I know in okinawan karate their is the term "chinkuchi" which translates to something like muscle, bone, power or something...same kind of thing. -
complex, long karate style suggestion + other questions
strangepair03 replied to Exponential's topic in Karate
Wow...such tempers......find a school (close to your home, always good) and see if they have a trial program, like 1 month and a gi for some set price and give it a try...If you don't like the style/school/sensei or what ever you just move on after your month or so....try somewhere else. And the bowing thing.....just like saying hello/thank you /I get it/that hurt...it pretty much covers everything you have to say in the beginning. ..Good luck and enjoy yourself, life is way to short to sweat the small stuff.. and it's all small stuff -

I think I bought the wrong size sai
strangepair03 replied to dtstiachi's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I would not keep them, you may develop a feel for them and then buy the right size and have to start all over again....Do you think the store owner would exchang them for the right size or are they not concerned/understanding your predicament? When in doubt.....Ebay!! Good Luck -
Thanks for the info....best in the new year

I found as I progressed, I felt more confident in my abilites and my nerves calmed considerably.

No doubt Shorinryu Sensei...I took the question as a real threat to self, not just an argument going sour or something of that nature...I would do everything I could to avoid any physical clash, to me that is the real meaning behind our training. However if it was a group or an armed situation, where the threat is more than a possible butt whippin, I would "do what I have to do". I would never and have never carelessly use my training.

I know in my style Isshin Ryu we don't have beginner katas...our first kata is seisan, I think it is called hangetsu in Shotokan, it was rought to learn...took about 2 months to get down the movements. I would say I have a good grip of the kata, confortable with the moves and bunkai but still challenges me just as much as our "advanced" kata. While everyone is here, where does hangetsu rank in Shotokan, I heard it was an upper level kata? Thanks

Martial arts organizations
strangepair03 replied to afitzwater's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I belong to 3 organizations...the only reason I do is I like the different publications they produce!!! I know what I know and no board, organization, commite, needs to send me a "certificate of rank and or membership" at what ever the going rate is now to remind me, all my promotions have been a result of gruling testing with my sensei, followed by a bow, handshake, belt and a congratulations. Just my ramblings. -
Make him the uke!!!!!!!!!!!11

When I was promoted to greenbelt-6th kyu...I was told to lead the class in our basic exercises, then sent back to my place in line, when I got brown belt, I led the entire class for the night, and I had to make the call on what we were covering...very different being in front of all those eyes...especially my sensei and sempai!!!! I loved it after I learned to raise my voice a bit
-
Our school charges for the price of the belt only, usually 6 bucks.
-
no music......pay attention to your work out.
-
I think if you do video training for evaluation and correction only then great...if you are doing it for promotion/advancement not so good, if you only practise kata and never hit or more importantly, get hit you don't know if what you learned will work or how you will react under the pressure of attack/defence. Just my ramblings......

You can try some dvd's about okinawan kobudo...many are very well done and easy to learn the basics from...also finding the right sized sai helps also.....sould be about 1 inch shorter than the length measured from your extended middle finger to the elbow...example your measurement is 21" you should buy 20" sai...and so on Good Luck

Need some advice
strangepair03 replied to cyberdude__2000's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Take a look at some different dojo's and try the one most comfortable...once your there you may enjoy the interaction with others, remember the hardest part of training sometimes is putting your gi on. Once your there you find the motivation.....one more thing, everyone was a white belt at one time. Relax and have fun with it, if it becomes a chore, you should look elsewhere. Good Luck
