  1. Okinawan karate divides in two major way shuri/(tomari) te and Naha te, everything in Shuri te is natural from steping to breathing so if you are gonna take shorin ryu then there is no dynamic tension involove. as for Naha te most of them more or less practice some katas with some level of dynamic tension, the most famous is Miyagi no sanchin from goju ryu school, Tensho kata also looks like Sanchin but it represents the "ju"(soft) in contray to sanchin which shows the "go"(hard). i have looked for medical papers that shows the negative effect of dynamic tension in karate on a scientific base but yet to find one, if you do a kata with dynamic tension just don't bring it up to a point that your muscles start to shake.
  2. my 2 cents; after these you can expect a failure or may need some adjustments. 40K Porsche 60K Ford 70K Hyundai 90K Mercedes 175K Toyota 250K Lexus
  3. I study mathematics when I am really bored, and i read "the Gadfly" when i am sad. I go to longbow tournament and I forget to take my bow I go to GRE engineering exam without a calculator
  4. I thought that both members there looked good. Which one are you? I am the one who started the kata alone then my sensei joined in, it was awkward since I wanted to put power into the kata and follow his count/timing as well, I should do it alone next time.
  5. this is the first time i see myself doing a kata, last week before going home we did these katas and one of our friends taped it. now i know how bad my karate is.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGGMQGvXY6A Gojushiho kata http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEkA4H5iRA4

  7. in 1986 i had a Z80-spectrum, 3Mhz and 48K ram,4bit cpu. it's funny when you compare it to a 64 bit cpu at 3.2GHz our kids play with.
  8. i checked the files, i scaned these files last year and i used a OCR program to read them, there are some mistakes in the text and i found a wrounf stance also, i 'll check and rewrite them tonight. I am gonna talk to my sensei and post the Yakusokus on the youtube.
  9. does written instruction work? or you need a video. i couldn't find a clip.
  10. As for pressing concept, in our dojo we look at it as ; pressing the space and pressing by technique. Jamming into a technique by moving forward is pressing the space, like jamming into a long rang mawashi geri or axe kick, or a haymaker. In short distance we apply pressing by adding a forward component to each defensive techniques. A common example, in passai kata(not including tomari version like Matsubayashi ryu) there are three shuto down blocks, so the punch comes we go over the punch and shuto block then we jam in and second shuto block … in the first move adding a forward component to the technique, we drive the shuto block into liver like a spear thrust, this is a press by technique. Against the idea of pressing we have the blending, which many martial artists use successfully against pressing strategy. Obviously there is no clear border in between, most of the styles use a mixture of both.
  11. i wouldn't go for any kata with a jump.
  12. Chotoku Kyan was considered a handicap yet by practice he became one of the most famous karate masters of all time. http://ejmas.com/jcs/jcsart_noble_0800.htm
  13. here is pressure point combo for you, use one knuckle punch and keep hitting the arm pit and blow to the rib next to the chest, after it makes the opponent concerne fake a punch and when he drop his elbow you do mawashi geri to the head. as a kyukoshin guy you need 3-4 pressure points, the solar plex punch while fist is 3/4 turned , one knuckle punch to arm pit, shin kick to the point around 5 inch above knee, Rib punch on the side of the chest.
  14. when i think about it ,I really don't have one, i only know counter attacks while pressing forward. every atempt for attack i make is actually a fake move.I wouldn't advertise or teach this kind of mentality though, it's for me.

    Cross training

try a pure grapling style like Judo or BJJ , other striking styles can't help you that much.
  17. many of the katas are transferable to shotokan, mostly shuri-te and tomari-te. some kata like Sanchin has no meaning if you bring the into shotokan, like majority of Naha-te kata or white crane. this is a example of a failed atempt to creat a crane kata by shotokan stylist. it's a mixture of some shuri-te techniques plus some randon moves of white crane and ends like a Goju ryu kata. here is a actual crane kata http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmASeBvCq5M so you need to understand the kata and it's history before translating it.
  18. To me there is no misperception, chosin Chibana has been recognized for his karate based on his results and influences enough. He was not the only warrior in Ryukyu, there were many of them and none of them received the proper recognition by the rest of MA community(mostly because they were Okinawan and not Japanese) . Sensei Mabuni learned and taught to the point that he is known to be the greatest karate teacher, sensei Funakushi was not the brightest student of itosu but he introduced the Okinwan Te to the mainland Japan. Miyagi created/organized one of the best styles of karate and one the most influential katas, Sanchin(Miyagi no Sanchin). Motobu beat the … out of a young boxer at his mid 50s and challenged Funakushi's way of doing karate all together. Sensei Oyama challenged the whole martial art community in Japan by his hard core fighting style. they all stamped their names in MA history by some extraordinary act. Chosin chibana decided to be humble and stayed in his dojo, Hohen Soken ran away to south America. That’s why they were not recognized by outside world to their best potential. I have not seen even one video clip of Chibana , I have archives of Okinawan masters and their pictures and I only have less than 10 pictures from sensei Chibana , and I gotta tell you most of them are in a sloppy, unbalance transitional stances which has no relation with the kind of karate he was teaching. You look at 10 pictures of Motobu sensei , immediately you can feel that he was a scary karate master. The idea of putting all you got in one punch or kick, to have the spirit of a warrior , to punch over and kick under the idea of pressing these are all great but Sensei chibana was not the first and only advocate. Nobody put his influence below Nakazato or Miyahara and nobody can put him over Itosu or Matsumora, he got his own place in MA history no more no less. Thanks for the side note , I prefer to call my style of karate shorin ryu and if somebody needs more details I refer to it as kobayashi ryu. I feel uncomfortable using the term “Kobayashi shorin ryu “ for the same reason. But I have to mention that all of my certificates are from Shorinkan.
  19. IMO, Sensei Oyama the founder of Kyokushin karate is a better example of this kind of karate compare to sensei chibana.
  20. i heard this from T. Sengoku Sensei (kodokan, IJF), it's all related to the way samurai sit down or stand up. you go down with left so in case you have to draw the katana it won't jam on your left. same when you standing up, right goes first so the sword can be drawn easily from left side. i have seen okinawan sometimes do the opposite way.

    Sanchin Kata

I hope you explain more about "the principle of non-rebound" which is new for me( when you get a chance). I look at the above katas from the roots in white crane system, in all these katas including Tensho the toughness of forearm and fingers comes from positioning of the hand which pulls the tendons, in Miyagi Sanchin the toughness comes from natural muscle contraction. white crane uses both the muscle contraction and tendon release to create power in pin point strikes. that's why we see all the strange hand positions in white crane katas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzVdNiZUxmc here is short article about tendon strength. http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/tendons.html
