strength trainging with ur forms.
orion82698 replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in Health and Fitness
Bingo. Weight and resistance training builds strength. If you don't want to lift weights, or cannot try using a band. They're low in cost, and can offer just as many ways to get a great workout in as do weights. I bring a band with me when I go on vacations, if there is no gym in the hotel. -
I have heard of stories like this before, and it's true. Muscle memory. You react, like you train.

Gaining, muscle not fat. I need assistance.

If the roast beef is fresh (cut off the slab) not packaged. There is a lot of crap and preservs put in there. Stay away from that. If it's a fresh roast, eat away. However, try to maintain the same amout of protein in every sitting. If you take in 20 grams for breakfast, but 60 grams for dinner, that's not really balanced. I usually weigh my meats. Now, you don't have to go this far, but I'm very particular, and I feel that my body shows it. I know exactly how many carlories, carbs, fat, protein and even sugars I'm taking in daily. I will say to anyone trying to achieve a mass/fat goal that this is important. Lifting and cardio are only 50% of the process. The diet can make and break a workout, or an entire plan. Look at the power lifters (no offense to them) but they look fat (obesse). Yes, they might be able to bench 700lbs, and squat 1000lbs, but they're still fat. Plain and simple. Why do you lift weights and workout? To look better, right? Not only for yourself, but for the ladies. Ladies don't care what you can bench. If you can put up 100lbs, but looked shreaded, your eye candy! If you can bench 500lbs, but look like you weigh 500lbs in just your gut, your an eye sore. -
There is a pill you can take, but it's prescription. You might have over active sweat glands. I do. I'll break a sweat for no reason, and I stink up my clothes as well. Another thing you have to watch which will cause your sweat to smell is protein intake. If your kidneys cannot break down the protein, it will come out through your pours. Mine smells like milldew, and sometimes bleach. RANK!

Resistance training with a band. This is most often used in physical therapy as well.

Yes. Bench once a week, but heavy. 3-4 sets, 4-6 reps. This is what I do, and my bench has increased 50lbs in 5 months.

Exactly. Don't worry about all the crap. A multi-vitamin, Vitamin C, and fish oil are really all you need. I take Glucosamine for my joints. I tend to have a poping shoulder here or there, and my left knee cracks and gives grief when I do heavy squats. Also... one big thing. Do NOT neglect your legs. Many people say "I work my legs when I do cardio" This is non-sence. I hit my legs hard, then do cardio the very next day. My legs are always sore for atleast 3 days. Yes, you can up your food intake, just make sure it's clean. Perhaps another chicken breast, and extra veggies. Lots of veggies! Good luck bro! -
Awesome Brian. Keep up with it. Remember, your mind is the only thing stopping you. You alone can make the change, and you along can prevent it. You need to tell yourself that you don't need those foods. This was a very hard step for me, but I did it. I love M&M's, chocolate, ice cream, taco-bell.... but I have always wanted my entire life to stop wearing size XL, and a size 40inch waist. Do yourself a favor, take pictures of your weight loss. This way, you can compare them to yourself. Try to do it every 3 weeks. You'll see the difference if you're working hard! I PROMISE YOU!

Awesome! First things first. Don't worry about craming all your meals in the evening. You need to eat every 3 hours. So, every 3 hours, you need a good source of Protein, carbs, and fat. This is a 40/40/20 split diet. Here is what I eat for example. Now, I'm on a cutting diet (trying to lose fat) however, I still lift heavy with intent to gain mass, and it's working too. My lean mass has gone up, and my body fat has gone down. I can tell you, you will need to get a bodyfat caliper. You want to make sure that you're gaining mass, not fat. A pound a week is a good way to go about gaining. Here is my meal plan. Breakfast 6:00am 1 scoop of Whey w/water 1 slice of wheat toast Supplements (fishoil, multi-vitamin, glucosame) Morning Snack 9:00am 1/2 Cup Oatmeal, 1/2 GoLean Lunch 12:00 Chicken 8oz (not both, steak or Chicken) Steak 6oz Veggies 1 cup Brown Rice 1/2 cup Supplements (Fishoil, glucosamine) Mid day Snack (Pre-workout) 3:00pm 1 can of tuna (on lifting days) 1/2 cup of oatmeal 1/2 cup of strawberries 4:00 (Creatine) Workout (5:15-6:30) Post-WO Whey w/water, half cup of oatmeal, and 1 banana (blended) Dinner 8:00 Chicken 8oz Steak 6oz (one of these, not both) Veggies 1 cup Supplements (fishoil, glucosamine) Bed (10:00) Whey w/ milk I have Salmon from time to time. My wife complains about the smell This all adds up to calories between 2200-2300 28 fat 225 carbs 210 protein Now, you don't have to follow my diet, there are tons of stuff you can eat. You would need to eat more than me, being that you're smaller, your body style is different. You need to be eating somewhere around 3000 calories a day, probably even more if your metabolism is really fast. Now, about the whey protein intake. Don't keep that as your only source. Reason being is that other sources of protein like chicken, fish, red meat all have much more nutrients that the body needs. You want to drink a protein shake at the very latest 45 minutes after your workout. Drink it with water (get into the muscles fast via water, instead of milk), and a high glucose intake carb (bananas are good) maybe even some oats. You want to replenish your carbs after a workout. Good luck man, and keep me up to date with your progress. -

