are normally lower black belt kata but they may match the performers body style better. Likewise they may have trained Empi or Jion for 10-20 years but only done one of the higher kata for 4-5 so naturally the one you have done longer should be better. IMO Kanku Sho is a great tournament kata, IDK why is not used more often. I am a large man (6'1 315lbs) and I use Kanku Sho anytime a small faster opponent does a good kata with a jump. Point being, I try to show as many skills at the highest leval possible. I love Ganganku however, I do not balance well. Thus I'll never do it in competition despite th fact it is one of my favorites. Furthermore if I think the competition is weaker or I have not trained like normal I may use Hangetsu or Jittie because I can overplay my size and strength and make those kata look very strong. So simple answer pick the kata you do the best that presents as many different aspects of your skill set. You will always have 2-3 fall back kata that you feel very comfortable with that you can do as a breaker or if you feel bad. Point being don't try a high kata that you can't do well. The name of the kata is second to the presentation. The question comes when a Unsu done with a few mistakes or sloppy techniques beats a Jittie done perfect. That's a big debate lol

Many styles share many of the kata, because Shotokan took it from them. So the kata is not better however, I do think the traditional Shotokan dojo preforms those said kata with much more dymanic movements. With a real understanding for fast vs slow, strong vs soft, high vs low, sharp vs smooth, etc etc etc
-
IMO shotokan leads very well into other styles but that does not make the opposite true. Us, Shotokan traditionalist are very grounded in the ideas of being simple and I've discovered that creates a lot of fustration for people with other backgrounds to step in. However Shihan Kenneth Funakoshi did Judo and Kempo for years before starting and becoming one of the formost Shotokan experts in the world. Question becomes can you teacher explain it and are you willing to make that adjustment?
-
I have watched many of his videos and spoken to him via Facebook. I absolutely love his approach. Many things he is teaching are many things I have taught and experimented with for years. I was impressed to see someone actually making the same connections with traditional karate. IMO Mr. Horton is very legit, the extremely loud pop you hear IMO is because of the mic for the video. However there is no doubt he is very fast and explosive.

Why most people retire at shodan?
G95champ replied to Lachrymosa's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree I think a lot of people view it as a end and not the beginning. I also think you are right that many people go to college, get a job, start a family etc and jsut have no time to train like they did as a teen. One other thing that I will add is a lot of teachers don't know what to teach after black belt. Thus those looking to learn something new can not because the one who had been teaching them is maxed out. This is not necessarly the head Sensei but those under him.
