  1. never saw sanchin done in compitition...must be very dramatic.
  2. You could try looking for tokumine-no-kun bo kata, fairly easy to learn and look good, it's okinawan, can be found in many styles...isshin,shorin,etc...
  3. Isshin-Ryu
  4. our dojo has White-10-9-8-7 kyu Green-6-5-4 kyu Brown-3-2-1 Kyu Black Belt It is not unusual to see a slightly frayed white belt, also when we go to seminars, it is sometimes funny to see a white belt still standing and running thru kata with yellow, orange, blue, green or what ever spectrum of colors some other dojo's have from 10-7th kyu, same with green belts...brown are usually the same.
  5. Even if your not in shape, if you take the time to hit the boards and your trying to make a difference...that is the right mindset....EFFORT.
  6. If I think they are gonna hit me....I will clock em' first....and continue until the threat is gone. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6!!!!!
  7. Usually place in kata....don't enter sparring.....hate playing tag!
  8. make that GENERAL...not gerberal, love those furry little guys!!!!
  9. In our dojo, we line up high to low, right to left, standing bow to sensei and dojo shomen(front)then begin...we don't sit in seiza at all...we end in the same way.
  10. become assistant instructor.........and not stink at it!!!
  11. I had bad asthma when I was a kid and generally sucked at other sports, a local TKD school came to my school when I was in 3rd grade and put on a demonstration...I was hooked!! I trained TKD for almost 8 years and then moved to a new town...no TKD to be found(imagine that!!!) BUT, I found an Isshin-Ryu school...at first I was very confused, complet oppisite style, but I stayed with it and fell in love....I have been there since...almost 15 years now.....man I feel old...
  12. I would invite him to class and let him try...as for the olympian sensei....point sparring is a game of tag,(not knocking his condition and dedication), ask him to try some good hard ippon or sanbon kumite....that may open his eyes....(or shut them a little!!!)
  13. isshinryu....(so many variations!!) matsubayashi,kobayashi,shobayashi,matsumora-seito,shorinkan,shidokan,USA.......shorinryu (and possibly more!!) jundokan,USA,Japanese,Chinese,etc...gojuryu( i know there is more I just can't remember!!) uechiryu (also pangai noon) ryueryu( i think?) and these are just some from okinawa alone......
  14. I have 4 heavywt gi's and i like them much more than the lt. wt. ones I had in the beginning of my training, when I wash them I use tide w/bleach alternative...works great...also I have that oxyclean powder.. I make a paste with a little water and rub it into tought(blood) stains before washing, has worked everytime!! good luck
  15. They also sell the bob as a hanging dummy, one strap above the head and two below the torso....kinda hangs like the old double end stricking ball. I like the one with the base more...
  16. if you have a wooden dummy, cherish it, I would love to get one but they are a little pricey....
  17. You could only fill the middle OR top section and secure it that way..I never struck the lower partor the top for that matter, I could then raise or lower it and have a new striking surface....OR you could place a foam pad in the front and fill the back with raw beans..
  18. For geberal Isshin-Ryu info try https://www.isshinryu-is-life.com or msisshinryu.com,lots of articles and info.. Good Luck
  19. How many belts are involved if you have half kyu's......maybe panneled white/yellow...yellow/green etc!!!! Wear a few panneled belts to tournaments and they will probibly think your a master!!!!!
  20. Wash hot and dry hot......
  21. I was told chucks were a horse bridle....turned into a weapon when needed..and they are from Okinawa, not Japan (there is a difference!)
  22. Eoisin Panther is the best quality and price....in my sorrofully humble opinion!!
  23. Hello, I have the exact same bag, the body outline one....I had mine filled with sand and had it hanging from 4 "s" hooks in a concrete wall....the wall was fine but the grommets ripped where they met the canvas...so it had to be retired..blood stains and all!!!
  24. I owned the shureido super heavyweight do-gi, and thought it was the best gi in the world......until I bought a Mejin gi from Dragon associates I never had a gi fit like this one, and you can split sizes 1-7...and they run up to size 10!!! Excellent fit and service!!
  25. We move up and down the dojo floor in a low,low horse stance for 40 minutes on our "conditioning nights"..sets the legs on fire!!!