A big misconception of martial art practitioners is that if you bulk up too much, you won't have speed. This is not true, but a myth. Bulk up, you'll be fine. Eat 6-7 clean meals a day. Clean meals means not dirty like Mcdonalds and crap. You need a clean source of carbs, protein and fat in your diet. Drink plenty of water, and make sure you rest. Work each large muscle group once a week. Your small fast muscle twitch groups can get more work than others (Calves, abs, arms) however... this doesn't mean work them every day or every other day. Maintain consistance and intensity. Do not scarifice weight for form. Learn to let your ego go, take some of the weight off and complete the exercise correctly. Your body, and muscle groups will thank you. -
Stretching...before or after a run.

Well, we have already talked about your diet, and that alone can break through platues. Another thing you can do to change up and break through walls is to workout at different times. So, say you workout in the evening, try working out in the morning. How is your water intake? How much rest are you getting (Sleep) Are you taking supplements? Which ones? Also, remember what I told you... your larger muscle groups need time to rest. Working them every other day doesn't allow this. Work your large muscle groups once a week. I'll make you a little bet. Fix your diet (clean and strict) work your muscle groups once a week ( and try to lift in 3-4 sets, 4-6 reps). Do this for 4 weeks, and I bet you'll break through your platue!

It will never end. Just like why GM people cannot stand Ford -
Nice job. Congrats! It is a natural reaction that the body causes nausea when put through extreme workload. I will sometimes throwup after a good run if I push myself too hard. I eat 2 hours before my workouts. Your body will get use to it, and soon you'll notice that you won't get sick, but this will take time.

Lucky. You said when you go home..... are you just studied Karate in Japan, or are you there for other reasons? Do you notice a difference in the way they train in Japan? Reason I ask is because I'm looking to plan a trip in the near future for the intent to train in Japan.
-
Awesome! Congrats on taking control of your life. Ask away. I have been on a strict diet for the past 7 1/2 months and have lost almost 70lbs. I have taken my bodyfat from 36% to 15%, and all while keeping my muscle, and bulding a little more. This is very difficult to do, but can be done. It often takes a while longer to achive, but worth it in the end. You too can do this, if you're dedicated and know what you want! It's tough! Changing your lifestyle is more difficult then sitting around and doing nothing with your hands in the chip bag. But.... it will pay off. I promise you!

Pat Morita (Mr. Miyaga) Dies -- Sad

A sad day! -
Yes, this will hinder growth. You're going to be lifting a lot, with not a lot of recovery time. You can eat all you want, if you don't get enough rest, you'll be doing more harm then good. Take the time now to improve your endurance. How long have you been on a bulking cycle? This might do you some good switching up your workouts. Try doing this for a couple of months, then go back to high weight, low reps for bulking.
-
Unless you're hitting the bag at for over an hours time, late a night, and getting very little sleep, not allowing time for recovery, then No. Your shoulders might be a little sore, but thing crazy.
-
You can sweat of water weight the day before. If you really want to, you could drop 8lbs of body water before weigh in, then eat and drink up afterwards. Unless you're eating a suffient amount of calories above your normal, you shouldn't gain weight. Now water weight on the other hand is different.

Yes, it's early, but I'm going to be busy, and I just wanted to express my thanks to this forum. I have learn a lot about martial arts from here, as well as stuff about myself. As for my diet and weight training, well... I just blew that, and tomorrow is going to be even better. But... on Friday, but on the strict diet! Have a safe holiday everyone!

How important is lineage in your MA training?
orion82698 replied to IcemanSK's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, I have asked this question before, and I also felt that it was important. Read the post that I made. I got a lot of feed back. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=23360&highlight=lineage I came to the conclusion that just because your master was Bruce Lee, doesn't mean you can instruct worth anything. Word of mouth, yes is great too... however, then you must worry about the person speaking of this person. I have heard people talk up instructors before. I looked into it, and the Dojo was all McDojo'ish. You must consider the source when going this route. The best way I feel now, is to do many things first. 1. Call the dojo. Are they open about discussing prices? Are they open about discussing if there is a contract or not? Do they talk a lot about certifications in this and being a master in that? - If a place is respectable, they will discuss prices with you up front, along with contracts. 2. See the place for yourself. Get your own feeling about it. Don't listen to someone elses opinion. Is that person going to be there for you if you cannot defend yourself? So why would you trust that person with your training? 3. Take as many free classes as you possibly can. Most times, McDojo practices do not show themselves until down the road. Make sure all the students that are high ranks are not under the age of 10. If they are a Black belt, how long have they been with the school? How many of them are senior students? Now, I'm sure you know most of this, I'm simply just rambling on now
