when we look at the family of SanZhan/Sanjan/Sanchin we can see that Tensho is more inline with them(based on Ju) compare to Miyagi Sanchin which is totally different(based on go). Chinese crane systems: Tensho: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAjWJfeJ6rs okinawan Sanchin based on crane chinese boxing: Miyagi Sanchin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O1FGcwZV1s

Shotokan is a derivative of Okinawan Shuri-te which is a combative style, any changes in kata or steping for the purpose of conditioning makes it a sport oriented karate, as for sloppy kata, it goes back to performer, i can do a sloppy shotokan kata same as i can do a sloppy Sanchin.

you also gain more confidence when you get use to being hit, if you do some kind of full contact and get knocke down or knocked out ,it will help you greatly. -
What have you learned from your style(s)?
P.A.L replied to NightOwl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i didn't understand, i thought you like that style, what happened? -
i have the chance to practice Kendo, it's only one day a week for 2-3 hours, i am a lefty and don't know if it makes it harder to learn or not. the teacher is from Korea, and teaches Korean style of Kendo. i guess i need to buy some stuff but don't know the right terminalogy yet.

in the first match the level of two karate kata was almost huge, the young karateka from Egypt lost 4 point on takedowns easily, same thing happend in the second match but resulted in no points since the karateka from Iran knew exactly how to control the opponents hands and arms when he went down. in the first match the winner from Estonia was really good in using takdowns. the second match was closer, i posted it for very straight forward points, pushing down the opponent's front hand, moveing in off line and reverse punch resulted in 3 points,2 in attack and 1 in counter, also the low level reverse punch that he did twice on his knees resulted in 1 point.

Very good points , see these two final matches from last year world karate championships, +80kg Stonia VS Egypt -75kg Iran VS Spain there are great lessons in these two matches if you look closely.

I think this is what they believe in Okinawan Shuri-te, the lesser and greater versions, in shorin ryu we allways learn sho before dai version of the same kara. passai sho kusanku sho passai dai kusanku dai

sorry to hear that. use hot water in shower.

kick to the head 2 points(sometimes 3 point) punch 1 point, don't waste time by kicking body unless you can get a knock down.

this is Matsubayashi version which is a little bit different from Itosu no passai and Matsumura no Passai, it think they also call it Tomari no Passai I couldn't find our version of passai(Kobayashi/shorinkan) but i will post it on youtube later.

yes, 5 animals kong fu predate the style i tractice, okinawan crane goes back to Chinese crane styles. chinese styles show more internal aspects of MA compares to Okinawan karate.

but passai sho and Bassai sho are not the same, does it mean Itosu created 2 passai? we know Bassai dai is a Itosu kata for sure but i don't think any shorin ryu style practice anything close to Bassai sho which makes me think that is not a Itosu kata. Yes, they are. Bassai So is the Korean pronounciation of "Passai Sho." Now, maybe the Korean version has changed from teacher to teacher in Korea. But, this is originally the same form. Eizo Shimabukuro (Shorin-Ryu) in Ginoza Village, Okinawa teaches this form. R. McLain i guess you misunderstood, we are talking about Bassai sho in Shotokan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GQu9N0e8SQ is this what you call passai sho or Korean Bassai So? in shorin ryu (at least all 3 styles that i know, kobayashi, seito, matsubayashi) we don't have such a kata.

Sounds good. I may have to try that out. i think you should consider loseing some weight( 60 lbs may be? , I am 180 and been trying to lose 8lbs with no success in last 2 years ), in each kick or pivot you are putting a lots of extra pressure on your knees which can creates meniscus tears , you gotta take some MRI to make sure you Meniscus is ok,

Finding the time for MA practice

(65lbs compare to my usuall 50lbs).although i have not shot any arrows from summer i still have the pain and spasm.

don't worry about belts that's the last thing you should worry about, half grades are perfect for the kids since they get bored pretty quick, this way the instructor can test them like every 3 months instead of 6 months.

1- first thing is to learn how to align your hand so you wouldn't damage your wrist. ask your sensei and make sure you have the correct technique 2- later you will learn to stay loose and gain speed during the most part of the punching, tighten the muscles right befoe impact 3- don't be afraid, if your technique is correct ,punch hard and aim for 1"-2" behind the soft target but never punch something that can't yield, like a wall or a bad makiwara. you gotta forget the menality of being a petite female, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. you can be either side of this , it's all in your head. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm5pTLvvtvA

I wouldn't go with a sensei if he is only sympathetic. but i would go with a sensei if he is one a kind in his art even if i am not ceazy about his art. if i see Mario Higaonna teaches Goju ryu in a dojo close to me i would stop my shorin ryu for a while, since it's a only chance i can get kicked by somebody who was kicked by chojon Miyagi.
