A new martial artist's first question
Menjo replied to KaratePballer54's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes it did, i have faster reflexes but mostly i am more aware of things that go around me so i tend to appear react alot faster even though i knew it was coming. Its like when i spar with my sensai, no matter how fast i go theres no way i can ever get in. Thats because he knows what i am going to do it and knows everything iam going to do and how iam going to do it in the first place. -
o ok, well I type with two fingers too! Its kind wierd i pretty much ended up a student but i didnt train the way they did, its weird. I would go there on certain days and spar with the people there and it became a regular thing. Then he showed me some pointers to help me out, and eventually even though we trained in too completely different stlyes he was teaching me! (except i didnt have to pay like everyone else , becuase i wasnt techniqlyu a student). So yea the muay thai instructor helped me out and showed me alot of tactics agaisnt grapplers which is very important... Have you ever faught in a MMA event or sparred with anyone before in MMA?
-
Its wierd how you forgot your training from another stlye when you were a black belt,

r u better at patterns or sparring?
Menjo replied to Jane_Doe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yea i agree however having a sensai help you with sparring usually makes a difference. -

fending of an animal
Menjo replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ha some really good advice here, however the saying i like the most is when in one of the posts it said "nor especially one that is trained in weird war rituals (katas)." lol -
Yea thats a really good point, i took some muay thai training for a year and a half and it gave me an edge of experiance of combat over other karateka in kumite so trying new things out almost never hurts.
-
I think that was better put, your sensai sounds like he has some interesting things to say.

Question about those self defense classes...
Menjo replied to Menjo's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
ok thanks for moving it anyway, but yea i wonder if those classes really work. Im guessing some do and some dont because it depends on the instructor, but without training the techniques into their mind constantly will the people be able to use the techniques effectivly in the heat of the moment? -
There is no "best" way only the way you do it. But there certainly are better ways of conditioning. In the martial art sense i think its generaly accepted that muay thai has the most enduring and brutal conditioning today. Look around the net about conditioning and youll find many many ways and tips and techniques good and not so good ways of conditioning. Maybe ask your instructor(you never know), some stlyes use different methods such as iron fist or karateka using makiwara. Its all up to, however its also up to you to make a wise choice because it is your body, and you will have to deal with what you did for the rest of your life. However for some basic answers, if you want to condition your knuckles use a makiwara, or hit a heavy bag and maybe knuckle push-ups if your up to it, just dont over do it because you can damage the nerves and bone without proper care and training like everything else. For condiioning food is a important factor, look on the net and i dont recommend getting any pills i really DONT recommend anything like that at all. Look around for healthy food facts and stuff, and go swimming and basic stuff like that. The problem with conditioning is that there is so much to it, because you can have a novel on different techniques for exercising your leg, so concentrete on parts of your body on certain days, pretty much again like i always say go around on the net or ask your instructor, chances are he has some exercises he does himself.

What martial arts use the bo? the tonfa? the sai? I was just curious. Also what weapon do think you think is most effective in the modern times and in the past? Also what martial art do you think uses these weapons most effectivly in general for populartity and another for actual combat situations?

I would go with the bo, its really cool i wish i had a chance to train with one,

Question about those self defense classes...
Menjo replied to Menjo's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
ok thats a good point thats all i wanted to know My understanding was that people choose these classes over martial arts becuase they thought it was more effective, however i see why now. -
well yes, however i thought he meant "thats all you need" by thats all he needed.... not thats all there is....??
-
ouch, but i see what you mean now thanks for clearing that up.
-
lol (" couse on many ocasions i have been attacked with knives in fights"). you made pretty light news about the whole knife thing aswell, you dont need weapon training for defense agaisnt weapons because shotokan without weapons has already tooken care of that, but my main advice for you is too avoid these attacks in the first place, being a shodan yourself you should know that above myself.
-
Yes but i think its a very generalized survey, unless there were to put hundreds and hundreds of stlyes. so that way is a little more convienent... I think TKD is most used.
-
Yea "the more you know, the more you know you dont know". lol
-
hmm i havnt heard of a shotokan school that uses weapons

Martiol Arts outlawed in the US?
Menjo replied to mantis99's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Muay thai is not outlawed in the US for sure, however some martial arts are outlawed in some areas such as Ninjitsu in some areas such as Nova scotia, i dont think drunken boxing is but i wouldnt be surprised if it was. -
My favorite kata to preform is Bassai Dai, i havnt learned Nijushio due to kyu level, but it is my favorite kata to watch.

Question about those self defense classes...
Menjo posted a topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My Main question is why do people take those classes and whats the logic to it? My guess is that they are unconfidnce to preform martial arts? or they think that it doesnt work? Can anyone explain the logic to it? Also martial arts is much more effective( i think) since it is a way of life and a thousand other reasons so why not take martial arts i just dont get it.
