Thanks so much koryu....just what I was looking for!

I am in Northern New Jersey....how lucky for me.....

Hello all...I was hoping someone could tell me where I could buy some traditional hojo undo equipment. Nigiri game(gripping jars), chiishi(stone lever), ishisashi(stone padlocks), tetsu geta (iron clogs) etc; I know I can get modern stuff, but I really like the traditional gear. Thanks

I thank you for the invite...this is a tough 3 weeks for me...I am a piper in an Emerald society band and as you can guess this is the "holy month" I will drop you a line when things let up.

What ever happened to traditional bo kata????? No "twrilling bo of death" or other side show theatrics, just clean, powerful, techniques done with complete command and control over the weapon????? No silver and neon blue gi's and 1 hand handstands....no triple backwards, upsidedown, 5.4 degree somersault with strobe lights attached to your ankles and sparklers hanging off your back!!! Sorry to sound crappy, but I guess I like the simple things in life. -
I know how you feel, my wife and I have a 5 month old boy...our first and I always think to the future how-godwilling..he will take up the arts and really love them as I do. I am glad someone else out there feels the same way as I....taking him to his kids class, then him watching me in the adult class...the drive home, man you hit it right on the head!!!! Those WILL be some happy days for both of us!!! All the best

It may not mean anything, but my Isshin-Ryu sensei has always told me that Naihanchi (shorin based)is the mother and sanchin (goju based)is the father of Isshin-Ryu, a blend of Shorin and Goju (among others). This is aparently what the founder Shimabuku Tatsuo said. Naihanchi goes side to side and sanchin goes front to back...together their embusen makes a cross pattern. Naihanchi teaches quick, fluid movements, while sanchin has the dynamic (?) tension...kind of like both ends of the spectrum. I don't know if this makes anysense...it did when I was told it, but who knows how I just butchered the explanition!!!!

I will let you know...I am usually in the city twice a month or so.

I believe in the saying -Rank follows the man(or woman)not the other way around. As long as I am still learning new things, I would never leave, it is in my soul. Keep all the belts, gi's, certificates, etc; I just want to train, for me; Not my parents, wife, sensei, or my sensei's sensei...just for my own health, benefit, and enjoyment Just more of my mindless ramblings...Oops..... gotta go, the Doctor. is bringing me my medicine Have fun everybody!!!

Black Belt Magazine?
strangepair03 replied to GhostlySykanRyu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I voted monthly...got it as a "gift" and feel obligated to atleast take it out of its plastic bag...Honestly, I read the column "Karate Way" by Dave Lowery, cause I like the way he writes, have a few of his books...then I place it back in its plastic bag and place it in a new, bigger plastic bag that I then place at the curb. -
Hello Isshinryu5toforever, what is your opening to wansu like? I think one of the positive(maybe the only positive) things about the various isshinryu lineages are the different "interperatations" of our kata. Come to think of it "positive" maybe the wrong word but....who knows!! Thanks
-
I think all of us in Isshin-Ryu have seen a few too many red and white "candycane" belts in our day!!! LOL

Are you happy at your current dojo/style.
strangepair03 replied to jedimc's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I could not be happier with my current sensei, dojo, and style...they all fit me to a "t"...good hard training, balanced with a relaxed atmosphere...can't go wrong!!!! Hope the same for all!!! -
aes...for indoor winter practise I have been using a 4 foot 1 3/4 inch wooden dowel I bought at home depot....I can go thru my kata with proper hand placement and I don't smash up the house (usually!!!) Hope this help

I made a paste out of water and okyclean and scrubbed with a hard bristle brush, then washed with tide with bleach alternative...worked well for me.

what cage or face mask to put over my karate head gear
strangepair03 replied to matbla's topic in Karate
Mizuno makes a decent one, with a plastic face shield. -
make that slightly ....sorry about that!!!
-
We also use a slight;y deeper seiunchin stance..the knees over the toes is how we measure the depth....seiunchin is also used in the opening of wansu kata with the "hidden fist" movement. I know some schools use a naihanchi, sanchin or seisan stance in the opening...anyone else?????
-
In addition to moving in a circular manner, when sparring with someone bigger than yourself, use more power than you normally would....not saying "crush" your dojo mate, but sting them a little...they will respect your power and make them a bit more leary.....Trust me I am 6'1" and weigh about 280..when I spar with someone smaller (alot of folks!!!), I am pleasantly suprised when I get "zinnged" good...Helps keep things in prespective Just my mindless babble!!!

Koryu hit the nail right on the head....in our dojo and many others, "Everyone works"--only the sensei walks the dojo floor, correcting and teaching. Everyone else is working, diffrent ranks on diffrent things of course, but "Everyone works" Sweat soaked gi's and sore muscles for everyone!!!
-
Health and happiness to you and yours!!!

San kyu(3rd brown) in Isshin-Ryu, not ranked but trained in Shaolin Chin-na under Dr. Yang jwing-Ming (levels 1-4) and Chen Taiji.
