  1. I started drinking coffee at about 6 or 7years old....My parents drank it so why not???? I down about 7-8 cups a day....I need help!!!
  2. I thought this was pretty embarrasing....therefore, funny. I was testing for SanKyu at my dojo and had completed the first 2 1/2 hours of the testing, now it was kata time. I completed seisan, seiunchin, naihanchi, wansu, and chinto and last but not least, sanchin time.....well I bowed, announced "sanchin" and began...well as soon as I started the first punch, all locked into a good solid sanchin stance, nice and tight...when all of the sudden I let slip with a loud bit of gas....as I turned bright red and wanted to cry, my sensei with a look of suprise shouts "AH.....SANCHIN"......followed by some heavy laughing..Took a little while to get my composure back and finish the kata. Passed by the way...
  3. Tuifa (tonfa)...I like the sai also.
  4. Much thanks Cathal...Helps a lot!
  5. 10-6 kyu-White 6-3 kyu-Green 3-1 kyu-Brown 1-7 dan-Black 7-8 dan-Red/White (optional) 9-10 dan-Red
  6. I have about 8 1960's era Black Belt magazines and am confused about one thing they keep reporting on....Does anyone know how is/was "Count Dante" I know he is/was from the Chicago area, but nothing else...I don't have the old issues that have more info. Thanks
  7. I have done some "light" saprring with my sensei, and he has never injured me(yet!!) He does let me know with a little "snap" where I should be covering and stuff....but knock on wood, no damage as of yet.
  8. I don't wash my obi for a very traditional reason.............I don't want it to shrink and end up having that "great" bowtie look
  9. I love chinto...but to watch, I would have to say any Uechi-Ryu kata....I would love to study that style one day.....Just wish I could find it in North Jersey
  10. Name: John Rank: SanKyu (3rd brown) Style: Isshin-Ryu
  11. I personally have used videos to "learn" kata, not Isshin-Ryu kata but the corresponding styles kata...Shorin and Goju seisan, Goju seiunchin and sanchin, Shorin naihanchi shodan, wansu, chinto, and kusanku dai...obviously not anywhere even close to a Shorin or Goju practitioner, but just to see where the Isshin katas come from, and the diffrences found. It has been a great learning experience for me but I would not attempt to learn Isshin katas this way, way to many movements lost in translation. Just my ramblings
  12. Is that the best hunger or what!!!! Welcome back to you also
  13. I could not agree more...the sad thing is when people NEED the recognition to bolster their self esteem...I think that the vast majority of the folks on this list...you and I included train for ourselves, what a wonderful world it would be if everybody was that way...Imagine..... Would never happen...but it would be lovely :D
  14. I think the dan system is horrible, I would rather have the knowledge than the 137th dan....if you are a good, your technique will speak for you, you don't need a dan or diffrent belt to do it for you. Just an opinion.
  15. So much for the spirit of the thing....sounds like seniors to look down on instead of up to....sad.
  16. I you like I could send the list of Advincula sensei seminars for this year. He will be in NJ 2 or 3 times, CT once and I think Brooklyn, not sure. He runs really great seminars, lots of info and you get it from a 1st generation student. If your interested let me know. Cheers!!
  17. I was always told by my sensei, have more than one gi...wash the one you trained in as soon as possible..even if you sweat lightly(which I don't) and have the other one/ones ready for the next class. I would not like to workout with pigpen from peanuts in the dojo
  18. I don't see the posts as a lecture...you asked a group and they replied....I thought that was the idea of this forum?
  19. Best of luck on your renewed training and welcome back to the group.
  20. My sympathies to you and Kevin's family. I pray thay find peace.
  21. We also just learn the basic stuff, stances, techniques, etc: Not much else besides.
  22. Do you also have a "you must be this tall to train in this dojo" sign like thay do for rides at amusement parks at the dojo door....Do you have a size 6 gi at the door also for prospective students to try on before they may join??? Who cares what the size tag or any tag for that matter on a gi says....putting the gi on, getting on the floor, and training your hardest is what matters. I am interested in what my sensei can teach me....It does not matter if he is wearing a gi or not, he has and is willing to share the knowledge if I am willing to work for it. The rest is superfical nonesense. And as far as my build...I am 6'1" 240 lbs, 44" waist, 50" chest, I powerlift, and have done so for the past 14 1/2 years, run 3 times a week, and train 3 times a week. I wear a Shureido gi...6.5 pants and 7 top and obi...So I guess I shold not let you know if I am every in town and would like to train
  23. My dojo also has no fee for testing, my sensei also has no commercial dojo, we train in his "converted" 3 bay garage attached to his home. It has all the equipment and supplies we need and the tuituin is 15 bucks a class and they run 3 hrs. each...tuesdays and thursday. I am also lucky in that my sensei is a very personable guy, if you are around and want to train on say...monday, if I give him a call and he is not busy, you are more than welcome to go to the house and train...no cost, he always says he is happy when students show the extra interest, and he likes the opportunity to teach and train extra himself.....It is really refreshing to see so many of you that are as happy with their sensei as I am.
