This is only a superficial similarity. How do I know? Training in Goju since 1986. Studied Shotokan 3 years before that. Work out with friends in shotokan (usually sandans or higher) You will not see the huge differences in a tournament, especially in sparring because of the rules. Certain Goju kata are rarely done in a tournament because they don't score well as ther are too many soft techniques. Sorry, I just meant that they are categorized as traditional Okinawa styles that often compete together. I actually don't know too much about Goju, I was just assuming (from previous competitions) when I made that post. My mistake, I apologize for any misleading information.

Pressure Points - mystical or basic biomechanics?
ShotokanKid replied to Jiffy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That was so funny. I thought maybe it was something when the EMTs said the different things were acting funny, but when he couldn't do it on anyone else, hmmm... He would have to do it to me twice for me to believe it. -
We go back and forth. Usually, with the advanced class, he uses maybe 90+% Japanese, but with beginner and intermediate, he uses only some Japanese.

Decoy Wallet
ShotokanKid replied to bat in a birdless village's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It's a great idea, but the only problem I think could occur is if someone sees you take out your real wallet (at a store or something) and they follow you. I would make sure my wallet and my decoy are pretty similar and kept in a place not too far apart. It's a good idea. -
I saw that fight... I remember Ken was all mad about it afterwards, saying look at the tape, but if you look at it, he got a clean hard blow to the jaw, he turned his back and fell through the ropes. I think that was reason enough for the ref to stop it. I like Sakuraba too. He's so funny, I liked his entry in his fight with Gracie, when you couldn't tell which one was him. He's a great fighter too.

My dad commutes to work on his bike. I used to be really into BMX but not anymore... I got too busy and my bike got messed up.

I heard about Kosen Judo and Kodokan Judo. To my understanding, they are two different styles, Kodokan focusing on throws, Kosen, focusing on ne-waza. Can anyone tell me more about Kosen and Kodokan? Also, what other styles are there?

Glad you all enjoyed it. No idea, I guess the guy scored a point for the other kid

A DRUNK DRIVER RAN INTO OUR DOJO!!!
ShotokanKid replied to parkerlineage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Way to put a positive spin on things. I agree. Have fun with the mat -
Is this for a daidojuku fight? As far as weight, I only have experience gaining. Sorry I can't help, but I'm just curious if it is for a daidojuku match. If so, does your weight division allow groin strikes? That's awesome that you do daidojuku, I've seen some matches, that's some crazy, brutal looking stuff.

Lucky you that you have so many options. In my biased opinion, do Gracie JJ. But of course, that's biased. When it comes down to picking, you should decide based on price, convenience, teaching, and your own goals. Sit down and write out what you want to get out of doing a martial art. Sit in on a few classes and decide if the class fulfills your goal. I don't want to narrow it down and pick between a few of the schools you listed because I don't want to weed out a potentially good school. Sit in on a few classes. Hope I helped.

Is this by invitation only? It would be cool to watch, unfortunately I don't think I would be able to go. Are you going to film it? If you do, please post a video online. Good luck if you compete.

Haven't heard of it, and I would love to go but I wouldn't be able to. I am going to a seminar early July.

Ditto. It's still pretty effective and safer. When you use your knuckles, you can split them and get infections and maybe diseases (if you break the skin on their teeth and their silava gets into the cut or something like that). I just read the part about diseases in a hand-to-hand combat instructional writing.

A DRUNK DRIVER RAN INTO OUR DOJO!!!
ShotokanKid replied to parkerlineage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sorry about your dojo, I'm glad you weren't hurt. One time, we had some kids come and set off some kind of firework or paintball bomb on our window. Our windows have been cut with glass cutters. We should make the dojo windows out of barbed wire or something Sorry about the window at your dojo -
Patches on your uniform?

1 dojo patch -
Liddel smashed Ortiz, Ortiz smashed Shamrock. Therefore, by the Law of Syllogism of deductive reasoning, Liddel smashed Shamrock. Okay, I was just messing around, it doesn't always happen that way in the UFC.

looking to start MMA
ShotokanKid replied to K San's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
You're pretty tall for 13. If there is no one who can train you, start online. A bunch of the Gracie BJJ instructional DVDs can be viewed online (with google video or something similar). Same goes for striking techniques; there's a lot of stuff on google video on muay thai and boxing. -
I looked into it and I'm confused... is Ortiz fighting or not? He has a fractured fibula, not an ACL tear. So are they finding a new fighter for Griffin and is Ortiz fighting Shamrock?
-
Tito got a knee injury so Forrest Griffin is fighting. Who do you think will win between the two of them?

Never tried it, but I've done archery. My great-great grandfather or someone taught either kyudo or spear (in Japan) I think it was spear though.
