  1. Same here on looking for a video. Speaking of Wallace, was he part of a group who was "out to challenge" Stephen Segul?
  2. My first test. I didnt even know I was being tested. I was told to do my best performance. I thought it was just a checkup to see if I had any problems Next thing I knew, I was promoted.
  3. Double testing are rare, esp in McDojos. However, I had a scant few. I was surprised, because I wasn't "looking" for them.
  4. Horse stance on cinder blocks holding a small cudgel (at leat 14in long) out gripping only one end/edge. Remain in that position as long as possible. Record and beat time
  5. I wonder if that mechanic would fix their car more often?
  6. Not really, TKD was designed for a national art. Not battlefield.
  7. OK, but is BJJ that much different than JJJ?
  8. Thanks, Just messin around
  9. In the words of Gomer Pyle: "Well goll.....ly!" "Shazame!" I guess my post wasn't interesting
  10. A little tale: The testing day, for a Black Belt, in one of many systems that I had studied, the test was privately scheduled. Preparations were made by my instructor and I only knew that I had to perform many hsings (sets) and some sparring. After, a serious of doing the sets, 9 of them, but left and right, which made it 18. All of them had to be done in consecutive order with only a 2-minute break, or shall I say "pause", in between. Needless to state I was exhausted. Then came the sparring. This was not the usual that we had. The instructor had a circular "ring" taped on the floor. The ring was about 12-14 in circumference. (This is a approx, I have to look through my notes so long ago) The object: The BB candidate had to remain in the ring, no matter what, for a period of 5-6 minutes (ditto on notes) There were two opponents, that can do anything to get the candidate out of the ring. Once outside, the whole BB test was considered invalid. Thus a re-take would be scheduled much later in time. My two opponents, one "familiar" male, in his 30's. And a very unfamiliar female, near the same age. Since I was younger (and a little naive), I had thought that I had youth over them. And I had also thought, that all I had to do was focus primarily on the male. How wrong was I. Within 2-minutes after tussling with the male, the female had kicked me so hard in the abs, that I had "sailed" completely out of the ring several feet and gasping for air. Come to find out, she was the instructor's best female student and a sparring champion. Further, in the future, we had sparred and she is one tough cookie. I came away wiser, to say the least.
  11. What is the best mindset to workout in? Unless she is actually in one of your class, draw strength form your MA clsss. As a teacher, look upon the instruction and gain positive thoughts from the many students whose lives you are touching. Whenveer I am down, I draw srength from my family, my daughter, and my students. I would state religion, but I did not want to stir up any controversy. Where are your mind and emotions focused when you feel that you received the most benefit from Training. The training never has me thinking about things outside of the training hall. I enjoy it too much. The moment I walk in and dress, my mind is focused on a role, a job to do. Something like a Zen state. And you know you have this when someone tells YOU, that the time is up. Think of it as going to a movie. Would you think about this siutation in a theatre when the film is going on? Do you find that a certain amount of natural anger will help spur your body and mind into action? Sometimes, anger is a good stress relief provided that it is force into a direction that has no consequences. There are some that tend to "bottle-up" anger, but then explode, in many ways beyond control. So a little anger ventilation is psyhcological beneficiary. Do so, away from others. If you have a personal favorite, train with somone that will help you in confidence to disperse this anger. or, do you prefer to have an absolute peace and calm mind, body, and spirit while you are training? It is easy to seek these, provided that the mind is focused. If your mind is not focused in the first place, these would not be obtained. Here is the way I see it: Yes, I am a person that does not like personal conflict. And unlike others, I DO mind what others say or think about me. I have a moral image and obligation to be what an Amercian Indian, would say, "A Better Human". If you had offered you humble apology and it was not accepted, then it IS the other person whom has the wrongful moral image. In another instance, maybe this person is "not ready" to forgive. Maybe you have to drop the subject, be friendly as usual, and see what "time" has.
