  1. First time I've seen this. I am very dissapointed with the mythical 'old chinese masters'. If this is what they all looked like maybe it is true that Kung Fu isn't that good. I sure hope I am mistaken, but I must admit that this video came as a shock to me. I'm sure there are better fighters out there. Although the Emin Boztep/Cheung fight didn't look all too good either. Without mentioning the poor results kung fu fighters have got in the ring. Let's face it, we rarely see any footage where a kung fu practitioner shows good fighting skill. All that being said I did do Wing Chun for 2 months and I am sure something good can come out of it. Anyways, I hope...
  2. Up in Canada if you don't participate in any tournaments it should take up to about 8 years. Shorter if you earn points in tournaments. I'm pretty sure it must be like that elsewhere also. Four years to reach brown belt, and another four to reach black belt. Hope that helps
  3. I'd take Muai Thai/kickboxing for punching and kicking, Japanese Jiu Jitsu for pure self defense and take downs (knives, 2 vs 1 etc.), and BJJ for ground grapple if I'd ever get there. I think I would be a pretty well rounded fighter. I'd have good striking, good self defense against intangibles and takedowns, as well as good ground grapple.
  4. There are many different techniques to get out of a tight wrist grab. I'M sure you can find some on the net.
  5. My sensei spoke to me about this today. He said, if someone tries to kill you it's better doing 6 years in jail than laying 6 feet deep in a coffin. When I think about it, I agree. The judge might say you went too far in self-defense, but it's hard to tell when you fighting for your life.
  6. I saw the fight. De La Hoya was attacking most of the time and did innitiate contact. Mayweather fought a very cautious and (I might add) boring fight never using more than one or two punches at a time. I agree with Mayweather's father, Oscar should have won because he's the one who went forward all the time and tried something. p.s. I did win $ 20 on a bet!
  7. I was also surprised at how the fight turned out. Georges is a way better striker than Serra, so that stunned me. Also, it seemed it all started with that left hook which barely grazed the back of his head (from what I can recall). I'm very surprised that this could happen. I also think he wasn't aggressive enough at the beginning of the fight, letting Serra take the center of the ring. Overall, very dissapointing fight for Georges, but I'm sure he will bounce back. Randy Couture said this was the biggest upset ever in UFC history. I don't know if this is the case, but nobody wants to be pinned as the biggest upset ever. Get back up Georges and charge like a bull!
  8. Here is what it says about Can-Ryu on the website: Professor Georges Sylvain founded the Can-Ryu System of Jiu-Jitsu in December 1963. The system was born out of military unarmed combat training and later on was combined with techniques drawn from several Martial Arts, standard police training methods and Western boxing. Further information on the evolution of Can-Ryu and Can-Ryu 2000 Systems of Jiu-Jitsu is fully explained in Professor Sylvain’s latest book titled “Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu 2000, a 50 year journey into the study and evolution of self-protection techniques and tactics”. My sensei also mentioned to me that there is also a portion of the training which is dedicated to high stress situations so that once in such a situation we will be able to use our 'gross motor skills'. According to him there are gross motor skills and fine motor skills. The latter is extremely difficult to use in a real street confrontation, while the former if trained properly should become natural. Anyhow, I don't know much about Traditional Jiu-Jitsu, so my take on it is that the Can-Ryu additions to JJJ are taken from personal experiences from Mr. Sylvan from the army, police officer, boxing, and other martial arts. That's the best I can say as of now. To answer psi I can't be sure but from what I know Mr. Sylvan did a lot of competition in his day and seemed pretty involved in Jiu- Jitsu so my guess would be it could be very possible that you met him at a competition. Thanks for your input by the way guys!
  9. I went to 4 classes up to now with my brother and we love it! It's really not the same when you have a private class with the sensei. It is very self-defence oriented. It's based from 85% Japanese Jiu Jitsu and the other 15% is where the Can Ryu comes in. It's more street wise self defence with some influences from western boxing and kickboxing. It is very entertaining up to now and we intend on continuing on. Anyone has any comments on Can-Ryu Jiu Jitsu or on the site itself? Thanks for your responses.
