Stick with it, one month from now you will see a hugh difference in how you feel. Echoing the other posts, remember to hammer your basics....correct form and focus. Although it seems tedious and boring, it will really pay off in the long run. Advanced techniques are basic techniques done with power, focus and grace Good luck on this long, wonderfull path you have taken

Hello all, I was curious if anyone could give a listing of kata used in ShorinRyu ShorinKan. Thanks

All the best to you, and good luck on your new path

I personally like the square tuifa. If you are doing a lot of bo/tuifa kumite then I would use the round...they do not cause as much damage to the weapons. I am a big fan of shureido tuifa....Pricey yes, but they will last and are a smooth as silk.

I agree with you on this. We also have a 10 kyu system but only have white, green, brown belts prior to shodan. A piece of tape on the belt does not indicate "high" or "low", it is a measure of time in rank. And more importantly, just like you said, all the belt does is hold up you pants! Domo

We use mostly Japanese/Okinawan in the dojo. I think if you study a system from another country, you should atleast learn the names of the techniques, salutations and be able to count in the native tounge. But that's just me

Good point!!

Who's your sensei...I am friends with a guy that teaches in Brooklyn?

Your Gi: 100% Cotton or cotton poly blend?
strangepair03 replied to Armbar's topic in Equipment and Gear
Thanks for the info, I just purchased a KW-11 (middleweight)....My next will be one of the new waves, the NW-2 would be about the right weight? -
Your Gi: 100% Cotton or cotton poly blend?
strangepair03 replied to Armbar's topic in Equipment and Gear
That's because of the modern high quality poly/cotton blends. Top brands have taken the development past cotton. If the poly/cotton would still mean the same as it did 5 years ago (in case of karate uniforms), nobody would vote it. I see your point....I guess I should jump into the modern times and try one of the newer blend gi's.....In my head they all remind me of the horrible century ones that came out in the late 80's (if you remember) -
Your Gi: 100% Cotton or cotton poly blend?
strangepair03 replied to Armbar's topic in Equipment and Gear
I am suprised that the poll is almost even.....I thought 100 % cotton would be ahead by far.?.?.?. -
Please let us know.....I own a few Shureido and am curious about the new wave.

Don't forget patience....I hae been gradually increasing my stretches for thw past 8-9 months and have yet to reach a split.....it has to be my hips, not flexable enough yet. I am still working on it and am a big guy also. I stretch for a total of an hour day and have everyday and have greatly increased my flexibility......just can't seem to get that split yet!!!!!!! Good luck

Sparring and traditional karate are 2 very different things. Light, quick and snap are good for sparring. Stability, body mechanics and focus are necessary for tradition karate and self defence. I think sparring is a great exercise for developing stamina, maai, and breaking a good sweat, But it is not karate. Don't want to start a war here, just dropping an opinion.... Cheers!!!
