  2. SO what do you suggest I do??
  3. I want to start learning some ki excercises. What do you suggest for a newbie to ki?
  4. Welcome to KF, sounds like you've been around the block a few times.
  5. Many people dislike all martial arts. Just yesterday, some kids came up yelling at us and making fun of us. SO don't worry, you're not alone.
  6. Try going to a sword dealer and asking for cleaning and anti-rust solutions.
  7. Try using a little toothbrush to spot clean the stains.
  8. NEW FLASH!!! They are a mythical Chinese bird called Hou-Ou (in Chinese they are called feng huaungi) The word is usually translated phoenix in English, because they are associated with fire. You can get a painting and description (in Japanese) picture of a modern Hou ou on: http://kz-houou.hp.infoseek.co.jp/ The Hou ou is the symbol of accomplishment ("zensho") or doing the appropriate thing, and is often used on certificates of meeting a standard. They look like peacocks if they are drawn with long tails (there is some artistic license in how they should be represented) but peacocks are called "kujyaku" in Japanese.
  9. Who has read this book? I'm just curious to know what you learned from it. I got that book and Karate-Do My Way of Life by Gichin Funakoshi today. What would you rate either (or both) of these books?
  10. Near LA
  11. I got 6 first time, 16 second
  12. How about your dojo name and/or patch?
  13. A cool thing I learned last Sunday is keeping one foot stationary. You can do it in a very small area. For example, Heian Shodan. first move is step out, downblock. you can't move the left foot, so you step away with your right foot. Hope this makes sense. So the whole time, one foot stays perfectly still. Or, you can have one student do it at a time do it. If there isn't enough space, instead of stepping forward and running into the wall, have them step back and step forward. This works the leg muscles. If the next move is step in punch, have them step back with the front leg and quickly change before they fall down. Okay, hope a made at least a little bit of sense.
  14. Thanks for the advice, it looks a little bit more correct now
  15. Today, I was corrected when doing yoko geri kekomi for leaning back when kicking. How do you think is the best way to correct this and minimize the lean? Thanks in advance for your advice.
  16. Somebody was assinated with an umbrella that had like poison coated balls in the tip.
  17. I use a broken shovel handle as a club. I just cut it and sanded it smooth. If you really want to make a jo, you can probably get rounded sticks at Home Depot or something like that.
  18. I remember when I first got my black belt and some kid asked my sensei if I had to register at the police department and my sensei just said, "He's still the same person isn't he?" It's not like getting a black belt suddenly allows you to kill someone by touching them, or shotguns grow out of your fingers.
  19. I'm going to one this Sunday, and I might help judge a "fun tournament" that they have.
  20. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,161768,00.html I'm sure most of you have heard the story by now. We should keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
  21. Jutaefushodo The grappling and takedowns of Judo The powerful, graceful kicks of TKD The flowing techniques of Kung FU All worked into Shotokan
  22. Just wondering, what do you think of me taking Judo next summer (just for the summer) That can't bleed into my karate (I think) and it will augment my takedowns in kumite. What do you guys think?
  23. Our dojo has the little cubs program ...(you know that don't you?) Cubs-3-4 Tiger-5-6
  24. I train for a minimum of 3 hours. I also assist in instruction of youth, and, like today, when there is an odd number, I train with them for sparring and partner drills. I have 3 hours of my regular (adult) class and 2-4 of youth instruction