  10. I like the idea of a MA bachelor degree. I wonder if this will ever come to Canada. Doesn't really matter however since I'd be too old. But getting back on the subject, I think it could be good. However, the job opportunities are not endless I guess. I am not aware of their curriculum but I hope this BA is not only to open a martial arts dojo because it could be hard too value the worth of this bachelor to the parents who pay for their child's tuitition fees. Nonetheless, if well constructed I believe it is a great idea, something I would have loved to do, but probably would not have because of career opportunities.
  11. I've went to my first class thursday. However I've discovered it's not kickboxing but boxing alone. Anyhow not that it mattered very much. This has got to be one of the toughest training session I have ever been too. My muscles still ache and it's days later. Nonetheless, I did enjoy class and intend to continue boxing as well as Can Ryu Jiu Jitsu.
  12. Hey thanks a lot guys for all the great replies. I had to postpone my kickboxing training to next thursday because a severe snowstorm hit us where I live, but I'm looking forward to start!
  13. Thanks for the reply baronbvp! Yeah I sure hope I'm going to enjoy it!!
  14. I'm about to begin kickboxing next week with my brother. This is part of the two new disciplines we're doing together (Can-ryu Jiu Jitsu for me and he chose kickboxing). I'm 27 by the way and he's 26. However, I fear kickboxing a bit. As most of us here on this forum I work the next day so I wouldn't want to get injured too seriously while doing it. Second I kind of fear the intence training that goes with it (although I do play hockey quite a bit). So my question is what normally happens in a 2 hour class and what you guys think of the kickboxing training in general. Thanks
  15. Hi, I have just started Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu with my brother (private class) and I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this branch of jiu-Jitsu? Is it any good, realistic, etc. Here is the main site http://members.shaw.ca/canryu/index_page0001.htm So if anyone has ever heard of it, practices it, or is kind enough to take a look at the main site I'd like your input please. Thanks
  16. Like I have mentioned before in another thread I happen to be a great amateur of beer - all types of beers Imported, local, etc. I simply love the taste of a quality beer and will never stop drinking that's for sure, I love it too much. I also enjoy a good whiskey or southern comfort at the end of the day before going to sleep. Do I drink too much? Surely, but I very seldom get drunk, only on certain occasions (I never go to bars). Unlike many other drinkers, I do not drink for the 'feeling' but for the taste mainly. I know I will never be in top physical shape because of this, but it's not what I'm looking for either. I play hockey, tennis, etc. for leisure and not for competition so it's fine with me. Like others have mentioned, it's to every one's discretion what and how you drink but moderation is better for sure.
  17. Concerning Elvis Stojko he trained under Chuck Norris apparently, and he also kicked Eric Lindros' butt a few years back in a bar I believe (this is supposedly true). For those who don't know who Eric Lindros is, he's a very big and strong hockey player.
  18. Just looking back at the clip I don't know why each time we see a fight between a TKD guy vs. some other grappler we never see them kick. They bounce around, and receive a double leg take-down which ends the fight. From the video the TKD could have attempted a few kicks but held back. I don't understand this, is it because they are afraid of missing? Do the guy's defense, it was obvious the grappler was physically bigger and stronger.
  19. Have you thought of Krav Maga if you have it near you?
  20. I wonder how hapkido would fare in a self defense situation? Wouldn't it be hard to use on a full on attacker? Thanks for the replies.
  21. I understand your frustration. You have faced more than this and handled it fine and here comes this punk and he scares you out. The shock probably had more to do with it than anything else. Like others mentioned, in war you're expecting the worst and ready for it. But when you're strolling down the street with your wife in a nice neighbourhood and someone threatens you, this is probably something that never happened to you before (correct me if I'm wrong) so you don't know how to react. Now that you've faced it once I'm sure you would react differently if it happened again because now you have earned this experience.

  23. I have long hair, and no sensei would ever force me to cut it if I didn't want to. Find another place, that's what I would have done. I hate those control freaks.
