Your most difficult grading.
ShotokanKid replied to cathal's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
My Nidan test by far. I failed During kihon, my side started hurting really badly so my technique was sloppy. During kumite, there was a kid there, who had come from the Philippines with his instructor (who was testing for 5th dan). He nailed me in the face so that my mouth guard came out. The black belt in charge gave him a point (even though you're supposed to control the punches to the face). I decided if they were going to score that, I would get him. I came in and whacked him in the face, he quickly recovered and hit me again in the mouth. They stopped the match and made me go wash the blood out of my mouth. That was not the best of days. -
Between Ortiz and Shamrock, who do you think will win? And here's the UFC 61 previews and stuff: http://wwworigin.ufc.tv/ufc61/

Been playing for about 5 years. I have 2 classicals, a Fender Stratocaster, and a Gibson Songwriter Deluxe.

I took a seminar just on this, but it's not really my style. My style is more quick; enpi or kanku-sho. I think this is a great kata for breathing, control, and body dynamics.

I don't feel the techniques are impractical, I just feel the technique is different now; we don't need the techniques for the same purpose.

I was taught to put both hands up with the palms out... one of the black belts (who is also my doctor) said to do this and try to calm them down. This serves as a non-threatening, "I'm unarmed and don't want trouble" position but also as a guard; you are protecting your body and you can drive your fingers into his eyes if he starts to attack.

I don't want to develop back problems so I wanted to ask you: What are the things you want to avoid to keep from messing up your back? For example, we did some shoulder stretching today and we had to touch hands behind our backs. A lot of us felt pain when we straightened our backs. Is arcing backwards bad? What about reaching for your toes is you don't bend at the waist? Please give me some examples of stuff you don't want to do.

I feel the same way. After reading Shotokan's Secrets, I feel a lot of the techniques no longer are properly trained. However, I feel that the people who changed the techniques did so for a reason: they are extremely dangerous and can be deadly. You wouldn't want to teach this to children. The original purpose of kata is not the same as it is now.

I never really enjoyed Jion, but I had a champion team kata team using this kata.

Welcome to the forum. It's pretty neat about the dog showmanship... my dog's sister was a white collie and a show dog, but our dog was oversized and would have gotten a billion penalties in the ring. P.S. I live in MA about 7 years ago.

Look in your bookstore in the martial arts section. Some of the stuff is really interesting (blind spots, weapon concealment, etc)

Ditto. Good job on doing the right thing.

Hello everyone, I got it down. I didn't really realize that Thanks for all the instruction, I pulled this on one of my friends, who is also my grappling training partner. Anyway, thanks again, I got it down. Now I've got another problem. When I try to do this somethimes my partner clasps his hands and I get get the arm back. Should I keep trying to pull on it or should I give up on the armbar? My other question is, if I abandon my attempt to armbar him, what is the best position to move from if I have my legs across and I'm holding his arm? SHould I try to go back to mount or what should I do?

Do you own a pair? I kind of want to get some but I don't know, they can be expensive.

Did Gracie's arm break? Was Gracie knocked out? I saw it on Youtube and it looked like he was moving after the ref stopped the match.
-
Never mind, I found one... too bad he got beaten, I wanted Gracie to win. I thought Gracie would lose, but I didn't really expect him to lose on the ground, I expected him to get knocked out while standing.

Actually, "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation." .

I'm having trouble doing an armbar. I can't do it without a cup on, but I see other guys doing armbars (when they're not wearing cups, and they're lifting their hips off the ground). What am I doing wrong? Is there a specific way my body and his arm has to be positioned so it doesn't hurt? I can't do the regular armbar without a cup so I put the arm across my thigh, and they escape because I don't have enough leverage. So, how do you do this: http://www.asu.edu/clubs/pankration/ArmBar.jpg without a cup and without hurting yourself?
