  1. Yes, but he wants a physical martial art. In this case I would choose Muay Thai. It's effective, plus it's very physically demanding.
  2. Ok, but there are different types of TKD. Some are for self-defense, other for the olympics, etc. You try to know.
  3. Well Muay Thai is obviously better for self-defense, not that TKD isn't though. The problem is that the training will surely be hardcore. Are you ready for that? If not, try the TKD class and maybe change to Muay Thai when you feel you're ready, or just stick to TKD if you like it. What type of TKD is it by the way?
  4. Do you think it's good for self-defense from what you've heard of it?
  5. Actually Wing Chun would probable be the best style in this type of confrontation.
  6. So nobody knows anything about this style?
  7. From what I've read Jackie Chan is a bit more than wushu. I also heard he studied Pac Mei as well as other Kung Fu styles.
  8. Well this quote: really makes me think of Wing Chun. Quick and to the point.
  9. I never see anything written about Yoseikan Karate. Does anyone here practice it and can explain what it is? Is it street effective? For those who don't know about the style you can briefly read about it here: http://www.lyon-karate.com/list_martial_arts.php Thanks in advance for your output.
  10. Nice to hear. I would surely like to see him fight. MMa is getting boring for me since it seems every fighter fights the same way (or close to). It's always the same martial arts in general that we see. I would like to see more martial arts win in those competitions.
  11. Great post subgrappler, I think you cannot have a better explanation to your question. Got to both clubs and see how they do things. Only then will you know which one you prefer.
  12. I'd say join BJJ. It will be good for your cardio plus it will be great for self defense. However, if you really seek a stand-up art and you love the kicks in TKD well join it. You should practice what you like.
  13. For self-defense Wing Chun could be good. However it's not very strong on the cardio thing. However it's good to tone up your muscles, especially your back and your legs. I don't know about Chinese Kenpo, but if they do retain that chinese heritage you seek and they do work hard in getting into shape, it might be a better choice. Anyways good luck in your choice!!
  14. Nice, but I wonder how this martial art (whatever it is) would fare in a real street confrontation. What do you think?
  15. This guy is simply crazy. I would like to know how this country (which country?) is politically. I'm sure teachewrs have the right to beat students, perhaps this is still part of their mentality.
  16. Good post, I agree with you. There are many variables involved
  17. Great reply, it's only realistic to base your self-defense against one opponent. I'm not saying someone cannot beat two or even three guy if he's very strong and very lucky, but chances are you're gonna get pounded if any of the two or three know anything about giving a punch
  18. Your dewscription makes me think of muay Thai (punches, kicks, elbows, knees) I think Muay Thai is what you're searching for.
  19. Subgrappler is right, try to see the advantages you can seek out of it.
  20. Well if you're looking self-defense-wise, Kenpo should be a better choice.
  21. If the dojo seems good, as well as the instructor, I'd go with Kempo. It's a fairly well rounded martial art and you should get enough exercise in it to get in shape.