  12. Speaking of Books- "What The Buddha Taught" Walpola Rahula "Bruce Tegner Series" Bruce Tegner "China's Imperial Past" Charles Hucker
  13. Gumbi, Reminds me of Eddie Murphy's skit on SNL. I like it. Why did you chose it?
  14. Knuckles-to strengthen wrist and condition the knuckles Finger tips-to strengthen the hand and condition the fingers Because flat palm way, is not hard enough Is it all in masculinity?
  15. Ok, Iron Arahat, That is one version of a Lohan that I have not heard/read. Out of curiousity, where did you get that reference from? I am sincerely curious to look it up and read on that further. Now that you have posted that, I will post what info I have. In accordance to Buddhism, which had many influences in China and the Chinese assigning their own interpretations: A Arahant (Pali version), sometimes spelled as Arihan, is a person who has liberated himself from all defilements and impurities such as desire, hatred, ill-will, ignorance, pride, conceit, etc. Sometimes he was referred to as a "subduer". That he had subdued many mankind sufferings. Thus the fourth or highest level to Nirvana A Arhat, (Sanskrit version) correct spelling if one was to reserach, is a perfected person, one who has gained insight into true nature and existence and has achieved Nirvana. In essence the same as Arahant. The Lohan, a Chinese version of Arhat, per the Yogacara School of Vasubandhu, reflected on the doctrine of 18 levels or moves called Shipalohanshou, (Sanskrit-Astadasararahantapani) Thus, both meaning the "18 Hand Moves of the Arahants". It is a Buddhist nata-short (pratima-long or hsing-all meaning form). Some scholars believe this is where the term kata was derived from. Now here is a kicker, some scholars believe there were only 16 Arahants and that 18 was some Chinese accounts that the number 18 had some cosmic principal. In the Theravada scriptures it is 18. And I can name each one. Such hand arrangements were also known as mudras. In other texts, particulary Ch'an Buddhist, Lohan meant "those who subdue or attain victory over opposition". Now both of these are on the Theravada Buddhist tradition. The Mahayana Buddhist criticize this and state that the Bodhisattva is on the hihest ground. Such the Boddhisattva vows to remain in a cycle of rebirth to help others attain enlightenment. A Boddhisattva, from many accounts, could be considered as a guardian deity. Now, here is the problem, to understand Buddhism, including the Ch'an study (Zen), one has to research many texts on it. Problem with those texts, there were many schools (doctrines of thoughts). One school, known as "pure land" has different perspectives as well. Fortunately, in college I had a professor that taught Eastern Religion, esp Buddhism. Much of these terms we speak has orgin in Sanskit or Pali. Including Chuan Fa, and etymology, which some will freak if I go into detail on that.
  16. OK, but luckily the other kid walked away. This means that the situation didnt go any further.
  17. I haven't heard of that one. Im going to look it up
  18. I see what you mean. I was keeping within the general confines
  19. So I guess what you are saying, as you rank higher you become more mature and responsible?
  20. Yes, I bet you feel like "Rocky".
  21. That is a good point. However, I have a friend whom has a McDojo, and he tolerates a lot of unruly students. Some of which whose parents have lots of $$$. Not to mention social status.
  22. Sure and it's also a personal choice. Personally I think that 100 push ups from the knees are just as good, if not much better as 25 full push ups. It's like sometimes I will do sit-ups and may decide to do 100, other times I will do full on stomach crunches and may decide to only do 50. Variation. The spice of life! Yes, I can see that to a degree. The difference is 100 from the knees, being a exercise of stamina. The other, the 25 regular, are developing strength. However, to strengthen the wrists and arms, the normal push up can be practiced as: Phase 1. Keeping the body up in start position only. Using a timer, try to beat each previous time. try for about 6-8 weeks. Phase 2. Hold the body and half up positon. Use the timer in the same fashion. Practice for the same amount of time. Phase 3. Repear phases 1 & 2, with feet elevated on chair. The key is to start of easy and beat each time. Personal choice-granted. But women can do regular pushups given determination, sweat, and practice. Then again, I know some guys that cannot even perform 5.
  23. Lord, although I do not personally know this person, please help this person, form my heart. Give him the strength and the courage to endure.
