Do you consider Pro Wrestling a martial art?
47MartialMan replied to dingyuan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"And as a genre, it is ENTERTAINMENT." So I guess boxing, MT, point MA tourneys, Shaolin Monks in a show, are not martial arts or martial artists? "Martial Arts: studies, styles, or systems relating to the ways of fighting or war. " By this definition, then it existed before any philosophy. "It does not teach the discipline associated with MA's nor does it teach the philosophy and belief system." Sure they have a discipline, a mentality to train. What if a pro wrestler retired, formed his own martial arts system, and taught his moves based on his wrestling methods and training? Now that he no longer "entertains", he has a martial art and is a martial artist? Are you saying the difference is philosophy, discipline, belief system, and ENTERTAINMENT? Martial arts were originally developed as a form of unarmed combat in the orient as well as countires like Egypt and India. Part true, but since war is with the result of weapons, then unarmed is totally accurate. And, what about other cultures and countries that had their warriors and methods? -
Hmmn define the difference between strength and power. It would seem that the two are analogous,

Ninja is as much as a style as pro wrestling- they both use smoke, household weapons, and masks.

Yeah, but isn't some boxing "scripted"? Aren't some MA tournaments "scripted"? The training of the methods that they do can be used for fighting applications. Now, here is where I must confess-I can't stand WWE or TV wrestling. But I had watched these guys train. I had watched their methods-mostly JJ and Judo. Although a stupid thing to do, I had seen, heard of, and read where people actually get hurt using these methods. The point is to define what a martial art is. -
The same goes for shin conditioning and hands up training.

Why to my questioning? or Why do it? I am just saying, given the amount of time spent doing this, couldn't the time be spent on something better? Back in the day, when fighting was a way to make a living, or as such payable competition now, but for the average citizen with a job, kids, etc.?

I guess the true test would be how practical their techniques are outside of TV land. *shrugs* IMO, no it's not an MA, but a sport (and I use sport loosely). I think pro-wrestling lacks depth of technique, practicality, philosophy and the discipline to be a true MA. I see a true MA as a search for harmonizing mind and body... these guys come off as crush/kill/destroy in a steroid rage for no other reason than TV ratings. Hmmn UFC, shoot fighting, boxing, MT, etc., fall under this? If you put these guys up against a true MA, they wouldn't last, IMO. They're big and intimidating... but it's not the size that matters... oh, wait... that's something else. Are you sure? How can you tell for certain? One of "this" vs "that" -

So a pro-wrestler, whom trains in the many methods of physical conflict, cannot be considered a martial artist or practicing a martial art? -

So it becomes reflexive/automated? Excuse, but I had nevered bothered by that. I guess there was much emphasis on other things. -
But for what reason? Will such a activity, given the current social era, cease for the practitioner, as the decades go by? And, the training that I have seen/been, the knuckles do not "grow", they look flat because of the callous and build-up between each.

I agree. I guess I am from the "old-school" of weightlifting.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, however, we just held such an event two weeks ago at the AKA Grand Nationals. We had black belt /advance rank wushu divsions. Everything ran smoothly. We did not have a extremely huge turn out for the wushu specific events, but I feel that is mostly due to not promoting it very well. The turn out is low because there maybe not too many Wu Shu practitioners in your area. And, Wu Shu or CMArtists usually remain within their own. The "birds of a feather" thing. That is why I was trying to get feed back from the wushu people on what we could do to make it appealing for them to enter such a tournament in the future. Although the concept has been tried, I agree and admire with your effort. With return sincerity and respect, 47MM

So why can't boxing be a martial art. Given the definition of each word in the term? What is the definition of martial? What is the definition of art? And the current definition, in most dictionaries, martial arts are indigenous to Asian fighting systems-is this inaccurate? -

Very risky move. I have trained this and it is hard in a controlled situation, now try it with someone moving, the adrenaline flowing and the attacker moving the knife hand around. Remember if a knife is shown plan on getting cut. I have to agree. This move is too fancy and hazardous. That is why I stated using a jacket or chair, etc. -

Gee AngelaG, I did not think you would get offended-I apologize. In reference to same ol-same ol, no matter how it is titled, tactical systems, have a common teaching. In that retrospect, some people believe they are a recently new concept. This is what I had meant-that there is nothing "new" that wasn't taught long ago. In your thinking, if I am not worng, tactical systems are not martial arts? What old traditions? Besides old traditions-define art. In reference to the definition of martial art, how would you define it? -

Does one really need to put much emphasis on this instead of another tactic? -
A question?

Why do people change it? No one changes the spelling of Karate or Judo. -
Yes, you have the right to complain. This is the point that I make. Perhaps in your complaining, registered voters whom know you, or related to you, will take your side. Thus next time, they may vote along your views. And this is why, in one way, ANYONE can complain.
