The reason we train wrist grabs...
ravenzoom replied to traz's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Right, however I find this fight pathetic and quite frustrating. True, I wasn't there to witness what lead to the fight, but from the video it is clear that the guy who gets beat up had no intention of starting any physical confrontation. I have no problem with two guys who want to go at it, but when I see a person picking on someone who obviously doesn't want to fight I consider this to be a very cowardly act. -
Well I agree with everything you say except about how alcohol should be abolished from the world. Not everyone drives drunk or acts stupid while drinking. Yes some do, and that's sad, but many others, like myself, can enjoy a drink or two and take it easy during that period

BJJ vs Judo
ravenzoom replied to b3n's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Perhaps, but in the original question it was asked between the two styles taken alone. Not whatever has been added by a dojo. A Wing Chun dojo might mix Wing Chun with Sambo to make it a more complete style. What the original post was aiming for was between two seperate styles, not what each individual dojo has incorpotated in its curriculum. However, because of recent MMA events many BJJ dojos have incorporated all kinds of different moves from different martial arts to do better on the MMA scene, but this is not what authentic (like Royce Gracie used to practice in early UFCs to do) BJJ was like. -
Where the hell do you come from in Ontario to have so many fights!!! When I read I thought you vame from Philly or something! This being said I agree with you entirely, it really depends on the situation. You could be in an open field while fighting someone one on one, or you could be in a crowded metro station where someone just jumps you with his friends behind, etc. So to say that one MA is the best in every situation is wrong. Some might be more effective in certain situations but not in others.

IGM wrote: If a TKD guy can beat a BJJ guy or vice-versa, you can claim he fought "both hard & smart enough and he was aware of his target weakness while defending his own", but the reason why you called him TKD or BJJ guy is because of his style of fighting. Therefore, the style the guy used must be an important factor in fighting and winning or losing. Whether it is the most important factor among many factors is another question and more difficult to answer. I agree with your post. But like i mentioned earlier, styles also do need to be taken into consideration.

DKizzle wrote: The way some people seem to talk it's as if you'll be attacked 100 times a year. Fact is, unless you live in the worst neighbourhoods in the world many will never face a threatning confrontation ever and even less a life or death situation. So those who put the red light on enjoyable things (no matter what those things are) in life for fear of such a situation to happen might miss some fun moments. If you choose not to drink, great for you, but I hope the reason is a more valid one than the one of being on guard all the time with 100% of your reflexes ready for action. You guys will die from stress!! You should learn to relax a bit.

My favourite is definately Christmas. I love the decorations, the music, the atmosphere, the days off, the spirit, the magic etc. that christmas brings. Plus I very often go to Florida during that time (like these year!!). Second is Haloween. Although I'm 25, I love decorating the house and seeing little kids come up with costumes for candy, it's so nice to see. I also enjoy the decorations a lot and the atmosphere of Halloween (especially for the boring fall season). Lastly it has to be my birthday dec. 7th which also adds to the Christmas season since it's so close. Just thinking about it and I can't wait!!!!!

At first I said what the hell, but now I understand what you mean actually. For me however, it's hockey, playing it on the ice, and watching my favourinte team, the Montreal Canadiens on TV. I very rarely miss any and if I do I really don't like it (crazy?). This did (and sometimes still does) bring some heated discussions with my girlfriend at first, but now she respects my love of hockey (although she still doesn't like it much she does watch it with me sometimes and we even bet on games). I have been with her for over a year now and everything is going well, but I believe i was lucky there was no hockey last year because she would surely have dumped me right there. So you should be careful with new dates since they may think you like more MA (or whatever) more than her so she'll look elsewhere. Just try to doze things off.

There was one in my local pet shop not long ago, very cute dog when it's a baby. Never seen one as adult thought, except in pictures. Wanted to buy it, but I have a fox terrier, so when I learned they are also fighters I decided not too.

karva maga & Judo
ravenzoom replied to RedRaven's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
You're extremely lucky if you can combine both, I'd love to have that chance. This is what I would really like to to do. Judo as foundation plus Krav Maga for striking and different self defense principles. -
White Warlock wrote: I believe you are greatly exagerating. To say that most of the smaller guys beat the bigger guys is pushing it. It was mostly a style vs. style difference. Gracie won, not because he was small, but because his style (almost unknown at the time) dominated the scene. Tank Abbott lost often(bigger guy) because he had no style really, he just slugged it out and relied on his strength and toughness. At equal ability and technique I would always give the bigger guy a better chance of winning the fight.

Bolo Yeung?
ravenzoom replied to SatyagrahaKF's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I've seen him in a few obscure movies and his martial arts seemed pretty good to me. -
No gi Judo
ravenzoom replied to Zapatista's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Chances for you to find a Judo dojo that uses no gi are very slim. However, don't believe because you practice Judo with a gi that you can't use it against somebody on the street who's only wearing a t-shirt -
Shotochick wrote: Ha! This made me laugh!! I love beer (maybe because I'm Canadian!), all sorts of beer, you could even say I'm somewhat of a beer connoiseur. I like drinking during the weekend while watching a movie or watching a hockey game. I rarely get drunk - I am pretty tolerent to alcohol, but I just love the taste and the feeling of relaxation and comfort you get after a few drinks. For example, tonight the NHL season begins, and I can't wait to take that first sip of beer on the first face-off. Remember, drinking doesn't always mean being drunk. Just taking a few during a hockey or football game can be very enjoyable. People seem to have this preconceived idea that if you take a drink you are automatically going to get drunk, this is not my case. Plus, sometimes at the end of a hard long day at work, it's also fun to take a small glass of whiskey on the rocks or some Southern Comfort just to relax a bit. You won't get liver cancer by taking a few drinks a week that's for sure - some drink heavily all their life without getting anything. That being said, I respect those who decide to not drink at all, but those same people should also respect those who like to drink.

I wonder why people still believe style does not matter? If style didn't matter one bit, why the hell practice any martial art? Just condition yourself to slugging it out with your opponent.

I believe you are seriously underestimating Judo as a self defense martial art. Yes it is sports-based, but so is Muay Thai, so is boxing, so is wrestling, etc. and they are all effective for the street as is Judo. When making your choice don't cross out sports based martial arts because you believe they are innefective for self defense, that would be a huge mistake from your part.
